Pet peeve: I don’t like when media outlets do this. CNBC *KNOWINGLY* messaged a defunct email address at Twitter that they KNOW is programmed to respond with this emoji (and has been for 8 months).

Just email Musk directly for comment. We all have his contact info. It’s such a farce to email a dead email acct you KNOW will return this emoji then act like it’s some sacrilege and write it up in this way.

I feel like it feeds into exactly what Musk and his idiot fanboys want which is to troll the meeia. Journalists, stop doing it!
@taylorlorenz It's never been tested - and probably won't be, Twitter would have to lodge a complaint.
But under South African media regulations we are required to attempt to contact the company through its chosen formal mechanism, and to report its response.
Even if it is automated, even if we know it is trolling, the rules in place to protect not-crazy subjects of reporting still apply.
@phillipdewet @taylorlorenz It makes inherent sense that "publication X did not contact our press department for comment" would be a standard defense for any unfavorable news story.

@wogan @taylorlorenz It's an almost zero-cost, no-risk way to force an apology. Best way to undermine a story.

If they're really lucky the publication digs in its heels, and then it becomes a whole messy fight that comes to obscure the original report entirely.

@phillipdewet @taylorlorenz And that is 100% the sort of outcome Elon (in particular) would love - being able to hit a publication with a vexatious lawsuit because they didn't stoop to his childish games.
@phillipdewet Privileged access to officials is Western journalism's whole shtick. It's among the reasons the media is such a mess - they want to allow the guy the opportunity to give his personal spin, not simply offer the opportunity, get the emoji, and then go ahead and publish if your story is strong enough.

@OutOnTheMoors Philosophically, I like rules that require us to bend over backwards to include comment from the subject of critical reporting – even if that gives bad people too much airtime.

Practically, I have often appreciated – mostly in hindsight – being forced to do so.

It's easy to get lost in the hunt, to convince yourself that people are evil, to caricature.

That serves nobody, Even a straight-up hit piece is stronger for nuance.

@phillipdewet Agreed. But Musk IS being given the right to respond. The poop emoji is "no comment - unless you kiss my arse".
Lots of reporters playing along being Twitter gossip celebs with a side-hustle in journalism.
(I worked in SA news media for 35+ years and saw the syndrome.)
@taylorlorenz they used the official media address... If media wants to reach out to a company, then thats the way to go
@taylorlorenz there are a lot of rules and laws to follow.
Stopping to following them is dangerous not despite Twitter ignoring them, but especially because they are ignoring them. They will use any chance to hit back over their legal department

@taylorlorenz

The media, in this case, did it on purpose specifically so they could write this tweet. Most journalists are absolute garbage and want clicks more than getting at the truth.

I guarantee you, CNBC will do this again and pretend it's the first time.

@taylorlorenz given the prevalence of certain things I see on CNBC, it makes sense that they would purposefully do this to show that mHUSK is on “the correct side of the debate”. Maybe I’m seeing conspiracy where there is none, but there’s a non-zero chance someone at CNBC is a big fan of his
@taylorlorenz oh wow. The BBC also always add in a line about getting the poop emoji in response. I, wrongly, assumed they’d done due diligence on that.
@taylorlorenz a serious company would never have started responding to media this way in the first place, and certainly would not continue to do so. Sure this is what #musk wants, but I think it is also worthwhile for the media to continue to remind the world that #twitter is not a serious company and its CEO is a flake.

@taylorlorenz
Now what would be good reporting is for CNBC to track down the ex-Twitter comms person who set up the poop auto-reply.

What was the story there. How do they feel about Twitter now?

@taylorlorenz (1 of 2) Hi Taylor,

Considering Elon Musk’s latest reply to you via Twitter he doesn’t seem to be interested in real damage control when confronted for any of the Christ awful things he deliberately does and his penchant for hemmoraging massive amounts of money, not paying bills and complaining about the financial state of Twitter.

Luckily you are reporting on his incompetence with the power of a not easily silenced by money company, as Sam Biddle of Gawker was by Peter Thiel.

@taylorlorenz do they think that if it's in enough headlines he'll get embarrassed and make someone answer mail again?

@taylorlorenz (2 of 2) In many ways, considering how the emperors clothes have been ripped away from the facade that is Elon Musk, he absolutely deserves to have that auto response reported time and time again. His actual response would seem to be along those lines anyway, and it’s another indication of how awful he is.

Jimmy Kimmel is right: “it has been interesting, over the years, to watch you blossom from the electric car guy into a fully-formed piece of shit @elonmusk”(Twitter, 10/30/2022)

@taylorlorenz
Email Musk? Shouldn't journalists email the new CEO, Linda Yaccarino?

@taylorlorenz The only legitimate use of that e-mail address is a tailored interview. What are Musk's plans for Twitter? 💩 What does he think of the users who pay him a monthly fee for verification? 💩

After decades of arguing that it's sometimes OK to take someone out of context, and this golden opportunity is sitting right there.

@taylorlorenz This is way easier said than done, but it's time people stop giving him attention. I know it's hard when he's the head of multiple countries. To be fair, it's best to not give trolls any attention because they feed off it.

I think that if Twitter has an official channel for the press than it should be used to request for comments when the news regards the company and not the person specifically.

Yes, they could also try other contacts if they really want to try, but if Twitter knowingly chooses to keep the bot account than the effort to reach out for comments should come from them.

But it doesn’t deserve the highlight, it’d probably be better to just have a note that they reached for comments and were declined.

@taylorlorenz “Twitter responded with their usual non-response” is all they need to say. Then if Musk complains show the receipts.
@taylorlorenz CNBC is doing exactly what journalist should do, contacting a company’s communications or press department. I if they didn’t get a reply, they would mention that; if they got a 💩 as a reply, I think that is worth mentioning.

@mcelhearn @taylorlorenz In a saner world, this fact would be sufficient to condemn the sender of the emoji as juvenile and not worthy of being a "serious" multi-billion/million dollar company. There may still be people who read it that way.

Unfortunately, there are far too many people who probably see it as an amusing troll.

@taylorlorenz That doesn't make the programmed response any better. To set this up in the first place is ...
@taylorlorenz Additonally, he likes to post just this emoji in replies on his site, formerly known as #Twitter , so it's not wrong to make this a topic.
@taylorlorenz I go back and forth with this. On one hand, you're right about it, but on the other hand, if the regular process is to contact the media email the they should keep doing that. Don't give special treatment unless he's changed the process because he could have removed the email altogether.
Unless, of course, as someone else said, if emailing him directly is the route Twitter has chosen to give insightful responses, then that should be the correct path.
@taylorlorenz does Musk reply for comment when contacted directly?

@taylorlorenz cargo cult?

“Emulate the purported behavior of successful people

This is the key to the cargo cult. To enjoy the success of another, just mimic his rituals.”

(I’ amazed at how much that’s wrong or plainly useless in humanity can be explain with that single phrase)

@taylorlorenz why just tell the wrongs of what someone does when you can make shit up and add it to the pile?
@taylorlorenz So is Musk the only one left working at Twitter now?

@taylorlorenz anyone who responds to any email with a poop emoji is behaving like a spoiled child.

Civilised adults say things like "this email address is not in use please contact ...".

I support and applaud anyone who points this imbicilic behavior out everytime and i strongly encourage any remaining advertisers to rethink whether this is a company that represents their values cos it sure does not represent mine.

@Twiglet no one is responding with a poop emoji, it’s a bot. The email address is defunct and it only helps Elon to email a bot account rather than actually request comment. It’s frankly irresponsible journalism and lazy reporting

@taylorlorenz I know what it is. I am not stupid.

Someone at twitter has decided to let it send poop emojis. There is no law of nature forcing them to do that. It's a choice. A shitty disrespectful and arrogant choice that deserves to be called out until someone grows up or goes out of business.

The behaviour we ignore is the behaviour we accept.

@taylorlorenz Hi there, Taylor 👋 I wonder if taking Musk's 'distruptor, entrepreneurial' ethos may be the way for MSM to respond? Taking an old school, 'thinking out of the box, dynamic' Musk approach may make the point white tacitly reaching out for conciliation with him.

Given my line of thinking, what about sending him an actual jiffy bag with an actual poop in it?

There you go, you see, not all genius has to be attached to billionaires 😉

Take care, and all the best from the UK. Dave 👋

@taylorlorenz the only acceptable use of this is too email the account specifically using the phrasing that asks for comment on what the company thinks of 'latest Musk thing' and then running the headline 'Twitter says X is poop emoji' :P
