@Flominator @MishJHolman Thank you for the info/recommendations & work put into compiling these resources
@ziggy_southpaw Follow and boost are the keys to a happy Mastodon experience. Welcome!
@ziggy_southpaw are you aware that you can follow hashtags? If you just put exactly those hashtags in your feed, you will get a boatload of Toots. And than you can decide whats for you. I find this more relaxing than just following people.
@Taunide Thanks for the tip - I’ve started to follow some

@ziggy_southpaw

Follow the @feditips feed.

If you have a question, post it with the HashTags #Help #Question

Follow HashTags to get posts on subjects that interest you.

Example - search on "Geneology"

Click on the HashTag tab, click on a hashtag.

Cick on the "+" on the human icon to follow that hashtag.

Put HashTags in your posts so people with those interests can find your posts. Capitalize the first letter of each word in the hashtag so blind people can find your posts too. Example: #FamilyTree

Use the link for your Local server to see only what people on your server posted.

If you have an "#Explore" link that will get you posts people on your server thought were interesting.

NEVER open a post marked "Sensitive Content". People who mark their content that way do NOT play around.

Enjoy!

@beforewisdom @feditips Great tips - thanks so much

I think that about sums it up.
@ziggy_southpaw Hello Zig! I am in SE Pennsylvania. #Philadelphia was the mixing pot for my great grandparents, in the late 19th century: #German #Irish #Scots #Ashkenazi.
@glassnet Very cool - I am as well. Most of my paternal branches have been in MontCo since at least the late 18th/early 19th century.
@ziggy_southpaw My surname is German, coming here around 1850, from Altensteig, Wurttemberg. One son married into a branch of Lancaster County families that came over 1700.
@glassnet Kannst du Micka Fange?
@ziggy_southpaw I actually found that phrase just now on Reddit. I was thinking from the Pennsylvania Dutch, and there ya go. The original families I speak of were Leitner, Rutter, Jacoby, and so on. They were Methodists, for the most part.
@glassnet To be fair, that’s one of the like 3 phrases I know lol. Handful of words and phrases definitely passed down to me though - never thought anything of it until someone had no clue what I meant. Ziegler, Schwenk, Bucher, Bechtel over on my end
@ziggy_southpaw I have Bucher descendants in the tree.
Found relation #1:
Bucher, John Conrad
husband of Jacoby, Isabella Matilda [third cousin four times removed (up)]
child of Jacoby, Samuel [second cousin five times removed (up)]
@glassnet Reminds me to go back and build this Bucher branch out more. I’ve seen records for that John Conrad, but haven’t found a connection yet. Until then - my 5th great grandparents were Sebastian Bucher & Lydia Rhoads
@ziggy_southpaw The John Conrad I mentioned had two sons named John Conrad. Both died very young.
@ziggy_southpaw @mguhlin Welcome! Hope your stay is good! It’s a whole new world compared to what we’re all used to with federation and all that but it’s certainly got a lot of positives and a nice community feel as a result.
@ziggy_southpaw welcome! I’m glad you’ve gotten so much good advice in your replies :) Boost things that you think others wouldn’t want to miss seeing.
