Wait, oh nooo, when did this happen to infosec Twitter? πππ
An analysis by #Cyentia has shown that the once vibrant #infosec #Twitter community has all but largely disappeared starting around end of April to May 2023, with a major drop off in June into July. The researcher also notes that unfortunately because of Twitter's decision to end access to their free tier for data access, the last day data was available was on July 12th. #Twitter #birdsite #infosec #cybersecurity #community https://www.cyentia.com/the-death-of-infosec-twitter/ π
@jerry Get it, Jerry!
For the record, I don't know Jerry, but my first instinct is that he's a solid guy, and wants the best for this community, and that means a lot.
@lerg Hey, I'm not a huge fan of babies. They are SO RUDE.
;)
@jerry i picked up a nontrivial number of new followers over the last 48 hours.
evidently my account was listed on that spreadsheet of security/privacy folks lucasz (sp?) made public, so i assume that the combination of the "infosec twitter is dead" and being listed is what's driving that increase.
i don't know how to break it to my new followers that they're gonna get a ridiculous number of alabama football toots, along with periodic shitposting...
I wonder how the other instances are fairing? ππ€·ββοΈ
@jerry I've noticed that in fact that I can find better data on security elsewhere than on Twitter lately.
Not surprised TBH.
@jerry yeah, I continue to crosspost some things to Twitter, but I donβt know for how long Iβll continue doing itβ¦
Somewhat related: I migrated from mastodon.social to here not too long ago, after spending almost a year there and itβs been amazing over here! No wonder everyone wants to join infosec.exchange ;)
@jerry availability! Mastodon.social has a lot of performance issues when thereβs influx (and even outside of influx). Itβs a huge instance, so I understand, but it got tiring after while. I spend even more time on Mastodon now since I no longer scroll Reddit or Twitter.
Second biggest thing is the local feed here is just better imo, probably because this server is nicheβ¦ my home feed is great, especially with the hashtags I follow. Reading mastodon.socialβs local feed was really difficult for me.
Third, I guess the niche factor makes it more personal? My personal account is on cyberplace.social and I like that aspect about it too.
