FYI for anyone who uses Dropbox, this perhaps has appeared in your settings and defaulted to "on". You'll probably want to turn it off.

This has circulated farther than I thought it would, so belated notes:

1) From what people have said, it seems like this doesn't show up for free accounts. If you're on a paid plan and it still doesn't, congratulations but I don't know what to tell you.

2) afaik, if you don't see it, you're safe - only paid users have access to the, ah, "privilege" of running their documents through sam altman's plagiarism factory (which definitely won't use your stuff to train their models, they _promised_)

@jrallsn I'm glad you clarified it; I can't see the far-right 'AI' option and yeah, mine's just a freebie account. Sad, and worse, fuckery. Defensible and normalized.

This is why we as users network, I think, and how important it is. Thank you for spreading the good word, ami.

@jrallsn Even Google Drive will have AI eventually, but also including Gmail, Calendar, Sheets, Docs.
@Alkaris @jrallsn
Does your gmail not offer to finish your sentences for you? Does Google Sheets not offer to autofill Maruary as the third month?

@Alkaris @jrallsn

Almost certainly it already is; they're just not telling you about it yet.

@jrallsn β€œWork faster in Dropbox using AI”… Riiiiggggghht.
@jrallsn Interesting. It isn't in my settings so far - I wonder if it's a non-EU thing.
@jrallsn
You can not opt out of first party AI, though. Same bullshit as with DeviantArt.
@jrallsn DropBox is hardly the only game in town. If you're not a fan of dealing with Google or Microsoft, you still have options. I've been using SugarSync for a decade now, and I've been super happy with them. I'm able to effortlessly sync files between my desktop, laptop, phone, and server. 250GB is $100 per year. Here's a referral link if anyone's interested. https://www.sugarsync.com/referral?rf=b3z8mt7zk5woo&utm_source=website&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=referral&shareEvent=7935207
File Sync and Online Backup - Access and File Sharing from Any Device | SugarSync

SugarSync is a cloud file sharing, file sync and online backup service that is simple, powerful and easy to use. Get a 30 day free trial!

@jrallsn Interestingly, that option doesn't appear in a free-tier account that I have. Perhaps everyone in the free tier is already "opted in" ... with no UI way to opt out?
@tychotithonus @jrallsn I was kind of hoping we in the free tier were unimportant enough to not even warrant this intrusion.
@tychotithonus @jrallsn the only thing I use Dropbox for is my 1Password 6 sync 🫠
@jrallsn doesn't even appear in my personal account.. which is just a free single user thingy.
@jrallsn Can't see it here. We're in Europe, so maybe that makes a difference? Or maybe they're still rolling it out?

@jrallsn thanks for sharing!

update: not yet visible in my account!

@jrallsn I don’t use Dropbox, but if I did, unless β€œAI” improves the speed at which I (a) put files into the sync folder, (b) yoink files out of the sync folder, or (c) select various menu options and things like that, I don’t see how it could possibly allow me to work faster in Dropbox.
@jrallsn I'm not getting it yet. Any idea who got fast tracked or why?
@jrallsn @chirpbirb mine does not look like that
@jrallsn β€žis deleted from third-party servers within 30 days.β€œ
wait, what?!
@jrallsn omg, another one! Thank you for sharing!
@jrallsn hasn't appeared in mine, maybe region specific?
@jrallsn hmm, is this behind an A/B test, I wonder. I don’t have that option – I’m under GDPR but I see US users in your replies also don’t see it.
@jrallsn Hmm... Just checked and not there for me (US).

@jrallsn

Thanks for the heads up.

Outside the US may not be visible yet, and may not be turned on.

If using non-Pro package the AI 'features' are not active either.

@jrallsn - and if it hasn't turned up yet there may be two reasons:

1. they didn't get to you yet

2. you have the "Early Access" feature switched off (this is a guess)

@jwcph @jrallsn I have Early Access turned off and don't have this tab.

@jrallsn

Anyone know how to access these settings through the app? Or do you get here on the website only?
I could Google but I’m about to hop on a call okay thanks bye for now

#alt4you @jrallsn

@jrallsn no, personal accounts don't have any AI features unless you opt in to "early access". Only then does consent to third party AI become an option.

@jrallsn they are phasing it in it seems. I don't have that option yet.
@jrallsn I went one step further and deleted #dropbox
@GalacticHero @jrallsn Sometimes regulating AI makes sense.
@jrallsn How does it make you work faster?
@jrallsn what I find strangest about this is that nowhere does it even attempt to tell you what this AI does or is for in anything but the vaguest terms imaginable, just like, hey, you want AI, cause we got AI
@andrewt @jrallsn yeah, what is the AI even for!?!
@jrallsn i love how vague and handwavey that is
@jrallsn I opted to turn Dropbox off instead.
@jrallsn checked, i am in germany and this setting is not there (yet). Where are you from? I bet it's because of GDPR that this hasn't spawned yet.
@jrallsn I guess I'm not in the right a-b group for this one.
@jrallsn there's no such setting for me yet, here in Brazil
@jrallsn do you know if "Slack AI" trains off all slack messages?
@jrallsn defaulting stuff like this to on should be a crime, imho.
@jrallsn REGULATION MATTERS... "on by default" everywhere there's not substantial AI regulation
@susankayequinn @jrallsn Because let's just be dicks to people everywhere that's legally allowed, right?
