If you're wondering why there are so few news stories about the rise of #Mastodon, it's because nobody is getting paid to game the media about it.

There's no publicists, no cozy ad deals, no suits, no coercion: Nobody is getting rich off of Mastodon

... that's also why it's so enlightening and fun to participate here

@maria Did you deploy search?

@aguamielerogpz

@unitof is figuring it out!

@maria @aguamielerogpz Did y’all on Newsie? Would love to chat with someone about what it took.
@unitof @maria ha ha No, that is why I'm asking too. I haven't seen our administration talk about it.

@aguamielerogpz @unitof @maria

4.2 is still in beta and newsie is short of $600/mo in funding of its operations. Deploying additional features is probably not a priority right now.

@ekes @unitof @maria I was precisely curious about how the search could affect costs.
@maria The ownership of the configuration of my timeline; the absence of a right-wing algorythm; the improved safety of my own data are advantages that the vast majority of the internet users around the world unfortunatelly don’t care about.
@maria @heliopaz So many people who have eloquently savaged Twitter have turned right around and gone to Threads. It’s like… WHAT?
@wampusmm @maria Threads is Meta: Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Of course you know that but I always try to explain to people who aren’t tech-savy ant they are never concerned about data proteccion.
@maria Will full text search change that?

@phaedral

nope! because it's being done the right way (opt-in)

@maria Being anti-commercial does keep the journos away. And celebrities.

But no reason why government agencies can’t maintain a presence here.

It’s a niche user base, and will probably remain so. Good moderation on top of that is what makes it fun for me. Twitter used to be that way around 2012.

@staidwinnow @maria main logistical challenge for the agencies: deciding on an instance to join. Or figuring out how to setup and fund their own instance.

Not an insurmountable wall but a basic set of decisions that has to get solved first.

@maria So it's like broccoli then...
@maria I think this is ... sort of true -- but also has much more to do with the fact that the media is pretty bad at covering slow-moving stories (see also, up until very recently, climate change)
@maria It’s chill. The people are cool. I feel welcome. I like it.
@maria You said it. Every paid ad and generated post is one less opportunity to connect with actual sentient humans, and hear what's important to us!
@maria Yeah, I constantly see the tech media dubbing something the "new Twitter." Meanwhile, we're still here with no interest in leaving. 💁‍♂️

@maria

Maybe Mastodon is a place where people can come to peace that more isn't always better.

@maria

I'm happy about that. Much better if Mastodon keeps growing organically through us who care about using it good.

@maria the one mention I have seen positions Blue Sky somehow as the established player and fediverse/Mastodon as somehow the new player

@Byte

I know haha Bluesky is so tiny

and so many moderation problems and all!! yoicks

Have had fun there, but Mastodon is the place to build!!!!

@maria

Is Mastodon rising? Is there a comparison available of Mastodon numbers to other platforms?

I love it here, and I'm hoping that over time, more folks will recognize the value in democratic social media.

At this point, I have not successfully talked anyone into joining Mastodon. I know one other person, personally, and only I only barely know him, on Mastodon.

But still, I love it here and will not go back to corporate social media!!

@jennyzilliac

Heck yes, It's hard to get even 10,000 people to read a news article online; Masto has more than 10 million registered users. It's wildly impressive growth and uptake. And early days yet.

@maria

I don't like to be contrary, but the number of registered users on a platform doesn't reveal the number of folks who read an article.

I remember well when Facebook was gaining traction, I knew lots of people who were jumping on board. I literally know one neighbor (barely), and no friends or family, who are getting on Mastodon.

That said, I find it baffling that pretty much everyone I know who uses social media is willing to serve as a pawn for the undemocratic power elites. As an optimist, I believe that will change over time, but I wish it would happen faster.

I'd love to see surprising numbers that indicate we are getting there faster than I think we are.

@jennyzilliac

"Traffic" numbers as they've been understood so far are no indication of influence or quality (or even readership, as such numbers are easily faked)

I've been an editor for a long time and believe me it ain't easy to tempt even 10,000 real live human beings to read an excellent article or essay all the way through. It's very noisy out there!

@maria

I sense that we are talking past each other and fear I missed a key bit of information that you already posted. I don't understand where you are getting information about articles reaching 10,000 Mastodon users. Please forgive me if I have a blind spot here. I just don't understand.

@jennyzilliac

No no my fault. I just meant, as an editor of web publications I've seen how hard it is to get a lot of people to come over, to read, etc.

Twitter too grew in fits and starts. So many jokes about the 'fail whale' ...

My Masto post today (7 hours ago) has more than 1K likes and 692 boosts, I had to shut off the speaker on my computer from all the plinging.

So like... from where I sit the success of this platform, in so few months, is really breathtaking.

@maria

Got it!! Love it!! Great news and congratulations. 🌞🌞🌞

@jennyzilliac @maria

I folllow @mastodonusercount which is a bot that posts an update on active users regularly. The number of users has been increasing very slowly but steadily; we're close to 14 million now.

@vanellopemint @maria @mastodonusercount

I also follow that bot and get excited when I see huge numbers of new members.

You mention "active" users, and I'm not seeing that.

@maria That implies that somebody is somehow getting rich from Threads - are there actually any advertisers in Threads already?

@csolisr facebook is trying to capture the microblogging market. they're losing some money now in hopes of big money later

this is generally how capitalists operate

@maria cool if I screen grab and even link to for posting in that deathstar of falsity LinkedIn?

@maria Also worth noting is that covering Mastodon as a news story runs counter to the self-interest of those in the media.

News organizations know the majority of their followers are still on other platforms where they profit from clickbait engagement. If they start talking about Mastodon as a viable alternative to those hell sites, they lose followers. When they lose followers, they lose money. Doing a story about Mastodon is literally a drain on profit.

@maria This sentiment seems popular but wrong. We all know journalists love(d) Twitter. It was one place they could go to find stories that they knew would drive article views, because the tweets about it were already capturing attention. When writing about those events, Twitter inevitably became part of the story. They may eventually have to break up with it and if they come here, you'll see the same thing happen here. This isn't necessarily a good thing. I regret how tabloid the news became.

@williamgunn

I'm a journalist! We didn't/don't all use Twitter the same way, or for the same purposes, then or now. Research, finding colleagues abroad, gauging the temperature of breaking news... many many reasons

Now I have it as a forwarding address, and to tell people to come here, and occassionally to boost stories... but I only really engage here, and to a lesser extent on bluesky

These distinctions matter a lot, because journalism can focus public attention in both good ways and bad.

@maria Unfortunately, the most recent stories about it have instead been pretty much paid hit pieces by those same companies that see Mastadon as a threat, in addition to high-profile celebrities like Neil Gaiman recently posting that he found Mastadon unpleasant due to inappropriate responses (as if those aren't blockable, or as if they aren't issues on all social networking platforms.)
@maria You are so right! I hadn’t thought of it that way before!

@maria

lots of alternative media is shit. conspiratorial nonsense. but the fact that it also has less money and attention behind it leads lots of people to dismiss it when they shouldn't.

alternative media is also less encumbered by the need to comfort the comfortable. so then many others over index on this real concern, rejecting too much much of the mainstream and reflexively accepting too much that challenges it.

same elements at play here imo.

@maria I would agree, yes the paid ads are far and few between. Also, the amount of content is less because of how many users are using this app, it seems worse than other media apps; however it once you are using it, it becomes like a book; after opening a book you can look into how it works, and what it does!
@maria yes it's a refreshing change ... hope it can stay this way.
@maria wasn't wondering about it so much as depending upon it!
@maria It's also great, because SEO "experts", engagement farmers, and crypto-weenies are getting absolutely zero traction, and instance admins are quick to shut them down when they try.
@maria I think the other issue is mastodon usership isn't growing and so it's a niche news item.

@benleis

Not growing?!

(also: Twitter itself had a very chaotic rise fall crash rise etc. to its eventual prominence)

https://techcrunch.com/2023/07/24/as-twitter-destroys-its-brand-by-renaming-itself-x-mastodon-usage-numbers-are-again-soaring/

TechCrunch is part of the Yahoo family of brands

@maria yeah the MAU has been declining from 2.1m down to just under 1.8m since midsummer
@maria IMO there needs to be growth past the prev high of 2.6m or at least a consistent pattern of organic growth not just driven by Twitter that then fades away before things become really "newsworthy"

@benleis

Maybe, but the numbers don't matter to me .00001% as much as the quality and depth of engagement

Just like Twitter was only ever a fraction of the size of Facebook, yet its influence on global public opinion was far greater

@maria I don't disagree on that score. I'm happy here but the health of the network does drive news. And long term I want more people here. The network is good but could be much richer if say we reached 10m.

@benleis

I think it's gonna happen, just not all at once

@benleis

like the man said... "It will fluctuate."

@maria YMMV but this is not fluctuation it's a consistent week over week trend and it hasn't bottomed out yet. Hopefully it will be higher than the last trough of 1.2m prior to the midsummer Twitter scare.
@maria I'm waiting for the first mainstream rapper to name-drop Mastodon. (Or has it happened already?)
@maria i might do if ya want but i don't think it'll be easy to get a conversation with developers (dansup, stux, etc…) cause wiki also isnt full…
also - soonly will be yet more busy than now (and even now i have many tasks…)
