No 9: #Bottoms

Lovely comedy about high school lesbians kicking ass.

And it has #AyoEdebiri ☘️

Really enjoyed it.

7/10

10) #TheOutfit

Mobster thriller/whodunnit set in 1950s Chicago.

The ending was good but the rest was a bit meh. Didn’t grab my attention as much as I was expecting.

Eleven: #10ThingsIHateAboutYou

God I love this film. I watch it about once a year. Still drool over Heath Ledger (what a loss, brilliant actor), still want Kat to be my best friend. She’s such an adorable character. I feel every moment of her poem.

It’s one of the better teenage rom coms of the 90s.

Give it a watch if you’ve never seen it. You might like it.

9/10

12: #PastLives #Movies #Film

It’s beautiful.

I sobbed.

8/10

Number 13: #AnatomyOfAFall #Movies #Film

Story of a wife being accused of murdering her husband.

Found this an emotional rollercoaster. It dissects the complexities of relationships, marriage and parenthood.

Excellent performances.

I was exhausted after watching it. It was really good but I really couldn’t watch it again.

8/10

14) #TheMarvels #Movies #Film

Meh.

I really need to stop watching Marvel movies. They’re getting so boring.

The best bit was the cats.

5/10

15 #TheHungerGamesTheBalladofSongbirds&Snakes

I didn’t know much about this before I watched it and haven’t read the book. I was expecting and hoping it was going to give us a history on the different districts and the conflict with the Capitol but instead it was more of a Snow origin story which just didn’t really grasp me.

It was ok but very forgettable.

5/10

16) #Spaceman with #AdamSandler

Hahahahahahahahahahaha

No, really, hahahahahahahaha..

It’s trying to be Interstellar, Gravity, Arrival, Contact with a bit of 2001 thrown in but it’s failing MISERABLY!

The points are for #MaxRichter’s gorgeous soundtrack and the #Nutella

4/10

Number 17

#Dune2

OMG, it’s AMAZING.

I was sceptical as to whether Timothée Chalamet would be strong enough to be a leader but I was wrong.

It’s epic 🙌

And now I want to ride a sandworm!

10/10

18) #CaptiveState on Netflix.

A Dystopian/Sci-Fi/Thriller starring John Goodman.

Earth is invaded by an alien species who start depleting the planet of natural resources so a group of Chicago humans decide to rebel.

Better than expected. Slow to begin but an exciting ending. Not bad.

6/10

#Movies #Film

19) #MonumentsMen

I’ve seen this before but forgot most of it.

Clooney is still so so frickin hot. It’s actually unsettling how hot & sexy he is, even with a dodgy moustache.

It’s a very twee movie even though it’s based on a true story.

If it wasn’t for Clooney I’d probably pass on it again.

5/10

Twenty: #Damsel on #Netflix

I do like a good fairytale gone dark type of movie and this absolutely fits into that genre.

Millie Bobby Brown is, as always, terribly dramatic, which can be off putting sometimes but in saying that it’s an ok action/fantasy.

Can’t stop thinking of #ThePrincessBride though with the appearance of Robin Wright. But that’s as far as similarities go.

It was grand.

6/10

21) #IrishWish ☘️

I just HAD to watch it. Yes, it’s v v v bad but it was enjoyable to spot all the places it was filmed in and around Bray, my hometown.

Powerscourt, Kilruddery and the Windgates side of Bray Head which apparently is right beside the Cliffs of Moher! Who knew!

It was awful.

3/10

22. #AllOfUsStrangers

V powerful.

Not to be watched if you’re in any sort of emotional turmoil. All the performances were excellent. It was slow in places but a beautiful story.

6/10

23 #FrancesHa

I’m so late to this but oh what a lovely joyful story about a beautiful woman.

I love the scene where she talks about lovers finding each other across a crowded room.

So wonderful. Love Greta.

7/10

24) #AmericanFiction

Satirical dark comedy about covert racism in the American literary and movie industry and society as a whole.

It’s v meta.

I really liked it.

7/10

25) #Shirley on #Netflix

The story of the first ever Black congresswoman Shirley Chisholm.

Excellent cast but there was something missing from this. It all seemed very diluted. I wanted an inspirational political biography but it failed in making me feel excited for her as a such a historic figure.

5/10

Number 26: The child forced me to go see #KungFuPanda 4.

It was exactly what you’d expect.

Child loved it.

I’ll watch practically anything with #JackBlack in it. I love him.

Grand for a bit of Easter hols fun.

6.5/10

27) #PoorThings

Beautifully shot, brilliant performances but it’s absolutely not a feminist film as some (male) critics have cited.

It’s absolutely filmed through the male gaze with the male idea of what sexual awakening in women looks like.

Emma Stone is fabulous but I’m disappointed her performances were often ruined by literal titillation.

Disappointing.

6/10 mostly for the performances, costumes, sets and cinematography.

28. #Belfast

I thought I’d hate it and it would be terrible and overly sensationalistic and too nostalgic but I was so wrong. A beautiful film that was so sensitive to the Troubles.

The young actor who played the part of Buddy was absolutely superb.

I loved it.

8/10

29) #101YearOldMan who skipped out on the bill and disappeared.

A great Swedish comedy sequel based on the book by Jonas Jonasson.

This is just lovely and smart and witty and heartfelt and a very pleasant watch.

7/10

30. #Scoop on Netflix.

True story about *THAT* Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew.

I’m not sure exactly what the purpose or intent of the film is.

If it was to turn the women producers of the interview into heroes it didn’t really work. And it didn’t go far enough to highlight exactly how deeply Prince Andrew was involved with Epstein and Maxwell.

It was meh.

5/10

32. #TheZoneOfInterest

Too often films about the Holocaust turn the Nazi characters into cartoon villains. They have a devil persona so you forget they were ordinary people like you & me.

The brilliance of this film is that the Nazis are humanised. We see them going about their normal day to day life, living alongside a concentration camp where thousands are being systematically murdered.

It shows them for what they really were. Not monsters, humans.

9/10

33) #JoyRide

Silly comedy about 4 friends going on a journey through their Asian heritage.

Loved all the characters. Loved the sexual innuendo and irreverence from a woman’s pov.

Just a fun film. Really enjoyed it.

6/10

34. #AnyoneButYou

Glen Powell is so so hot and I’m just about old enough to be his mother so that’s weird and that’s all I can really say on the matter!

8/10 High score being mostly for Glen Powell’s fit body.

35) #OneLife

The true story of Nicholas Winton, the British man who saved 669 Czech children from the Nazis.

An emotional and moving film starring Anthony Hopkins. I can’t help thinking about Palestinian children watching it.

6/10

37) #NextGoalWins

Ted Lasso type movie inspired by the real events of American Samoa national football team, directed by Taika Waititi.

Cheery feel good comedy. Lovely characters. The ending fell a bit flat but overall a lovely watch.

6.5/10

38. #MotherOfTheBride on Netflix.

In my defence, watched this on holidays when I was REALLY sick and could barely function.

It’s AWFUL.

2/10

39) #PlanetOfTheApes1968 original version.

I haven’t seen it in about 20 years so with the latest version just released I wanted to watch it again with a fresh eye.

Charlton Heston is so overly dramatic and can be a bit cringey at times but the special effects/make up and themes of the film have really held up well. I enjoyed it.

7.5/10

40. #BeneathThePlanetOfTheApes

This is the one that scared the shite out of me as a child in the 80s at the height of nuclear annihilation paranoia. The underground psychic beings also terrified me.

But watching it now I kept envisioning The Simpsons episode with the Planet of the Apes stage musical.

Brent is hotter than Taylor!

6/10

42) #ConquestOfThePlanetOfTheApes

The start of the ape revolution and the film looks at themes of civil unrest, inequalities, segregation, slavery and classism.

I think this movie sort of lost its way a bit and the quality of the costumes & make up seemed to be reducing.

I didn’t believe some characters were apes. They looked like men in ape suits iykwim.

The formula felt tired at this stage.

5/10

43) #BattleForThePlanetOfTheApes

I fell asleep watching it!

4/10

44) #PlanetOfTheApes2001 version with Mark Wahlberg.

I liked this when I saw it first but watching it again…..yikes!

I like most Tim Burton films but this is definitely NOT his best work.

The makeup was excellent though (done by legendary Rick Baker) and special effects are great but there’s lots of v cringey moments.

The relationship between Mark Wahlberg’s astronaut character and Helena Bonham Carter’s ape character is just…..weird and v creepy. 😬

5/10

45. #TheIdeaOfYou

Pleasant rom com with Anne Hathaway playing the role of a divorced 40 year old woman who falls for a 24 year old singer in a boy band.

Not as sensationalistic as I was expecting.

Harmless fun.

Anne Hathaway is STUNNING 😍

6/10

46. #WhereTheCrawdadsSing

This was a really popular book a few years ago and was all over the book clubs I’m in but I never got around to reading it.

It’s the story of a young woman who was abandoned and left to fend for herself in the marshes of North Carolina in the 1950s.

It reminded me a lot of Nell and To Kill a Mockingbird. It was ok. I was expecting more but I as I haven’t read the book I can’t compare the two.

I wasn’t blown away by it.

5/10

47) #WorldWarZ

I’ve seen this before. It’s one of the few zombie movies I’ll watch. I don’t like zombies. I normally don’t watch zombie movies. I have nightmares after watching zombie films because I have a fear of zombies.

I’m 51 yrs old and I’m fully convinced the world could end in a zombie apocalypse! I know, zombies aren’t real.

But look, Covid happened, so could a global pandemic of a virus that turns us into zombies!

Anyway, I like this film. It’s a good zombie movie.

7.5/10

48. #CivilWar by Alex Garland.

I’m a fan of dystopian movies and not really a fan of action/war movies but this had me gripped from the beginning.

I was expecting more back story to why there was a war and what each side represented but Garland deliberately made that ambiguous.
Not sure if that was to avoid conflict in the current US culture wars or if it was a creative decision to leave it subjective for the individual but it worked really well.

8/10

49) #GodzillaMinusOne

Really really good. Excellent special effects. V emotional performances. Watch it in Japanese with subtitles.

Looses points for only having two women characters who are very cliched.

7/10

50) #HitMan with Glen Powell.

Was expecting an action movie but it’s actually a nice & quirky romcom.

And it has Glen Powell being all hot & sexy, as Glen Powell tends to be. I liked it because, well, Glen Powell is in it.

Did I tell you it has Glen Powell? 👀

7/10 for Glen 🙌

51) #WickedLittleLetters

Absolutely adored this film. As usual, Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley are AMAZING. Lovely to hear Jessie using her Irish accent.

Brilliant cast. Brilliant acting from all.

Loved the themes of patriarchy, misogyny and sexism but done in a way that exposes its ridiculousness.

It sort of went under the radar a bit which is a shame as it’s a lovely heartwarming film.

8.5/10

52. #TheLostCity

Not really sure what prompted me to watch this really? It was meh!

Stupid and silly comedy action film based on the idea of a supervillain wanting to find long lost treasure.

Sandra Bullock is a superb comedy actor but this was beneath her tbh. She’s wasted in it.

I’d say American audiences loved it.

Grand to watch if you’re hungover.

5/10

53) #GhostbustersFrozenEmpire

What you’d expect. Not as scary as previous films in the franchise. The original is still the best.

5.5/10

54. #MrMalcolmsList

Yellow pack Bridgerton without the raunchy bits.

Grand if you want something light.

5/10

55) #DunePartTwo

Magnificent. Beautiful. Epic.

Second time watching it and loved it more.

Totally felt for Chani.

Can’t wait for the next one.

10/10

56. #AFamilyAffair

Age gap rom-com with Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron.

Couldn’t get passed the amount of plastic surgery the two lead characters have had.

And there was ZERO chemistry between them.

Not sure if that’s to do with the fact they’re unable to move their facial muscles due to so much Botox and fillers but honestly during the “sex scene” I just cringed 😬

4/10

57) #InsideOut2

Riley hits puberty!

Not as good as the original but still a fabulous way to introduce kids to emotions, feelings and the workings of their brain.

Excellent animation but lacked some of the humour and gut wrenching scenes needed to push it ahead of number 1.

Still a great watch.

8/10

58) #ChildrenOfMen

Dark and disturbing dystopian film based on the novel by PD James. Humanity is on the brink of collapse as women are no longer able to carry pregnancies full term due to global infertility.

Clive Owen is great in it but Michael Caine steals the show.

All I could think about while watching it was Palestinian women currently in a war zone in Gaza giving birth surrounded by death & chaos.

6.5/10

59. #TheEndWeStartFrom

Similar theme to Children of Men.

Dark dystopian future where London and parts of the UK are decimated due to climate change. We journey with a woman and her baby through the aftermath.

Jodie Comer was brilliant. But the whole thing was really really depressing. I mean, a lot of dystopian books/films ARE, but you need some light to balance it a bit.

5/10

60) #TheWeddingRinger

Silly bromance comedy about a desperate friendless groom who hires a best man for his wedding.

This is trying v hard and is not really funny. I think I sort of chuckled once.

V forgettable.

5/10

61) #KingdomOfThePlanetOfTheApes

Latest instalment from the Planet of the Apes franchise that sits somewhere in the middle of the other films. It’s both a sequel and a prequel. Set after the latest films but before the originals.

It’s surprisingly good. Much better than anticipated. Superb CGI. Lovely characters. Great cinematography. Script is a bit dodge in places but they’re apes who talk so I wasn’t expecting Shakespeare!

Overall quite enjoyable.

7.5/10

62) #Challengers

Thought this was going to be an exploitative/sensationalistic movie about threesomes but it’s actually an intelligent dissection of competitive sport (tennis) and the lengths some people will go to to succeed.

There were bare male bums and even some willies, which are so rare in movies, so I’m probably marking it higher than it deserves!

Better than expected.

7/10

@Anitambyrne I loved it! I watched it with my 11 year old son and 10 year old daughter and I think it will stay with them both for a while.
@Anitambyrne Almost choked on my tea reading this. 🤣Kidman’s face alterations appear more distracting in some roles rather than others. Going to have to check this out to see Zac’s amendments.
@Anitambyrne Twas kinda short, no? And predictable? Enjoyable but lacking. Fair dues to the young cast though.
@Anitambyrne scrolled through this thread today and watched this on the recommendation. Loved it! So clever.
