We got an email from the Serbian Registry of Internet Domain Names (RNIDS), the organisation that is responsible for the `.rs` top-level domain.

Looks like they are a big fan of Rust. 😊

@rust I plan to start prepending "Being fully aware that we have no control over how the Universe works or what the future holds," to all my emails.
@lindsey @rust I came here to make exactly this joke. thank you for saving me the typing!
@lindsey i love that part of the message too :D
@lindsey @rust I would trust people more if they freely admitted that instead of trying to claim that everything is fine all the time 🥳
@lindsey @rust That letter also reads between the lines as "Are you aware how shitty our government is and shouldn't you reconsider using our TLD?"
@lindsey @rust "I hope this email finds you in at least some control over how the Universe works or what the future holds"
@rust In this case it seems to work out alright, but in general one must be careful with country TLDs and their registrars, witness what happened to queer.af. https://www.theverge.com/2024/2/12/24071036/queer-af-mastodon-taliban-shut-down-afghanistan
The ‘queer.af’ Mastodon instance disappeared because of the Taliban

The administrator of the “queer.af” Mastodon instance was surprised to find the Afghanistan Taliban government had disabled its domain two months before its renewal date.

@Bahco @rust it's a nitpick but *geographical* TLDs.

.eu has its own set of problems.

TL;DR summary: be very careful if you use a .eu domain as your point of contact for anything.…

@rust Well that's awfully charming of them.
@rust That's nice AF. Not nice .af, of course....
@rust oh that's just cute.
@rust @torgo
That's such a lovely and eloquent email!
@rust giving countries ownership of TLDs seems like a dumb idea. I guess it's nice that the current government of Serbia supports you using .rs. Hopefully they stay in power, for your benefit.
@craftyguy yeah because random for-profit companies in random countries are generally much better at serving the public interest than publicly owned infrastructure with democratic oversight.

@guenther who says the governments controlling TLDs are democratic? And even if they are today, they might not be tomorrow. .af, anyone?

Also, no where did I call for for-profit companies to manage TLDs, so I'm not sure where you got that from 🙃

@craftyguy @rust As the alternative would be to give either the US government, or whoever can pay the most money, or whoever is chosen by people originally set up by the US DoD and then spun off, control of top level domains, it doesn't seem so bad to me.
@craftyguy @rust You don't know nothing about who's in power in Serbia at the moment, do you?
@nyca @craftyguy @rust i don't believe it's widely known that the government of serbia is quite literally fascist and bent on territorial expansion, for example, and often allies with russia https://circumstances.run/@hipsterelectron/112145756723113036

we do realize the government of serbia is super fascist right? everyone is aware of this? are we ok making this political alliance? https://social.rust-lang.org/@rust/112140223447505474

@nyca @craftyguy @rust or at least as a US citizen i wasn't aware of that until i started following a montenegrin activist
@craftyguy @rust I think it's a perfectly reasonable choice that TLDs that are literally the ISO country code of a country should be controlled (directly or otherwise) by that country's government. If you don't like it, there are many non-country TLDs to choose from.
@craftyguy You erroneously assume that RNIDS is a governmental entity. It is not. https://www.rnids.rs/en/conference-co-founders/co-founders-and-authorised-representatives

@kjetiljd Agitprop listed as one of 132 co-founders, how adorable.
@rust This makes me happy 🥰
@rust It's RS for it's the Republic of Serbia, or Republika Srbija.
@rust Wow, that's genuinely awesome. Greetings from Serbia. Makes me happy to read that they were so welcoming.
@rust that... is an amazing positive email. Congratulations in finding unexpected friends around, I guess
@rust I kept waiting for it to get mean and it never did.
@rust ccTLDs that are also programming langugage file extensions
.am Armenia, Automake
.as American Samoa, ActionScript
.cc Cocos (Keeling) Islands, C++
.gs South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Google App Script
.ml Mali, ML
.mm Myanmar, Objective-C++
.pl Poland, Perl
.pm Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Perl module
.py Paraguay, Python
.rs Rust, Serbia
.sh Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, Shell
plus many I've no doubt missed
@alex @rust As far as I can remember, paraguay makes it quite complicated to have a .py. First there has to be a second level like .com.py, and then I think you need to have a representant in paraguay. Also it’s about 250€/y.
So, not a lot of cool python projects in this space
@rust Serbian RNIDS is (so far) one of those rare truly great things here in Serbia.
@rust Aww that's lovely, I remember when more TLDs had a human touch to them.
@rust as a part of this *problem", I love that a single .rs domain can express both my nationality and the country I come from!
@rust Whaaaat! This is so nice! Thank you, Serbia!
@rust I’m jealous and sad that the Paraguayan government does not feel the same way about Python. 😂
@rust damn never seen a registry be that nice!
@rust I hope that there is enough love left for link aggregation websites written in Ruby? :D @pushcx
@rust ... or could it be that they know exactly how the universe works. And that they realize that they make a fortune selling all the .rs domains. A fortune they cannot make by selling domains to their population of about 7mio people. 😉
Whatever it is... the letter is very lovely 😊
@rust somehow that email has restored a little bit my faith in the humanity
@rust I still don't want to trust a .rs domain overly much, but... that *is* a lovely letter, and it's delightful that they sent it!
@rust
Such a beautiful letter.
@rust nobody else appears to be saying this but the current serbian government is literally fascist, allies with russia, and hates queer people https://circumstances.run/@hipsterelectron/112145756723113036

@jnfrd @rust i was also going to say я люблю русских людей, но не правительство
@rust Great! So when are yall going to move everything from io. over to rs.?
@rust @aral there are good people in #Serbia too 🫶🏼 🙌🏼
@rust @tito That is absolutely precious in the most genuine way!
