Meanwhile #Israel's defence minister, Yoav Gallant, has said Israel will sever all ties with the #Gaza Strip once its war with #Hamas is over -- it would, as he put it, end its "responsibility" for life there.

The #Hamas authorities say #Israeli attacks have now killed more than 4100 people.

Over 1400 Israelis were killed in Hamas' unprecedented extremist attacks within Israel earlier this month

UN Sec Gen has visited #Egypt's #Rafah border crossing into #Gaza with a plea for aid trucks to be allowed in asap. Antonio Guterres said the lorries represented a lifeline for Gaza's suffering civilians. Mr Guterres said negotiations were continuing with Israel about the conditions for their entry. Egypt said it had opened its side of the border and wasn't preventing anything going through.
The #Israeli military says it believes most of the 200 people held #hostage in #Gaza are still alive. It’s thought the bodies of several other Israelis were taken into the enclave after the killings. The army said more than 20 of the hostages were children, while up to twenty are aged over 60. All were kidnapped in southern Israel after Palestinian militants killed more than fourteen-hundred people – most of them civilians – on 7th Oct. The attack was the worst in Israel’s 75 history.
#Hamas now says its military wing has released two of the hostages it took to #Gaza after its unprecendented attacks in #Israel. its Telegram channel said a mother and a daughter were American citizens and had been freed for humanitarian reasons -- and with the involvement of #Qatar. Some #Israeli media say that Israeli govt officials have confirmed the release, they'd probably be transferred to the care of the Red Cross who would bring them to Egypt and then Israel.

They were in Israel to celebrate the 85th birthday of Judith's mother, Tamar Raanan, and Natalie’s graduation from high school. They were taken from Kibbutz Nahal Oz on 7 Oct.

Another 8 family members are missing from Kibbutz Be'eri, and three were killed, incl a carer.

Blinken says US officials will meet with the released #hostages as soon as possible.

Blinken also says there's still 10 additional Americans who remain unaccounted for.

"No family anywhere should have to experience this torture," he says

"I want to thank the government of Qatar for their very important assistance," he says, but also states that he "can't speak publicly" about the details.

The #Palestinian Red Crescent says that #Israeli forces have issued an evacuation order to Al-Quds hospital in #Gaza.

The hospital is currently home to over 400 patients and 12,000 displaced civilians, according to the Red Crescent.

BREAKING NEWS
The #Rafah crossing has opened, with live footage showing trucks entering the border crossing from #Egypt into #Gaza.

It's unclear how long the crossing will remain open for. #Israel has so far agreed to allow 20 trucks into Gaza - carrying food, water and medicine - but no fuel - into Gaza through the southern crossing from Egypt.

#Egypt is holding a peace summit today to discuss the deepening conflict between Israel and the Hamas group in Gaza.

The list of attendees compiled by Reuters include #Egyptian Pres al-Sisi, #Palestinian Pres Abbas, UK Foreign Sec Cleverly, UN sec gen Guterres, and several heads of state in the Arab region, among others.

Notably, there are no #Israeli, #Hamas, US and #Iranian representatives on the list.
The Egyptian organisers say the main goal is a ceasefire.

New AP analysis of last month's deadly Gaza hospital explosion rules out widely cited video

The Associated Press is publishing an updated visual analysis of the deadly Oct. 17 explosion at Gaza’s Al-Ahli Hospital. The AP initially assessed that the explosion was likely caused by a rocket launched from within Gaza that misfired, and that assessment has not changed. However, new images that emerged after AP’s story was published show that a key video used in the initial analysis is no longer tied to the hospital explosion. Still, three other videos show Palestinian militants launching rockets from inside Gaza on a trajectory that would have taken them in the direction of the hospital seconds before the explosion.

It quotes a stmt from Israel's national security council, which says it "raises its travel warnings for Egypt (including Sinai) and Jordan to level 4 (high threat): recommendation not to travel to these countries and for those staying there to leave... as soon as possible".

Earlier this week, the warning level was similarly raised for #Turkey and Israeli citizens there were instructed to leave.

@fulelo Netanyahu needs to be ousted from government he already brought Israel to the brink of civil war even before this conflict. He was trying to strip judges of their power because they kept blocking his authoritarian shit
@fulelo Let's see, Bibi is going against his own army and intelligence as well as a big chunk of the population who blame him for this debacle. He's toast.
@fulelo this is why I say we shouldn’t jump the gun and why it’s dangerous that news is more about getting the story out first rather than getting it right. Because now we have an issue where people are going to use whatever to play into their bias, and how much you want to bet people will start calling the AP biased as the facts get revealed over this incident.
No one will win but everyone will lose in this conflict
@chiefgyk3d agree. The pressure to get it out there for media orgs is substantial... badly phrased headlines play into it too etc.
@fulelo
Israeli politics have obviously world wide impact on Jews.
Therefore the Israeli politics are irresponsible even to the own citizens and religious community.
@fulelo It is more like a retaliation of a Hezbollah attack killing 3 IDF soldiers yesterday. I am not sure whether the Israeli government has admitted this yet.

@fulelo

Serious question: What's the legal basis for Israel giving an /order/ for something in the /Gaza strip/? Thanks

@proscience @fulelo The answer depends on whether today's a day we're pretending Israel doesn't have territorial control of Gaza.
@proscience @fulelo What gives the Israelis the right to dictate policy in Gaza? The Israelis have the same right that the Germans had when they surrounded Warsaw in 1939 or they terror bombed Amsterdam in 1940. Might makes right. (practically, but not morally) The solution here is not a military one, but the fact that Israel must share with the Palestinians. The Israeli and Palestinian people form a symbiotic relationship. #Israel #Palestine #gaza #westbank

@rwether2023 @fulelo

That's pretty much the essence of my question.

Israel has no territorial rights re: the Gaza strip. Therefore, they cannot /order/ anything for Palestinians in Gaza.

They can issue legal orders only for territory that is 🇮🇱 according to international law.

@fulelo

@kirt @kirt @kirt

@fulelo surely issuing demands to evacuate a hospital with the threat that you are going to target the hospital is against all reasonable rules of war? The hospital is treating both sick people as well as those who’ve been injured by the conflict.
@fulelo Hamas & co will drag out negotiations, trickling out foreign citizens, young, old & wounded as a way of delaying the invasion of Gaza. Foreign countries will help Hamas delay the invasion. This has a good chance of lengthening the war & associated suffering.
The 3rd humanitarian convoy in as many days has reached #Gaza from #Egypt via the #Rafah crossing. The #Palestinian Red Crescent said the 20 trucks were loaded with food, water and medical supplies. UNRWA, which looks after Palestinans in Gaza says its fuel reserves are nearly exhausted, meaning water desalination plants, hospitals or bakeries may be unable to work in couple of days. #Israel says it's not permitting fuel deliveries because they could be commandeered by Hamas.
Israel Still Blocking Aid to Civilians in Gaza

The Israeli government is deliberately deepening the suffering of civilians in Gaza by refusing to restore the flow of water and electricity and blocking fuel shipments. Willfully impeding relief supplies is a war crime, as is collectively punishing civilians for the actions of armed groups.

Human Rights Watch
UK foreign sec Cleverly has told the #BBC that #Hamas "has habitually brutalised #Palestinian people... Hamas published videos of water pipes funded by the EU being torn up and turned into missiles". (thought to refer to an al-Qassam Brigades vid - where they appear to be digging water pipes out of the desert and turning them into missiles. The BBC has not verified it).
He claimed Hamas is using "fuel which could be used for the desalination plants to send rockets into Israel".
