#NowPlaying: #OrchestralManoeuversInTheDark - Junk Culture
2015 European 2×#CD reissue.
I have been wanting to get my hands on this version for ages and it finally arrived here today. Junk Culture marks a drastic departure for the band. Their previous Dazzle Ships failed miserably and was very inaccessible, so with this record they tried to get poppy and mainstream, and it worked! Though they didn't really get rid of their experimentation yet, more of it would come back on Crush and The Pacific Age. Standout tracks for me are Junk Culture - setting the mood, Love and Violence - cathartic, and the beautiful Talking Loud and Clear, which is sensitive and smooth with a gradual buildup. The reason why I wanted this deluxe version, was because the bonus disc contains a lot of good stuff and demos (which could very well be finished songs). Garden City is a favourite B-side of mine, but the real standout is the brilliant Heaven Is (Highland Studios Demo). It's got a jarring drum rhythm, not unlike #NewOrder's Blue Monday (this fact in turn got the song scrapped until 1993's Liberator), and some insanely catchy melodies. This track might be better than anything even on the album!
