Opinion | I Was Attacked by Donald Trump and Elon Musk. I Believe It Was a Strategy To Change What You See Online.

Yoel Roth argues that his experiences being attacked by Trump and Musk were part of a greater strategy — one that is changing what all of us see online.

@yoyoel so disturbing to read how you have been treated and to consider the broader implications for our modern world.

Thank you for speaking up and continuing to tell your story.

@yoyoel

It's easy to tune a lot of these things out. But @yoyoel did a good job of connecting a lot of things together to paint the (rather grim) picture of where we are and where things are going.

@yoyoel thank you for continuing to stand strong here. I know from firsthand experience it is not easy to say the least, as someone who has published a very personal story of sexual assault in the New York Times - thankfully, with far less prominent and numerous attacks against me - but it makes a difference.
@yoyoel I think the second paragraph has a typo? I think it was meant to say Mr Musk instead, given Trump didn't buy Twitter
@yoyoel how do you feel about NYTimes continuing to give Trump a platform? Front page news over and over. Isn’t this itself misinformation: https://mastodon.social/@dangillmor/111083672689052173#
@yoyoel Heartbreaking, and enraging. I’m very sorry you’ve been subjected to such ugly vitriol and attacks. My deepest thanks go to you for standing up for all of us back then, and for shining a spotlight on the MAGA right’s abuses now.
@yoyoel I hope you are flourishing in your new role(s) now. Thank you for writing this editorial and speaking out over the past years.

@yoyoel

One good thing about here not true of Shitter and Tik Tik is you can repeat the mantra and truth the United States is a shithole country endlessly and have it not fall on completely deaf ears.

It is indeed a war with the extremist right powers that be. If you don’t think what has happened with Iran can happen here, you’re sadly mistaken. It can and will without severe pushback.

NBC giving that mother fucker Trump airtime without pushback is just one indicator of that.

@yoyoel I'm really sorry that this happened to you. Your editorial paints a bleak picture. It feels like the approach that you took at Twitter is just too vulnerable to the kinds of attacks you describe. Question is, is there a different approach that doesn't suffer the same vulnerability?
@abhayakara @yoyoel Promoting and encouraging the use of open source alternatives to corporate platforms might help...

@JustinH @yoyoel

That's an easy answer, but it's actually the same answer: "we need the right institutions." The base assumption is that some institution will protect us—we just haven't found the right one yet.

I don't think this is actually true. I think that the only thing that can really protect us is grass roots communication—the kind that doesn't have a single point of attack.

As soon as there is a institution-centered organizing, the institution can and will be attacked.

@JustinH @yoyoel (I should add, by the way, that I'm open to other answers. I just don't think "a better platform" is the right answer on its own. Mastodon is much more amenable to grassroots communication than twitter, so in that sense it's definitely better!)
@yoyoel We have met the enemy and they are rich.

@yoyoel Cool, the American social media platforms have deplatformed themselves in Europe :)

Is that what you are trying to tell us?

Because these investments are mandatory under new EU laws.

Great idea to castrate American competitiveness.

@yoyoel It was Twitter's inaction that led to this. If it had sorted out its computational propaganda problem back in 2015 we wouldn't have had Brexit, Trump or Elon's Xcrement. Instead of clamping down Twitter had an executive sitting on the board of a company that used fake engagements to trend hashtags. Twitter wasn't alone. Google was there too.

The door was left wide open.

Using network effects to promote social good turned out to be a two edged sword didn't it.

Beware the Brexit bots: The Twitter spam out to swing your vote

Bots are flooding Twitter with messages promoting both camps in the EU referendum. But their potential to influence the way we vote reaches far beyond social media

@yoyoel
worse than I had imagined.
Great writing Yoel.
I'm so sorry.
@yoyoel I appreciated #KaraSwisher and her defense of you in her interview with #WalterIsaacson re his #biography of #ElonMusk. Please accept my gratitude for your decency and truth telling self. You are a gem and do not deserve the treatment you have received.

@yoyoel Indeed!

“…the essential humanness of #online trust & #safety efforts. It isn’t machine learning models & faceless algorithms behind 🔑content mod decisions: it’s people. & people can be pressured, intimidated, threatened & extorted. Standing up to injustice, #authoritarianism & online harms requires employees who are willing to do that work.

Few people could be expected to take a job doing so if the cost is their life or liberty. We all need to recognize this new reality…”

@yoyoel I’m terrified for democracy around the world. 2024 is massively important.

@yoyoel I read your column yesterday. Shared it with some friends, who read it and then succinctly responded "We are fucked."

As long as burning down civilization has no cost for the perpetrators of the crime, the fires will continue.

@yoyoel Hope you are now is a safe location.

" #Trump publicly attacked me. Two years later, following his acquisition of #Twitter and after I resigned my role as the company’s head of trust and safety, #ElonMusk added fuel to the fire. I’ve lived with armed guards outside my home and have had to upend my family, go into hiding for months and repeatedly move.

...It wasn’t just personal vindictiveness or #CancelCulture It was a strategy — one that affects... all of us"

@yoyoel YOUR interview on The Verge is powerful. 💪🏽

It’s tragic how long Swisher took to change from being an enabler of his to facing reality of what type of person he proves he is. 😐
