Microsoft’s Phil Spencer says acquiring Nintendo would be ā€˜a career moment’

In an August 2020 email to two top Microsoft executives, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer wrote that acquiring Nintendo ā€œwould be a career moment and I honestly believe a good move for both companies.ā€

@siracusa šŸ’Æ. Id hate it if apple were to do it as well, but this would be worse. I like what Phil is doing over at MS, but i dont want more market consolidation.
@siracusa I. hope. it. never. happens.
@siracusa is he unaware of what happened with Blizzard/Activision? Does he think that that sale succeeding would somehow make it easier to buy another console company?
@siracusa While I think Microsoft owning Nintendo would be terrible, a "Nintendo Games Pass" sounds intriguing. The excitement for the back catalogs of Nintendo's retro consoles is being fulfilled by other companies like Analogue.
@MyNameis__John @siracusa That’s kinda available with Nintendo Online already, though

@avakining @siracusa Yes, but it could be so much better in my opinion.

Although Microsoft Games Pass is much more expensive, so there’s a balance.

@MyNameis__John @avakining @siracusa especially in a future world without Miyamoto.

I do think Apple should consider, and by the same token we shouldn’t even be saying THAT out loud.

@Chancerubbage @siracusa I think Nintendo is fine. They sell everything at a profit and move fast enough to mitigate flops.
@MyNameis__John @siracusa I don’t think Nintendo will even notice, certainly some Microsoft chestthumper feeling his oats trying to make a name for himself in a public bragging contest. If this means anything, such public overtures are probably a sign that MS fellow is on his way out of the company
@siracusa It’s truly a cursed acquisition – we all love Nintendo just as they are, and the idea of anyone (even Apple) buying them would result in a wall of anger. Some things should just be left to be beautiful 🌸
@twostraws The part about ā€œactivist investorsā€ buying up stock and then demanding ā€œbetter performanceā€ from the stock, adding pressure on Nintendo’s board of directors to accept an acquisition makes me sick to my stomach.
@siracusa @twostraws The history of the world as we're living it.
@twostraws @siracusa the thing is, lots of people want Y company to buy Nintendo. Outside of the corporate wall st angle (mo rev), what do people advocating for it _want_ out of that acquisition? What about nintendo makes them say ā€˜yeah, they need help’?
@siracusa Nintendo under MS: ā€œLink is a space marine or something now, idkā€
@siracusa You people aren’t thinking enough about what this would mean for Phil’s career.
@siracusa the phrase ā€œlate stage capitalismā€ is often overused…but I think this would qualify.

@siracusa

It would never happen, and if it did it would only be because Nintendo was already dead and what makes them special gone.

@siracusa I’m feeling a bit sick now. Argh.
@siracusa is he really posing in front of a television?
@siracusa Michael Scott no god please no.gif
@siracusa I feel like this fundamentally misunderstands Nintendo. Any of us long time followers understand that Nintendo is principled in a way that prevents this. I’m not even sure how this would shake out if Nintendo was in the most dire of financial circumstances.

@siracusa Creating a gaming monopoly would be a career moment, and we should all hope nobody ever does it.
@siracusa NGL if someone had to buy Nintendo I would rather it be Microsoft than apple, as much as I dislike Microsoft they understand games and gamers more than apple ever has.
@siracusa As an xbox fan I wouldn't mind it but there is absolutely no way the EU would allow this.
@siracusa What will make Microsoft stop this nonsense?
