I can't believe a paid OS needs a tool like this. Here's a GUI tool called OFGB (Oh Frick Go Back) to remove all the ads in Windows 11. It's understandable if a free OS or app needs ad support, but this is just crazy https://github.com/xM4ddy/OFGB

@nixCraft don't forget: it maybe breakes things in future, if you mess around with your OS like that

@tinfoil-hat @nixCraft

Looking forward to the day applications does similar checks to what websites do with adblockers .... "To use this application you must disable OS adblocking"

Do we dare come with a prediction how long it will take?

@tinfoil-hat @nixCraft so how is it different from any other windows utility?
@krolden @nixCraft mainly because it's messing with the system files
@tinfoil-hat @krolden @nixCraft it's just setting registry key values for settings that are otherwise scattered across the windows11 settings app
@tinfoil-hat @nixCraft Are you referring to the app or the OS with a UI that is now broken because it has ads shoved into it

@nixCraft

I can't believe it .

@longLiveCarryOn
@nixCraft

Meanwhile, when was the last time you saw an ad on Ubuntu machines?

Answer: when you installed Ubuntu. While you were waiting 20 minutes for #Ubuntu to install, the installer showed ads promoting ... Ubuntu.

#Microsoft, do you need donations? Shall we take up a collection so you can afford to develop a good OS?

#AdsOnWindows

@potungthul @nixCraft

Now today , every software got the "Internet Thinking", they don't necessary take money from the USER, they take adventages from the USER, like personal data.

I though even pay off is better than they steal your personal data.

free is not free, sometimes it mean more pay off.

@nixCraft Microsoft is becoming Xiaomi of desktops, huh? 🤔 Except in the later there are actually options in programs themselves to disabled that, AFAIR.
@tennoseremel What do you mean by "becoming"? All of this shit was in Windows 10 long ago, except maybe for file explorer ads. You could see ads even on desktop if the search bar was enabled.

@nixCraft

@ex Not really, I couldn’t as I use Linux exclusively 🤷

@nixCraft

@tennoseremel So now you know that was a really forward-thinking desicion.

@nixCraft

@tennoseremel @nixCraft as much as ads in xiaomi apps suck, the apps themselves have featuresets that in my experience sometimes put samsung's stuff (which you'd expect to be top of the line since they're one of the big players as far as very high end phones go) to absolute shame

the best example I can come up with is the file explorer: xiaomi's doesn't just have an FTP client but ALSO an FTP server that's easy to set up and just works, all while having a good looking interface (surprisingly rare on android)

samsung's explorer only has the FTP client which is pretty much the minimum you'd expect, every file manager on android has one by now

@nixCraft Well, they are an advertising company now, so I'm not really surprised.

@nixCraft sign of the times...
EaaS: enshittification as a service

@soviet @nixCraft

the marketeers lost ground in any direction

it is only advertizing bullshit and UserControl

began with Edge - all request of the #SearchEngine go to ... #MS_shit
soon we can call them #MicroShit

#EaaS

#TheNextLevel of delusion, ...
#Enshittification

but annoyingly excel with macros is working still quite fine (unstable with big files,.. , but still stable enough)
are there ggod cases for macro-tools or other skripts (python) with #LibreOffice ?

@nixCraft people are gonna take it, and keep buying it, and they're going to keep getting what they deserve.
@prettygood @nixCraft at least some laptops manufacturers don't ship with prebuilt OS like Windows by default now, which even saves some money because you don't need to include license fee in price. If you have no OS by default, this is the great time to install something that is not Windows.
@nixCraft thanks for letting me know my next build will be Linux 😁

Microsoft is the best marketing firm for making that switch
@nixCraft In addition to like and share, mastodon needs a big laugh button.
@nixCraft CAPITALISM!!!
@dgar @nixCraft What makes it even worse is you know they spent their time on that instead of fixing the endless zero days coming out of that cesspool 🤦
@nixCraft you can't understand the user experience, Microsoft knows what is good for users
@nixCraft Everyday I'm glad I completely removed Windows from my main PC
@nixCraft Now do one to take the AI-generated suggestions out of Google Search, please
@nixCraft and I thought the 'bug the user every so often to set up a Microsoft account' notification 'feature' in Win 10 was bad enough.

@nixCraft WHY THE FECK DO PEOPLE STILL USE #WINDOWS?

This is just an abusive relationshio none of the users will gain anything from...

Just bite the bullet and migrate to #Linux because even the worst Distro is better by a long shot!

@kkarhan @nixCraft There is one thing I actually do hope M$ will create in the next few months: universal printer drivers - Linux would definitely benefit!

Anything else... well. No. :)

@jesterchen @nixCraft there's like #CUPS and all good printers I know understand #PostScript or just #PDF files...
@nixCraft Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty much certain that paid Windows does not have ads. That's kind of the point
@saden @nixCraft apparently that's no longer the case
@saden @nixCraft You are wrong. It’s chock full of ads now.
@freeagent @nixCraft Weird that mine isn't, at all
@nixCraft
Microsoft has literal TRILLIONS of dollars. They do not NEED ad revenue.
@sb @nixCraft but the additional money can't hurt either. Right?
@nixCraft How ironic that when I followed the link to Github to check it out, the page I saw was Github wanting me to reconfirm my login means, and the only way to get it out of my face was to click a button marked Remind Me Later.
@nixCraft
Windows 20SE™
(SE = Shit Edition)
@nixCraft It should be literally illegal to put ads on something I paid for, which includes operating systems, software, apps, gas pumps, flights, taxis, etc etc etc. No double dipping!
@nixCraft That's why other OS like Linux, in 50 distros now or BSD is better than windoze.

@nixCraft Hey it’s me!

Just wanted to say, I can’t believe it either. I daily drive Arch and run Debian on all my servers and find the ads just as appalling as you. This tool came from the wish for people who are stuck with windows to have an easy (especially for non tech savvy people) way to make windows a bit less terrible!

@nixCraft honestly the thing you said is not understandable to me, if you cant make the thing without ads please just don’t fucking make it
oh dear oh dear oh dear
@nixCraft People still pay for Windows?
@nixCraft does it also get rid of the Windows Copilot AI shit
@nixCraft Thank you for sharing. I have already made these changes for myself in registry editor (and more) but it's useful for sharing.
@nixCraft you might be interested in privacy.sexy (yes that's a real site) that helps tone down some of the annoyances.
@nixCraft just hold on to Windows 10 and let's make coming Windows 12 rot in hell

@nixCraft What I can’t believe is that after all these decennia they still need a reboot for every f*cking change. (I.e. they still haven’t fixed their filing system.)

#notmyproblemthough #notusingthatificanavoidit

@nixCraft always been one of my top most hated aspects about Windows, and I know that the dynamic that is capitalism means that it’s coming to my beloved macOS, no matter how much the cost of entry, eventually. Ugh. When it does is when I will absorb all the other financial and stress related costs of switching to a truly free and open OS.

I can’t believe that MS don’t even offer a no-ads tier/option, not that that would make it any less contemptible but it shows that the real estate on hundreds of millions of desktops is worth more to them than just advertising dollars, which is a lot scary.

@nixCraft saya sebagai pengguna #Linux joget-joget membaca berita tentang iklan yang berada di Windows 11 ini🕺🏻
