"When you drive a massive SUV you’re saying three things: I don’t care about the environment. I don’t care that I’m more likely to kill pedestrians in my car. I don’t care that there isn’t room for my car and others to co-habit smoothly on London’s streets."

Ugly, vulgar and a climate catastrophe — we should ban SUVs in London or tax them to the max

What upsets me most about life in London today? The endless proliferation of “luxury flats” marketed abroad while ordinary Londoners can’t afford to rent a basic home? Yes, that upsets me. The fact that so many young people in the capital are so utterly devoid of manners that they see nothing wrong with listening to their phones on public transport without headphones? Deeply upsetting on an existential, future-of-mankind level. How about grown men often nearly knocking me or my children over on the pavement with their giant-man-baby electric scooters? Yup. Pretty upsetting.

Oh this is too good. Since Twitter is now blocking Mastodon links, someone has created a link shortener to hide them. Gotta love the URL:

Free speech really should be free. To bypass the new censorship regime at twitter, use this URL shortener to link to Mastodon or other censored destinations. Considering recent policy decisions on twitter, please be aware that use of links generated from this site may constitute a violation of their policy.

With each new surge of Mastodon users, I feel the need to point out:

1. Welcome!

2. There is a learning curve here, but most people find it short and not very steep. Play around, explore. You'll get it.

3. Lots of people are willing to help.

4. Yes, it's different than Twitter. Sometimes in good ways, sometimes not. But you'll figure it out.

5. With surges especially, things sometimes get slow/glitchy, but they usually get fixed pretty quick.

Be patient.

This is not a joke: San Francisco Police want to arm robots for use against the public. You can help stop them. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2022/11/red-alert-sfpd-want-power-kill-robots
Red Alert: The SFPD Want the Power to Kill with Robots

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors will vote soon on a policy that would allow the San Francisco Police Department to use deadly force by arming its many robots. This is a spectacularly dangerous idea and EFF’s stance is clear: police should not arm robots.TAKE ACTIONEMAIL YOUR SUPERVISOR: don'...

@chancerydaily 🙂

Take a chance on me or with me or both?

A rich guy with a bruised ego shouldn’t have the power to disrupt your life online. Building an interoperable social media could cut them out of the equation. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2022/11/fediverse-could-be-awesome-if-we-dont-screw-it
The Fediverse Could Be Awesome (If We Don’t Screw It Up)

This post is part of a series on Mastodon and the fediverse. We also have a post on what the fediverse is, security and privacy on Mastodon, and how to make a Mastadon account. You can follow EFF on Mastodon here.Something remarkable is happening. For the past two weeks, people have been leaving...
