Since 2020, I’ve been at the epicenter of a wide-reaching campaign to intimidate social media platforms into backing away from their investments in safety and security. It worked.

@yoyoel so disturbing to read how you have been treated and to consider the broader implications for our modern world.
Thank you for speaking up and continuing to tell your story.
please help grow the #fediverse.
One good thing about here not true of Shitter and Tik Tik is you can repeat the mantra and truth the United States is a shithole country endlessly and have it not fall on completely deaf ears.
It is indeed a war with the extremist right powers that be. If you don’t think what has happened with Iran can happen here, you’re sadly mistaken. It can and will without severe pushback.
NBC giving that mother fucker Trump airtime without pushback is just one indicator of that.
That's an easy answer, but it's actually the same answer: "we need the right institutions." The base assumption is that some institution will protect us—we just haven't found the right one yet.
I don't think this is actually true. I think that the only thing that can really protect us is grass roots communication—the kind that doesn't have a single point of attack.
As soon as there is a institution-centered organizing, the institution can and will be attacked.
@yoyoel Cool, the American social media platforms have deplatformed themselves in Europe :)
Is that what you are trying to tell us?
Because these investments are mandatory under new EU laws.
Great idea to castrate American competitiveness.
@yoyoel It was Twitter's inaction that led to this. If it had sorted out its computational propaganda problem back in 2015 we wouldn't have had Brexit, Trump or Elon's Xcrement. Instead of clamping down Twitter had an executive sitting on the board of a company that used fake engagements to trend hashtags. Twitter wasn't alone. Google was there too.
The door was left wide open.
Using network effects to promote social good turned out to be a two edged sword didn't it.
@yoyoel Long before Musk took over the warnings were clear, and ignored.
@yoyoel Indeed!
“…the essential humanness of #online trust & #safety efforts. It isn’t machine learning models & faceless algorithms behind 🔑content mod decisions: it’s people. & people can be pressured, intimidated, threatened & extorted. Standing up to injustice, #authoritarianism & online harms requires employees who are willing to do that work.
Few people could be expected to take a job doing so if the cost is their life or liberty. We all need to recognize this new reality…”
@yoyoel I read your column yesterday. Shared it with some friends, who read it and then succinctly responded "We are fucked."
As long as burning down civilization has no cost for the perpetrators of the crime, the fires will continue.
" #Trump publicly attacked me. Two years later, following his acquisition of #Twitter and after I resigned my role as the company’s head of trust and safety, #ElonMusk added fuel to the fire. I’ve lived with armed guards outside my home and have had to upend my family, go into hiding for months and repeatedly move.
...It wasn’t just personal vindictiveness or #CancelCulture It was a strategy — one that affects... all of us"

@yoyoel YOUR interview on The Verge is powerful. 💪🏽
It’s tragic how long Swisher took to change from being an enabler of his to facing reality of what type of person he proves he is. 😐
