Infosec.exchange has been in the top 5 or 6 for account growth over the past few days. That post about infosec tw*tter being dead has had a major impact.

@jerry

Wait, oh nooo, when did this happen to infosec Twitter? πŸ‘€πŸ‘€πŸ˜‰

@infosec_jcp @jerry In the past 2 months or so, the infosec community on Twitter just fell off a cliff: https://infosec.town/notes/9hc75g144a
@deltatux

An analysis by #Cyentia has shown that the once vibrant #infosec #Twitter community has all but largely disappeared starting around end of April to May 2023, with a major drop off in June into July. The researcher also notes that unfortunately because of Twitter's decision to end access to their free tier for data access, the last day data was available was on July 12th. #Twitter #birdsite #infosec #cybersecurity #community https://www.cyentia.com/the-death-of-infosec-twitter/ πŸ“Ž

Infosec.Town
@jerry I got like 20 new #followers and I was wondering if there was a new surge, I guess my suspects were correct!

@jerry Get it, Jerry!

For the record, I don't know Jerry, but my first instinct is that he's a solid guy, and wants the best for this community, and that means a lot.

@EvieAlways I am only human and make mistakes, but I try hard to make the world a slightly better place
@jerry We will all make mistakes, and that's ok, if we are doing the work to be better. I see you.
@EvieAlways @jerry Agreed, some times you just gotta roll around in the compliment.
@EvieAlways @jerry I mean, he kicks babies, but the rest is accurate. ;)

@lerg Hey, I'm not a huge fan of babies. They are SO RUDE.

;)

@EvieAlways true. Highly inconsiderate. No etiquette at all!
@lerg I would register the domain UncouthBabies.com, but I already own WAY TOO MANY bullshit domains 🀣
@lerg @EvieAlways it was self defense, I swear!
@jerry @EvieAlways You do seem to have a habit of driving babies to violence…
@lerg @jerry @EvieAlways at least he quit catching and eating them...
@andygreenphd @jerry @EvieAlways The factory farming idea wasn’t great though.
@jerry
Interesting that it's infosec.exchange in particular, not other infosec focused instances. I hope they're all doing well too.
@trolder @jerry ya infosec.town doesn't get the attention that it deserves lol. Though it is slowly growing, it was at what, 280 something yesterday? Added almost another 100 today I think?

Other servers like noc.social, ioc.exchange, defcon.social and cyberplace.social seems to be popular as well. Not as much as infosec.exchange but those communities do have a decent size...
@deltatux @trolder @jerry the only bummer about infosec.town is infosec.exchange can't grab the local feed.

I do think Firefish is much more robust and snappier than Mastodon. I could see fedia.social becoming a major Firefish instance since many people shy away from the tech or niche ones.
@FortunateFool @deltatux @trolder did you look at the recommended feed on Infosec.town?
@jerry @[email protected] @[email protected] other way around. I love that infosec.town grabs infoawc.exchange but bummed infosec.exchange can't grab infosec.town..
@FortunateFool @deltatux @trolder thanks for clarifying. I understand now. Sadly mastodon doesn’t have such a feature. Yet.
@jerry @deltatux but, I still have this account if I need to reach .exchange.
@FortunateFool @trolder @jerry The infosec.exchange feed is available under the Recommended Feed tab, it basically imports the local feed of infosec.exchange into infosec.town. Give it a try πŸ™‚!
@jerry good because it's awesome here IMNSHO
@jerry Congrats! What a great social home you have built for that community…. ✊
@jerry I may have replied to that when I saw people posting by saying β€œhave you heard they mostly went to infosec dot exchange?” 😁

@jerry i picked up a nontrivial number of new followers over the last 48 hours.

evidently my account was listed on that spreadsheet of security/privacy folks lucasz (sp?) made public, so i assume that the combination of the "infosec twitter is dead" and being listed is what's driving that increase.

i don't know how to break it to my new followers that they're gonna get a ridiculous number of alabama football toots, along with periodic shitposting...

#rolltide

@jerry rock and roll.
@hacks4pancakes @jerry Lesley, it's all your fault that I'm here 😁 No really, you inspired me to make the leap.
@jerry "that post" without a link. πŸ€”
@jerry Is infosec twitter the community of infosec experts on twitter?
@jerry can someone recommend some people over there worth following. I never did Twitter.. lol
Infosec Exchange

A Mastodon instance for info/cyber security-minded people.

Mastodon hosted on infosec.exchange
@jerry network effects gonna network

@jerry

I wonder how the other instances are fairing? πŸ™‚πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

@jerry I've noticed that in fact that I can find better data on security elsewhere than on Twitter lately.

Not surprised TBH.

@jerry yeah, I continue to crosspost some things to Twitter, but I don’t know for how long I’ll continue doing it…

Somewhat related: I migrated from mastodon.social to here not too long ago, after spending almost a year there and it’s been amazing over here! No wonder everyone wants to join infosec.exchange ;)

@avoidthehack I am curious: what do you like about Infosec.exchange vs mastodon.social?

@jerry availability! Mastodon.social has a lot of performance issues when there’s influx (and even outside of influx). It’s a huge instance, so I understand, but it got tiring after while. I spend even more time on Mastodon now since I no longer scroll Reddit or Twitter.

Second biggest thing is the local feed here is just better imo, probably because this server is niche… my home feed is great, especially with the hashtags I follow. Reading mastodon.social’s local feed was really difficult for me.

Third, I guess the niche factor makes it more personal? My personal account is on cyberplace.social and I like that aspect about it too.

@jerry welcome to the tired hungry masses who escaped from Central Planning/Centralized Corporate social media!
@jerry infosec twitter is dead, boost to kill it faster
@jerry wait, you mean that a "pay to boost" social network isn't the best place to publicly discuss security topics?~ I am shocked!~~
@dryak it's come as a big surprise to many, apparently
@jerry [insert Edvard Munch's "Scream" shocked face]
