🧵 I've been browsing old #Hollywood movie magazines from the teens & 1920s. Some of the classified ads are great, so I thought I'd share a few with you...
'I don't care who you are' makes me laugh
Bowlegged men and unsightly knock-knees
This contraption does not look like an 'easy way to shape your nose'
'You can improve your face'
This Natural Body Brace doesn't look very natural or comfortable
'Reduce your flesh' is a great horror title
More facial scaffolding, which probably doesn't work and looks ridiculous
'Stuff Beautiful Birds'.
Cue Sid James laugh.
Similarly...
The Star Electric Massage Vibrator 'for use in your own home' (as opposed to your local church or library)
'Be a man!" Lots of ads for proper alpha meatheads. I love the absolute unit in the Road to Strength ad. Like a Terry Gilliam cartoon. And I'm pretty sure the name Lionel Strongfort is made up.
Here's another. The 'Man You Would Like To Be' is just about the campest thing I have ever seen.
Last one for now.
'I teach piano a funny way'. Such an odd slogan for a serious piano teacher.
@Richard_Littler The forerunner to the ‘one weird trick’ ads maybe?

@Richard_Littler I just saw this person in a video
Playing the piano in the most incorrect manner

[vid description: person playing a piano by plucking the strings, using a bass drum pedal to drum the piano cabinet, etc]

@Richard_Littler “All the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order”
@Richard_Littler The tiger stripe really just pushes it over the top. But he is pretty hot
@Richard_Littler "That's what you'd say, but that wouldn't wash with Geoff. No, he'd like a bit of pleading. Add spice to it. In fact, he'd probably tell you what he was going to do before he did it. "I'm going to pull your head off." "Oh no, please, don't pull my head off." "I'm going to pull your head off, because I don't like your head.""
@Richard_Littler
"You too can learn to stand in awkward poses that you'll never use in any situation ever"
@Richard_Littler Just remember that “alpha male” was as far I know, a wrong understanding of wolves social relationships. What is called alpha male by some animal societies bad articles, is just the father on a family. Wolves live not in a clan, but by family, until children are able to hunt/live alone, and then live. That’s why for other wolves (children) don’t mate with female in the clan (their mother or their sisters). Alpha male is then just a non-sens propaganda ^^.
@Richard_Littler pretty sure Lionel Strongfort is one of the MST3K Space Mutiny names.

@Richard_Littler

Interesting fact, "doctors" would perform digital manipulations in their clinics to help keep a woman from having hysteria. The first mechanical massagers were created to prevent the clinicians from getting hand cramps while performing their duties.

So yes, being able to do it yourself at home was a big boon.

@Richard_Littler
Sir. As opposed to in your *doctor's office.*
@Richard_Littler "Chin Muscles" eh. Sure, it's my gulletus maximus that's sagging, not the skin or anything...
@Richard_Littler only if it’s so tight it stops you eating
@Richard_Littler these are all the snake oil I need
@Richard_Littler Cover the whole body in rubber? Goodness.
@Richard_Littler
Oxidizing your flesh isn't much better
@Richard_Littler *puts them on head to toe to avoid being perceived*
@Richard_Littler @stina_marie @ElizabethLeeCo new way to politely ask someone to leave just dropped
@crowbriarhexe @Richard_Littler @ElizabethLeeCo Definitely adding this to my repertoire of everyday vocabulary.
@Richard_Littler "Cover the entire body." Someone had a fetish.
@Richard_Littler lol🤔🤔☹️😶🤣🤣🤣🤣A simple, 'lose weight' would be ok for me, 😮😮😮😶scary 😂😂😂😁
@Richard_Littler Pretty sure this has come around again in the form of TikTok trends.
@Richard_Littler (shudders) what was this an improvement on
@Richard_Littler are you sure this isn’t that Monty Python book from the 70s?
@Richard_Littler His utter lack of concern for me or my fate intrigues me

All are from the First World War era, but this one's the oldest in the list (and says it's the Third Edition, no less!)
