Looking forward to the day applications does similar checks to what websites do with adblockers .... "To use this application you must disable OS adblocking"
Do we dare come with a prediction how long it will take?
I can't believe it .
Meanwhile, when was the last time you saw an ad on Ubuntu machines?
Answer: when you installed Ubuntu. While you were waiting 20 minutes for #Ubuntu to install, the installer showed ads promoting ... Ubuntu.
#Microsoft, do you need donations? Shall we take up a collection so you can afford to develop a good OS?
Now today , every software got the "Internet Thinking", they don't necessary take money from the USER, they take adventages from the USER, like personal data.
I though even pay off is better than they steal your personal data.
free is not free, sometimes it mean more pay off.
@tennoseremel @nixCraft as much as ads in xiaomi apps suck, the apps themselves have featuresets that in my experience sometimes put samsung's stuff (which you'd expect to be top of the line since they're one of the big players as far as very high end phones go) to absolute shame
the best example I can come up with is the file explorer: xiaomi's doesn't just have an FTP client but ALSO an FTP server that's easy to set up and just works, all while having a good looking interface (surprisingly rare on android)
samsung's explorer only has the FTP client which is pretty much the minimum you'd expect, every file manager on android has one by now
@nixCraft
Chris Titus has some similar software & tutorials
the marketeers lost ground in any direction
it is only advertizing bullshit and UserControl
began with Edge - all request of the #SearchEngine go to ... #MS_shit
soon we can call them #MicroShit
#TheNextLevel of delusion, ...
#Enshittification
but annoyingly excel with macros is working still quite fine (unstable with big files,.. , but still stable enough)
are there ggod cases for macro-tools or other skripts (python) with #LibreOffice ?

@nixCraft Hey it’s me!
Just wanted to say, I can’t believe it either. I daily drive Arch and run Debian on all my servers and find the ads just as appalling as you. This tool came from the wish for people who are stuck with windows to have an easy (especially for non tech savvy people) way to make windows a bit less terrible!
@nixCraft What I can’t believe is that after all these decennia they still need a reboot for every f*cking change. (I.e. they still haven’t fixed their filing system.)
@nixCraft always been one of my top most hated aspects about Windows, and I know that the dynamic that is capitalism means that it’s coming to my beloved macOS, no matter how much the cost of entry, eventually. Ugh. When it does is when I will absorb all the other financial and stress related costs of switching to a truly free and open OS.
I can’t believe that MS don’t even offer a no-ads tier/option, not that that would make it any less contemptible but it shows that the real estate on hundreds of millions of desktops is worth more to them than just advertising dollars, which is a lot scary.
