The platform formerly known as #Twitter rolls out a new ad format that can't be reported or blocked. https://mashable.com/article/twitter-x-new-clickbait-ad-format
X rolls out new ad format that can't be reported, blocked

The new ads also don't disclose who the advertiser is or that they are even ads.

Mashable
@w7voa I'm sure that will reverse the trend of lower ad revenues. 🙄
@w7voa wow! Still more incentive to leave! Well done!
@
@piratero @w7voa yes, Elon Musk is the best sponsor mastodon could ever find
@w7voa this platform can't die quick enough
@w7voa Can't be blocked? Gonna bet this copy of uBlock that they can be...
@w7voa I don't know, uninstalling the app is a pretty effective ad blocker!
@w7voa well, sure it can. You just reported it, and I blocked twitter ages ago by deleting my account and making sure it never darkens my screens again!
@darwinwoodka @w7voa And I've blacklisted all of xitter's domains in NextDNS, except for Vine.
@w7voa log out and never log back in. Permanent block
@w7voa @Gargron Need every eye possible.

@w7voa

"There is no "promoted" or "ad" label on any of these types of ads that Mashable has seen. "

But isn't this illegal?

@n1k @w7voa i think in Germany it would be illegal.
@n1k @w7voa Musk doesn't care what is or isn't legal, just what he can get away with.
@w7voa
Describe toxicity without describing toxicity...

@w7voa I honestly wonder about the sanity of those still using it. It's like how you wonder about someone who stays in an abusive relationship always expecting tomorrow to be the day they will no longer be beaten and abused.

AFAIK Twitter isn't like MAGA where supporters are constantly assured the outside is a hostile work full of woke rapists and murderers who will force them into gender reassignment camps.

So Twitter users have no one but themselves to blame for being held hostage.

@w7voa I'm no legal eagle, or even a legal pigeon, but I'm fairly sure that violates several EU rules on advertising.

https://iabeurope.eu/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/20161207_IAB-Europe-Online-Native-Advertising-Guidance.pdf

@bitflipped @w7voa yes ads must be identifiable as such. First rule.
@w7voa yet another reason to dump xhitter. Anyone who is still on there, well, it can only get worse...

@w7voa "In fact, the new ad format also doesn't disclose... that it is even an advertisement at all."

I bet there's some government agencies who would love to look into that.

@w7voa Ok, so Elmo was ”fighting bots” just so he could sell them himself!

I see, makes sense now.

Also creepy as hell. Good luck with ”the truth” there, Musk. 🤔

@w7voa Getting to be about as "user-friendly" as a rabid dog.
@w7voa It doesnt take much imagination to think of all the ways this is going to be abused. I left alot of communities and content behind to make the switch to Mastodon, and this just makes me glad I put in the effort.

@w7voa Hah… nope, I think you'll find that ad format is easily blocked.

You simply tell your DNS server to not resolve the domain… that blocks the ads, and best of all, none of the good bits are lost in the process.

@stuartl @w7voa "chumbox advertising" ha ha
@stuartl @w7voa and if you’re not running your own DNS server because you only use one computer you can do the same in your hosts file.
@stuartl @w7voa If you use NextDNS, you also get a page to say that it's blocked, and not just down!

@EdanOsborne @w7voa Nope, `unbound` here… as shipped in OpenBSD.

I could do something similar, tell OpenHTTPD to host a site and point an `A` or `AAAA` record to it for each site I want to block, but I already know I'm blocking that domain, and why. No one else uses my section of the home network.

@w7voa I'm glad I'm out of that crap
@w7voa it's not like it's illegal not to show that your ads are ads, oh wait
@w7voa that breaks multiple eu and UK laws

@w7voa

Nothing says Republican billionaire donors don't care about freedom than "we can force you to watch our ads, or else".

Nothing says "we can buy any corrupt Supreme Court Justice or consumer protection agency or politician that we want, and get away with it."

Fascist billionaires going shopping for a new fascist wannabe isn't an improvement.

@w7voa This is blatantly illegal in the United States. Not that the law ever seems to stop Elon, but I'm sure the FTC is going to have a look at this.

@w7voa Another step down.. 😟

Hopefully this will bring more people to the Fedi

@stux @w7voa

That place is an ever-worsening, unpleasant dumpster 🔥

#TwitterMigration

@w7voa it seems like nothing unethical these firms are doing like youtube forcibly removing dislikes, reddit removing third party access and forcing ads or twitter doing so many awful changes is really affecting these platforms. Like at all.

All the users just seem to continue using these platforms. I wonder why

@w7voa With every move it's evident how carefully the platform is selecting its target audience. They only want to have the kind of people who will put up with their crap, in order to sell to them. And they will succeed in that.

Whether this strategy will pay out remains to be seen. I like to think there are not enough brainwashed idiots around to sustain #twitter, but recent history rings like a cautionary tale. My optimism might be misplaced.
