How many CPU cores (including threads ) and RAM are in your PERSONAL system? Are you happy with that? #linux #unix #desktop
@nixCraft 24 cores, 32 GB ram. Works fine for me.
@bagder nice. is same machine used to build and run curl ?
@nixCraft yes.but curl is a small project and it builds quickly relative to a lot of other things. Especially on this machine...
@nixCraft 16 threads and 32GB of RAM. Sometimes could use more cores for #BOINC computations.
@nixCraft 4 cores and 12 GiB in my notebook. 6 cores, 16 GiB in my desktop.
12 GiB is too little for a lot of stuff I do. 16 GiB is fine-ish now, but it's starting to be too little as well. CPU is fine.

@sigmasternchen I thought 16GB would be just fine for me as well, but because of the question above, I checked out the output of `free` and I notice it has a swap of 12GB so I should probably upgrade. 😁

@nixCraft

@hvangalen @nixCraft Yeah. In my case when I run two JetBrain IDEs in parallel on my laptop, the RAM is already at it's limit. And that's on Linux. On MacOS or Windows it would be even worse, because Docker needs its own dedicated memory.

@nixCraft Desktop: 24/64GB
Laptop: 16/32GB

At least my personal computer are more powerfull than professional one

@nixCraft 8 cores, 16 threads, 32 GB RAM in my personal desktop. Great performance (3rd gen Ryzen), I am very happy with the system.
@wurzelmann nice. What kind of GPU? Do you game, bro?
@nixCraft Sapphire RX 590, love the GPU, it's the blue special edition and is able to perform well even with titles like Cyberpunk 2077 on 1080p. 💪 Yes, I game!
@nixCraft 12C/24T & 32GB, I’d go for 48Gb of RAM for the next upgrade, thread count is perfect.
@nixCraft 64 Cores 128GB RAM works pretty good.

@nixCraft 6 cores (Ryzen 5600X), 16 GB memory.

It was fine until recently when ran out of memory while when I tried running one of the larger LLMs on my machine. Might get another 16 GB stick for a total of 32 GB.

@samebchase @nixCraft be sure to run dual channel memeoy. Also important for performances especially with ryzen
@nixCraft 8 cores / 16 threads - 32GB RAM. Starting to struggle with only 32GB of RAM but still running DDR4, so don't want to bump it up until I invest in DDR5.

@nixCraft Desktop: 8(no ht)/64
Laptop: 16/32

Even though desktop is much older, bonus RAM comes in handy sometimes and the cooling is much better so it feels much faster than the laptop which gets throttled easily.

@nixCraft 16 Cores, 64GB RAM. Very happy with that. Compiles wine in under 5 minutes and the Linux kernel in under 3. Maybe I’ll give gentoo a chance at the end of the year.

(But it was so incredibly expensive, this computer needs to live for a long, long time.)

@nixCraft you know what, after going quad-core I stopped counting, the difference in day to day performance is negligible.
@nixCraft 2C4T and 4GB of RAM for school. Runs surprisingly well.

@nixCraft Old dev system: dual 12c/24T xeon so totalling 48 threads.

Replacing it with some Ryzen7 microPC's which are 16 thread 32G ram - mainly as they max out at 20W each, so cheaper to run than the old xeon system.

@nixCraft 24/64. Could use a bit more RAM, tbh.
@nixCraft If you can't install GNU/Linux on your personal system, does it really matter how many cores and how much ram it has???
@nixCraft my main machine has a 16 threads, 16GB RAM but it's a laptop, but it still works wonderfully for my dev work.
@nixCraft the computer for my dayjob has 6c/12t 16G RAM though.. and because it's using the integrated GPU it stutters soooo much. Need to upgrade the RAM and get a small GPU in it.

@nixCraft 16 cores and a mere 16GB of RAM

It works great, most of the time, though sometimes it still gets sluggish while I'm compiling and building software I am working on, I guess it's using the swapfile, and I should actually put about 32GB in it /at least/.

But for the majority of the time I am quite happy.

@nixCraft 8/8 8/32 4/16 4/4 4/16. Yes.

@nixCraft

> How many CPU cores (including threads ) and RAM are in your PERSONAL system?

Not enough.

> Are you happy with that?

Never will be. Using Gentoo ;-;

8/16 - who need's more?

Just don't use software which burns CPU and RAM for senseless things...

@nixCraft

@nixCraft 2 cores, 4 threads, 16GB RAM. Watching youtube felt like someone was mining crypto on my machine. After migrating to GNU applications everything is excelent.
@nixCraft 10/32... don't need all the cores and rarely need 32... I do however need much FASTER memory, 4133-15s is nice and all, but 7600-34 sounds much much nicer.
@nixCraft 36 threads and 64GiB. Single core performance is a bit lacking, since it's an older xeon, but kernel defconfig compiles in ~2mins so no real complaints

@nixCraft 6 cores, 12 threads, 32 Gigs of RAM. At least my desktop.

My laptop is a 4 core, 8 threads machine. Capable enough for on the road things right now.

@nixCraft got 6 cores with 6 threads, 16gb of (DDR3 😭) RAM, works perfectly fine for my usecase 🤷
@nixCraft 12/24, very happy with it. But 128 GB RAM, also a reason for joy.
@nixCraft 4 threads 8G RAM makes me pretty happy
@nixCraft mine is 15 yo. At this point, it doesn't matter what's inside :))
@nixCraft 48 cores, 128 gigs of ram in my bedside workstation. Makes many of the tasks I do very quick and easy!
@nixCraft six cores, twelve threads, 32GB RAM... works, but upgrade is desperately needed
@nixCraft 24 cores, 64GB. Works fro me.
@nixCraft
4 cores, 16 GB. It's fine. I mostly use it for gaming.
@nixCraft 16c/32t & 96gb, very happy
@nixCraft 24C/48T TR 7960X with 128GiB RAM (currently). I am happy with it though it will be used as server soon.
CPU: 12th Gen Intel i7-12700H (20) @ 4.600GHz
can't paste the full neofetch

@nixCraft 4c/8t and 16GB (Minisforum UM350). It's my browsing/email/video playing machine.

If I want more cores/memory I use my proxmox box.

@nixCraft 16 cores, 32 threads, 64 gigs of ram. It's kinda overkill for my use case
@nixCraft 8 cores / 16 threads, 32GB
The cpu upgrade was very optional, my old 4960X was enough, except the high power usage and heat production.
32 GB is enough for most usages, but not for heavy usage/multitasking.
With actual unoptimisations like electron apps, virtual machines, and… well I may ask a bit too much to firefox that regularly use more than 20GB of ram, I often get >95% ram usage, so next upgrade is getting some more ram !
@nixCraft 4 and 8 cores 16GB RAM on the two main ones. I use barrier/synergy for keyboard and mouse sharing and syncthing/unison to keep ongoing work files in sync, so they generally work as one. I'm happy with it but I wouldn't mind a single powerful machine with lots of external screens.

@nixCraft 8-core Ryzen 3700X -> 16 threads. 32GB. Radeon RX 6750 XT.

Everything I throw at it runs smoothly in 1080p and compilation of anything doesn't take ages.

Happy.

@nixCraft
16 threads, 32gb of memory. I suppose I'm happy with it. It runs a little warm under pressure and I still need to stress it out with building the kernel or chromium.
