Mike Pence referring to a “gaggle of crackpot lawyers” is rude, unprofessional, dehumanizing, and unbecoming a presidential candidate.

The preferred terminology is “The Federalist Society.”

@Popehat "A Federalist of lawyers"
@mackensen
@Popehat used to be treatable, but unfortunately has been developing antibiotic resistance.
@Popehat: He certainly is trying to get some mileage out of the fact that he actually did his job that day. And if he hadn't, he too would likely be under indictment, or at least listed as a co-conspirator looking over his shoulder for a coming indictment.
@goodreedAJ @Popehat I’m enjoying Mike “I let all of this go for four years and finally did the right thing once” Pence trying to milk this for all its worth.
@garretble @goodreedAJ @Popehat That’s all true, and I’m extremely grateful that when push came to shove he upheld his oath of office at great personal risk.
@garretble @Popehat: I'm glad he did too, but come on. Doing one's job in a situation where it's clear to all what that job is isn't grounds for sainthood. It could be argued that he'd have had far more personal risk had he succumbed to the criminal demands by Trump and company.
@Popehat The originalist case for crackpottery?
@Popehat hrm and here I thought the right terminology was Guilty AF.
@Popehat That would be the Federalist Society which has chapters at most major law schools.
@D_J_Nathanson @Popehat
Indeed. And the one that has captured scotus.
@Popehat I just can’t figure out who Pence appeals to. He’s demonized everyone on the left, alienated everyone in the center, and the right wants to string him up. 🧐
@genecowan @Popehat Must be why he’s under 2% then.

@genecowan @Popehat

And yet if he somehow became the nominee, the Republican rank-and-file would vote for him.

@genecowan @Popehat "Sensible" Republicans I guess? People who believe in all the capitalism stuff but want it done by a democratically elected government.
@katrinatransfem @Popehat It doesn’t feel like there are enough “sensible republicans” around to swing an election for PTA secretary.
@genecowan @Popehat And he has the charisma of DMV wall paint.
@Popehat A gaggle of crackpot lawyers pitch their ideas to a President.
[Insert a lengthy, horrifying, and explicit description of their ridiculous, depraved, and generally insane "legal" arguments]
President: "Very interesting. What do you call yourselves?"
Crackpot Lawyers, in unison: "The Federalists!"
@Popehat I would start attending social functions for lawyers if we all agreed to share our personal version of the Aristocrats/Federalists joke instead of the usual banter.
@coreyrayburnyung @Popehat "The Sanctioned Un-Indicted Co-Conspirators!"

@Popehat This is how John Eastman was described on FedSoc's website up until it became a PR issue for them.

The highlighted part was removed the day after it was announced that he was involved in the insurrection.

@Popehat I’m not surprised in the slightest, when there’s smoke there’s fire

@Popehat He’s such a douche 🤦🏼

“Almighty god.” FFS. Just like Cheetolini, he never should have been allowed in the White House. He did his job ONCE. No effing praise from me.

@Popehat lmao I get this now that my partner is in law school

@Popehat

I know some people went to Fed Soc meetings for the beer, unfortunately some went for the Kool Aid

@Popehat I HATE it when I have to agree with Mike Pence about anything.

But, there it is.

@Popehat
FYI: Ex-Trump counsel Pat Cipollone told the Jan 6 committee that Mike Pence should receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his actions on Jan 6.
@Popehat I don't know why Trump is even bothering to run. According to his theory, Kamala Harris is going to determine who the next president is. And she is Joe Biden's running mate!
@Popehat do VPs take an oath to almighty God? Asking for a friend.
@Popehat never thought I’d agree with Mike Pence
@Popehat Is there a term other than "crackpot" we can use to describe lawyers who're willing to represent a criminal former president and attempt to defend the indefensible?
#AskingForAFriend
@Popehat Pence could fairly be considered an expert on crackpots, but this time he is wrong
@Popehat fine fine. A “Federalist Society of crackpot lawyers”, since that seems to be the correct plural form.
@Popehat wait... how many rudy giulianis are there?

@Popehat

For Pence “a gaggle of crackpot lawyers” is preferable to a cluster fuck of hungry libs.
But Mother would have to whip him for even thinking that and it just might be much too pleasurable for both of them.

So he buried that thought into a box that he keeps in his brain and decided on “a gaggle of lawyers.”

His bravery brings tears to my eyes.

@Popehat He's right though… they are acting like complete and utter delusional loonies. It's like they ate a bowl of alphabet soup, shat it out into a bowl, and read off their legal arguments from its surface.

Seems to me, Mike Pence is a man of his word -- at least on this occasion.

We don't often see that in politics, in any nation. That sort of honesty needs to be encouraged, from all sides of politics.

@Popehat the critical insight is “… that day.”
@Popehat Well I thought for once he was right in his definition…
@Popehat Well, he's Mike Pence. Nuff said, methinks.

A screen capture of a Twitter post by Mike Pence
President Trump and his gaggle of crackpot lawyers asked me to reject electoral votes and chaos would have ensued. To keep faith with the oath that I made to the American people and to Almighty God, I did my duty that
day.

The video included is from Fox News with a text showing:
JOHN EASTMAN EMAIL TO PENCE LEGAL TEAM
...investigations, as well as to allow a full forensic audit of the massive amount of illegal activity that has occurred here." (The play button obscures part of "of illegal" and "occurred" in the banner).
It is shown as an excerpt from TRUMP INDICTMENT

@Popehat

It seems like defensive foreshadowing…

@Popehat Could Pence's comments be seen as part of a coordinated effort to hang Trump's role fomenting the insurrection on his legal team at the time, as has been reported?
@Popehat Wouldn't the proper term be a mistrial of crackpot lawyers?
@Popehat I mean that’s not very inclusive of “Stanford and Harvard law grads”

@Popehat the same group that earlier this year received $1.6 BILLION DONATION from a 90 year old Chicago man. BILLION ..

THIS WILL BUY A LOT OF CONGRESS.. and very likely draw in with $$$ some of the best legal minds to create arguments vs DOJ.
