Everyone, I have an idea:

We should create a global holiday:

Backup Day. Everyone gets a day off to stay at home and make sure that all important files are backed up. At the end of the day you have a family dinner and share a scary data loss story to scare the kids

Edit: as some have pointed out, there already is a Backup Day! It is March 31st so I expect no less then a large celebration on @fosstodon next year. Happy Backup day everyone!

World Backup Day - Wikipedia

@sotneStatue I am going to need longer than a day
@sotneStatue I thought 29 February already WAS backup day

@sotneStatue , ha, it seems it's 31 March now

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Backup_Day

... I could have sworn the joke was that it was only (cca.) every 4 years.

@sotneStatue make the day before "Recovery Day", so you'll know the day after, what to add to your backup.
@sotneStatue global holiday: yay!!! Backup day: meh...
@sotneStatue yeah, I use OneDrive and iCloud for real time backups so I don’t have to think about these things.
@sotneStatue I'm worried that this will fall by the wayside as kids lean further into cloud storage, streaming and digital "ownership" of content.
@sotneStatue I wish to propose a stipulation: the entire backup procedure must take less then 40 minutes total, in order for you to even so much as mention the specific method to your family.
Backup procedures taking longer that are fine - you just aren't allowed to mention/explain them to the others, as they are too cumbersome for group consideration.
@sotneStatue That's just Sunday in my studio.
@sotneStatue Quite frankly, it would need to make that at least a two day holiday, preferably a week...
@sotneStatue The day before Thanksgiving is my unofficial, "Hassle everyone I know to buy a fire extinguisher or check the expiration date on the one they already own" day.
@sotneStatue I have a Backup Day every hour, plus every time I press Save. I’m THAT scared.
@sotneStatue
Depending by how old they are the stories would change a lot, like if they're in the age when they start getting off you can say shit like "And so I lost 10 giga worth of my favorite NSFW content."
That might be based on a true story
@sotneStatue
We don't want to give the kids life altering, future therapy seeking level nightmares. Maybe just tales of close calls: "if not by luck and the USB drive I forgot about in the closet" type stories.
@sotneStatue backup day is every day in this household, ever since i jerry-rigged together a "cloud storage" replacement that works by running backup and restore operations to a NAS!

@sotneStatue
*Holds up torch under chin*

"...but the Kolektiva admin hadn't encrypted!! WoooOoooooOOOOO!"

@sotneStatue
At the end of the day you have a family dinner, and everyone gives a backup disk to a beloved (read: "trusted") family-member / friend.
@sotneStatue
corollary holiday where you get to plug in any flash drives you have found around or forgotten what was on them and the malware is not allowed to run

@sotneStatue fund it, fund the marketing for it, and remember

"If it doesn't exist in at least 3 completely separate places, it doesn't exist."

@sotneStatue My backup day is the day after I file my tax return. Every year.
@sotneStatue Annual “Reset my Mom’s iCloud Password” Day.
@sotneStatue 31st of March. I think it started as a marketing campaign
@sotneStatue … presumably followed immediately by “International Backblaze Has A Massive Outage Day”?
@sotneStatue we actually have a world backup day. https://www.worldbackupday.com/en/
World Backup Day

Be prepared against data loss and data theft. March 31st is the day to backup and better protect your data.

World Backup Day

@sotneStatue i got a scary story right here:

"the internet archive fucking dies. the end."

@sotneStatue Ah, let me tell you about the great blackout of 2011, or 'why there are no photos of you as a baby'.....
@sotneStatue
That sounds like a very good idea.
The day I lost over 1000 photos, even though I had backed them up the previous day (the moral: have more than 1 backup)
@sotneStatue agree with this and yea, everyone has a story like that ^^

@sotneStatue I'd suggest Digital Ownership Day, because nowadays everything is in the cloud (or automatically backed up in the cloud), so kids don't know what data loss is.

Rather, it would be terrifying if they learn that "buying digital content" means "having a temporary license to digital content." Only a handful of exceptions lets you actually buy and own digital content.

@sotneStatue That's a great idea! And those of us who think that they've already got all of that figured out instead test their backups and THEN make sure everything is really backed up.
@sotneStatue Oh yes, I lost my entire line fractal project. Accidentally deleted it and then realized my backup hard drive was broken...
@sotneStatue as they used to say, there are only 2 types of computer users, those that had a harddisk crash and those that will have it.
My very first harddisk failed back in 1990.
It was the very first day we took our very first computer (a HP260 mini) in production at my family business.
I have been taking backups daily on 3 different media every office day since then.
@sotneStatue I have an alternative. It's called "Start Fresh Day", every year we all get together, delete all of our data and start again. 😜

@sotneStatue Could we have a Backup Day followed by a Recovery Day 40 days after?

The time in between could be this special time of the year when people rethink their data usage in quiet. No internet access after sunset. People meeting with family and friends or in special groups to cleanse their IT infrastructure.
This phase culminates in Recovery Day when everything is restored nice and fresh.

@sotneStatue And people trade presents like physical photo albums and handwritten letters like the old days
@sotneStatue I can see @jadolg doing this with his family.

@sotneStatue

For the last couple of decades I have proposed something similar: Cold Start Day.

At 9:00 /everything/ is turned off, powerplants, water supply, sewage pumps, *everything*.

At 11:00 We start it all again from cold.

Just to make sure we can.

@sotneStatue @fosstodon Based on typical behavior I figured Backup Day must have been on February 29...

@sotneStatue September is also #SaveYourPhotosMonth for anyone interested in preserving your physical and digital photo collections.

World Backup Day

@sotneStatue @fosstodon

And if we lose March 31st, April 1st is Backup Backup Day.

@sotneStatue @fosstodon the joke is that March 31st isn't a real day
@sotneStatue I totally agree, but we'd also need a restore day
@sotneStatue @fosstodon omg. You’ve made me realise I have forgotten my scary data losses.
@sotneStatue tech literacy is so important in aging communities (like my mother lol). this would be great.
@sotneStatue cron is your friend. On my computers every day is backup day. I don’t need the scary stories. I have experienced them.
@sotneStatue @exmaahal How about on the date when the library of Alexandria burnt

@sotneStatue

Safe deposit boxes are germain.

@T

@sotneStatue
I'm in.
Except, the very first one will have be Backup Week.

I'm not saying it's been a while.
But it's been a while.

@sotneStatue @fosstodon I’d say an extra day is required for people to actually organize their important files aswell
@sotneStatue @fosstodon Followed by the more thrilling Restore Day
