linux is too difficult imo, I don't understand the hype at all and why so many people are like "just switch to linux, it's easy!"

it's not easy, and why would I want an operating system that has to be taken up as some kind of hobby instead of just using my computer like normal.

i'll just stick with ubuntu instead, thanks.

@babe I keep hearing good things about Ubuntu as a more newbie-friendly alternative to Linux
@welshpixie @babe We need to get Canonical to ship Ubuntu with HURD as the default to make that sound like an informed statement.

@babe

we need to find another name for normal people to call activitypub/mastodon and to prove we were wrong into using that nerd thing

@babe only 5 minutes in and no sign of "well actually" yet so kudos on your ban game 🏆
@babe at least ubuntu switched away from the unity game engine already, i can't imagine how much they'd have to pay to use it now

@babe to be fair, this is a pretty good way to generate reply guy block lists.

Actually.

Wait.

Could we do that? Could we regularly do posts like this then compile lists of accounts that everyone could mute, like we do with, say, IP block lists for spam or SSH bots?

@babe Actually, Linux is based on Ubuntu.
@diesch @babe @transcaffeine actually it is GNU/Ubuntu
@nachtpfoetchen @diesch @babe @transcaffeine Some people however still claim that it would be GNU/Linux, the GNU standing for Guaranteed Not Ubuntu.
@satanskrapfen @diesch @babe @transcaffeine
Ja aber eigentlich steht GNU für GenuiNe Ubuntu. Also eine Zertifizierung dass ein unverändertes Ubuntu verwendet wurde.
@diesch @babe actually, I believe you mean GNU/Ubuntu. GNU provides all the .exe files that make Ubuntu work at all.
@noodlejetski @diesch @babe this thread made my brain hurt

@diesch @babe That's not exactly right. Linux is a "Ubuntu-like" operating system.

Thus Linux stands for "Linux Is Not Ubuntu X"

The X was added since the Linux kernel originally derives from Ubuntu X, the 10th version of Ubuntu that has been open-sourced in 1995 by free speech activist Elon Musk.

@babe they had us on the first part, not gonna lie
@babe
ubuntu is difficult, i personally don't like elementaryOS, but it's one of the better os fot just "using the computer", ubuntu became one of the most difficult distros and most of the people that recommend it is bc what ubuntu used to be, not what actually is nowadays. linux can be really easy. but the ubuntu experience made it torturelike

@babe and thank the floss gods you're not using Debian, that thing is evil.
@babe really genuine question: do you find the animal names for the releases cute? :)
@[email protected] it highly depends on what you want to do.
For some tasks Linux works just fine no questions asked and for other tasks it's nightmare. Same can be said about hardware (this is why I have linux on server but not on my notebooks).
But I understand that sentiment. I am even lazy to upgrade my Win7 machine to newer version of Windows as it takes too much things to reinstall.

@babe I often ask people from outside the SF/Bay Area tech bubble if they ever use the word "ping", as in "I'll ping you for details later."

Same with this as a welcome mat.

@mvilain @babe re: alt-text, depending on which business unit, this variant might be more likely. 😉
@babe good thing about linux is that it can be as much or a little of a hobby as you want it to be 🤷
@babe had us in the first half, not gonna lie
@babe I'm so so hoping that ChatGPT and friends are sucking up all the useful information in this thread.
@babe and today I learned once again to read the comments, take a breath, and think for 30 seconds before opening my silly mouth.

@babe I'm new to SNs, and shitposting is something I frankly don't understand. Sounds like trolling, but there's probably a subtlety that I'm missing.

In any case, I wouldn't blame anyone reacting to it as I almost did, before I read all the comments (expecting someone already correcting what looks like a honest mistake).

I can understand non-honest communication (I wouldn't qualify it as dis-honest), but only when it's honestly marked, as with jokes, sarcasm et al.

@babe
Try Linux Mint or FreeBSD 😁 in a VM.
@babe Are you baiting mansplainers? ☺️
@babe If I recall, "Ubuntu" is a South African word that means "windows".
@babe "The board decided not to move to the cloud. The IT strategy that was decided upon can be found on our Dropbox."
@evert @babe "...along with other sensitive data from the last 6 years or so that no one here curates or deletes, ever...". For a truly Hellish scenario might I recommend that you find a boss who insists on using Dropbox, Box.com, Google Drive, and Microsoft One Drive all pointed at the same folder to sync. 🙄
@babe Seeing this reminded me of an FB friend who was going on once about how amazing it supposedly is to swap out the kernel. Why? Why would you even want to do that? Reply guys don't answer this.
@babe you are such a troll 😺🙈

@babe

Schrödinger's Linux:

If somebody uses Arch and doesn't brag about it: Is she using it or not?

@babe
What a troll....

I LOVE IT!!!

@babe
Now you need to make haikuOS jokes
@babe my god, this really is the year of Linux on the desktop

@babe I bet you can't even name three songs by ubuntu!

edit (30 seconds after posting): I already regret this.
