Hey, it doesn't matter how long it takes you to reach the right destination. Only that you eventually arrive 😉

#Firefox #Chrome #Google

@thunderbird Any browser that defeats ad blockers isn’t worth having. #micdrop

It’s right up there with streaming services that expect you to pay and watch ads. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

@thunderbird

@brave Browser FTW 😋

@manankanchu @thunderbird brave is based on chromium, is run by an ass, and has been doing shady shit since forever.

@prosaluxemburg @thunderbird

Well, it does it's job, almost no ads ...

It uses the chromium search engine but not the ad env ...

https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/wiki/Deviations-from-Chromium-(features-we-disable-or-remove)

... and I guess, we're unluckily getting used to corporates with "strange" management 🤐

Deviations from Chromium (features we disable or remove)

@manankanchu @thunderbird upsides of Firefox, in particular with uBlock :) if you want more privacy by default, VPN provider Mullvad has developed a browser based on Firefox in collaboration with the Tor project :)

@prosaluxemburg @thunderbird

I guess, privacy is a pretty theoretical thing as of today ... you always have to trust software, network and content to a certain extent ... no guarantees that such browser/whateversoftware, VPN provider or TOR nodes doesn't fiddle around with your traffic 😎

@manankanchu @prosaluxemburg @thunderbird Tor and other projets are open source. You can inspect them. And they are reliable.

@parigotmanchot @prosaluxemburg @thunderbird

that doesn't help if nodes are monitored ...

@manankanchu @parigotmanchot I mean, https is still not broken. Doesn’t matter what exit nodes do if the traffic is encrypted.

@prosaluxemburg @parigotmanchot

My message is only: stay alert

meta data (IP addresses, fingerprints ...) are as valuable as content.

even with TOR: m-i-m and triangulations are there ...

https://surfshark.com/blog/is-tor-browser-safe#:~:text=Compromised%20nodes%20allow%20malicious%20parties,from%20Tor%20via%20that%20node.

If someone controls the traffic of the destination IP you're lost and TOR does not help you at all.

Is the Tor Browser safe? - Surfshark

Tor hides user IP addresses and encrypts traffic but has weaknesses with encryption at entry and exit nodes. These weaknesses can be eliminated with a VPN.

@manankanchu @prosaluxemburg @thunderbird I think the relevant guarantee in this case is that a browser owned by a for-profit corporation will eventually turn evil.
@prosaluxemburg @manankanchu @thunderbird "ass" does not *begin* to cover his consistently terrible behavior over the decades. "Bigot" is more descriptive. So is "guy who foisted Javascript on the world."
@manankanchu i.e. Chrome in a trenchcoat and a dash of homophobia
@thunderbird @brave

@noodlejetski @manankanchu @thunderbird @brave don't forget a custom cryptocurrency and *replacing* ads with their own!

Brave is as about as shady as can be while *just barely* not tripping everyone's alarms.

@thunderbird I feel like I'm missing some context :D.
@thunderbird firefox? Definitely not. We are incompatible. For now I'm ok with Falkon.
@mykolak I'd use Falkon if they had a Dark Reader extension.
@mmmgaming yeah, almost absence of plugins is its biggest disadvantage. But I like KWallet integration.
@thunderbird Ad blockers are disability accommodation for those of us who take seizures from rapid animations.
@thunderbird edge is based on chrome will it get effected too?
@Fakepivot Probably. Brave - another Chromium fork - will not be impacted because it has adblock hardcoded into it.
@mmmgaming uhhh damn, i like few things about edge and also one of the key extension i use called hand tool is not there in Firefox.
@thunderbird
I see a lot of people switching from Chome to [chrome but different logo] because they don't realize their new browser is also just chrome.
@thunderbird I agree and people should be using Firefox anyway but at the same time it's not that simple. If web sites adopt wei you won't be able to use Firefox to get around it. It basically needs to be stopped.
@thunderbird getting a strong feeling this morning that google has sabotaged FF - broken & unresponsive links all over, including google's search results…
@thunderbird Flock to LibreWolf instead. Despite having support for ad blockers, Firefox itself has sponsored links and "recommended" crap on the home tab. It pops up Mozilla VPN ads randomly. If you're going to champion ad blockers don't be adware yourself.
@CalcProgrammer1 @thunderbird To be fair, promotions for their own products like Relay, VPN, etc should be fine as they need revenue and users need those privacy products and should support them so @[email protected] can minimise their dependence on Google or exit the partnership altogether.
@thunderbird I punted on Chrome when I noticed how many inbound ports it was opening. To make matters worse it wasn't easy to find why they were being opened. In all seriousness can someone please explain to me why a web browser needs to open inbound/listening ports?

@thunderbird

Can we really fly like that?

@thunderbird if Firefox would be a performant Browser, and would follow web standard better. I would use it.

@tobiasctrl @thunderbird #firefox isn't the problem. Google is the problem. The #Chromium monopology on the internet is what causes these problems because people don't account for Firefox when designing their webpages which forces Firefox to have to fix these issues itself. It's an uphill battle for Firefox!

The entire Internet has built a staircase that only Chromium browsers are allowed to use then has the audacity to tell Firefox that it's the slow one and the broken one while it's having to scale up the side of the mountain, which only reinforces the monopoly Google has on the internet, which it has tricked us into building for it.

Moreover, when is the last time you used Firefox? The desktop version of Firefox is objectively faster than Chrome these days according to benchmarks. And unless someone else designs a brand-new kind of browser, Firefox is our only hope in stopping the Google monopoly.

@daedalousilios @tobiasctrl @thunderbird Users (some or many of them) can also be part of the problem. Contributing nothing while demanding everything including zero reliance on #Google and removal of #GoogleSearch. As users, we should subscribe to #Mozilla products like #VPN, #FirefoxRelay, etc if we can so they have an ethical revenue stream and do not need #BigTech money to survive.
@tobiasctrl @thunderbird In this case, Firefox not following the web standard better is actually a bit of a benefit here, because they won't immediately follow the WEI setup.
@tobiasctrl @thunderbird chrome follow web standard ? Ha-ha ! You make my day ! 🤣🤣🤣
@thunderbird @computer good luck disabling my DNS sinkhole
@thunderbird @computer although… doesn’t chrome have its own DNS resolver. Meh.
@thunderbird: In my book, Google deciding what sort of extensions people get to use based on its financial motivation is a raw use of power that should induce strong distrust in Google making good decisions about its products in the future among people who might otherwise be inclined to use Google's products.
@thunderbird I'm trying to remove Google from my life. But I'm writing this on Android. Although I'm running Firefox on it.
@MisterMaker @thunderbird You can install a #degoogled OS on it if there's one available for your device :)
Would recommend @GrapheneOS if it's a Pixel.
@MisterMaker @thunderbird
I am replying from the linux based phone #librem5.
It isn't for everyone yet, but if you are looking to degoogle your life, it is an option to look into.
Another option would be to find an old compatible phone and put #postmarketOS or degoogled android.
@jlcrawf @thunderbird Only issue is the banking aps that required Google security stuff.
@MisterMaker @thunderbird
I don't use any banking apps. I sign into my account through a web browser. If you require a banking app, then, yeah, #mobilinux might not be for you.
De-googling your life requires accepting some limitations and inconveniences. For me, it has been worth it.
@jlcrawf @MisterMaker @thunderbird And here another one replying from a #Librem5 #Linux phone. I'm very happy with it, even though some stuff is a bit less smooth. The phone is getting better every week.
@MisterMaker @thunderbird
Most user-friendly deGoogled Android I know is from @murena
@thunderbird What destination ? I've never left 😍
@thunderbird i wanted to migrate to firefox but i don't know where to beguin with

@thunderbird what's funny about this is that Internet browsers have literally the lowest switching costs of anything in life.

It's easier to change your browser than it is to change your shampoo.

"Hey here are two baskets of cherries. For every cherry you eat from the basket on the left you also have to eat some lutefisk. The basket on the right is just cherries. The cherries are exactly the same and you can switch at any time."

@thunderbird Firefox has to be customized with user.js to be truly based. For things that need Chrome due to Google’s unyielding control of web standards, I’ll run it in ungoogled chromium. Here’s a blog post that goes over some things to think about when considering a browser: https://www.unixsheikh.com/articles/choose-your-browser-carefully.html
Choose your browser carefully

@thunderbird However, in China, Firefox has already banned some ad-blocking extensions because of a lawsuit by some advertisers.
@thunderbird tbh i feel most ppl are unfortunately going to stick to chrome or chromium browsers !

@thunderbird Firefox, LibreWolf and Mullvad Browser FTW

Love Gecko browsers 💕
