This might help explain the spectacular launch of Threads

#Tech #technology #socialmedia #meta #instagram #Threads

@Some_Emo_Chick
It's Google+ all over again 😬
@darkandandstormy @Some_Emo_Chick but G+ had a surprisingly good community. Probably because most people didn't want to use it :)
@Some_Emo_Chick Well this is fascinating...
@Some_Emo_Chick Instagram and Threads are the same account. Same username, same ID. You can choose to follow accounts even if they haven't enabled Threads yet. The follow requests are from Instagram followers of that account that signed up earlier and selected to follow the account.
@Some_Emo_Chick
Using tricks to increase the number of users? Unheard of
@Some_Emo_Chick So the Europeans are all already on threads without even knowing it! So great, and here they thought they would miss out
@bookstardust @Some_Emo_Chick oh! Interesting thoughts! So they might break EU Lawa already without even offering the App itself here.
@bookstardust @Some_Emo_Chick that has got to violate GDPR _somehow_
@resurrexia @Some_Emo_Chick yes probs, because we weren't ask if that was okay.

@bookstardust @resurrexia @Some_Emo_Chick

Or they did ask and everyone already agreed.

Reminds me of that rubbish BlackMirror episode with Salma Hayek.

@Some_Emo_Chick

But the same applies to Mastodon.
Because on Mastodon there are also placeholder accounts from Twitter accounts that actually don't use Mastodon at all.
And while I understand that Threads is doing it because it is just an additional App for the Instagramaccount people are already created, I don‘t think Mastodon should do that because Mastodon and Twitter are 2 very different apps and are not connected.

@morphany

If a twitter user creates an account on Mastodon but doesn't use it that's one thing. But that's not done on Mastodon for a user without the users knowledge.

@Some_Emo_Chick

@morphany @Some_Emo_Chick

I've not heard of Mastodon doing this. Which servers?

@morphany @Some_Emo_Chick
Mastodon doesn’t automatically create those twitter linked accounts, a Mastodon user has to manually create it. That’s a big difference

@SNerd @Some_Emo_Chick

So you mean these accounts were made up by a real person and not created by Mastodon?
Well, then Mastodon should take actions against those accounts because it is absolutely annoying when someone comes from Twitter and find its own Twitteraccounts being copied.

@morphany @SNerd

What makes you say Mastodon did it? My first thought is spammers copying accounts. Just report them and have them removed.

@morphany @Some_Emo_Chick 😲. I was talking about those twitter mirror accounts. I don’t know how those duplicates of yours were made

@morphany @SNerd @Some_Emo_Chick there is no 'Mastodon' that should do anything - you'll need to report them to the admins of the servers they're on, sorry...

(edited to remove the errant apostrophe my phone put in)

@morphany @SNerd @Some_Emo_Chick Those are probably from Bridges, there is no chance they’ll ever do anything but relay what happens on the birdsite, if you visit their address you find that they are not running mastodon at all and probably get a more detailed explanation of what they are doing.

What Facebook is doing is a shared account base and they are probably making it not very easy to distinguish accounts that have signed up from those that have not. They could just have built this into Instagram and done. The only reason this is a separate app is marketing.

@morphany in this case it sounds like you need to report these accounts to get them deal with then.

@morphany @SNerd @Some_Emo_Chick It's a safe assumption that Mastodon the nonprofit organization did not set up those phony accounts.

Much more likely is some scammers scraped Twitter and set up phony accounts on various servers. You can and should report those fake accounts to the server admins.

@morphany @Some_Emo_Chick On #Threads, #Meta is intentionally creating accounts to boost user numbers and goad people into being here.

On #Mastodon, fans of #Twitter accounts that haven't migrated yet have set up bots to toot out content from those accounts.

One is corporate capitalist greed, the other is, typically, just a fan.

@Some_Emo_Chick Yeah, 70 million never sounded real. Truth is never enough for them.

Be the best, even if you have to lie for the weak ego facade!

@Some_Emo_Chick just "deleted" my insta account. It'll take a month 🙄

netzpolitik.org
@wbs_legal Any chance to get 1000€ from Meta as a individual in case they created a shadow account without asking?
@derberg @Some_Emo_Chick Not launched in the EU. The link between Threads and Instagram might be the reason, but it could be something else.

@Some_Emo_Chick

Facebook has always employed industrial psychology and social engineering to manipulate.

@Npars01 @Some_Emo_Chick

Every corporation that interfaces with the public for profit, including simply manufacturing products, has been employing psychologists for generations. They advise on product design, advertising strategy, customer service, "damage control", and many other facets. The psychologists employed in this fashion are mercenaries to dictators with one selfish goal, and should be treated as such.

@VulcanTourist @Npars01 @Some_Emo_Chick

I think I know where you were going with that and it was maybe "This is why we all hate the people from Marketing".

No. Marketing are wonderful and fluffy and stuff. Although they do get a tiny bit up themselves now and again.

No, it's those bastards in Sales that keep going "What? Yeah of course we can do that" without actually bothering to ask a clever person if it might be feasible. Fuck those twats.

@bytebro @Npars01 @Some_Emo_Chick

People in both those roles are cut from the same cloth: they're manipulators of perception for selfish gain (in this instance their selfish gain is trickle-down from an even more selfish boss(es).

I have no respect for either of those occupations. "Skill at manipulation" is not something I'd want on my resume. I lump them in with lawyers and politicians.

@Some_Emo_Chick
Next Twitter can create shadow accounts for those Threads shadow accounts and then Threads create shadow accounts for those Twitter shadow accounts and so on until our power system collapses under the stress
@Some_Emo_Chick ????

There is no shadow accounts. The millions of users are real there is no point in denying reality.

The suggestions of follows do include Instagram users who do not have Threads yet. But it's clearly showed not as a follow or a shadow account but as "waiting". And we know the social graph carry on from Instagram to Threads, it's not a secret.

1/3 of my instagram follows are already on Threads I still have more in "waiting" status, the 70M users are real.

@Some_Emo_Chick I'm really annoyed about this.

I'd delete #Instagram if I could, but I need it to view ever-changing menus at local cafes.

They don't post them anywhere else and I have suspected #ARFID.

So if I delete it, I'll just never be able to go to any local places.

#Threads #Meta

@AutieScot @Some_Emo_Chick You can view Instagram images via the web without an account. The main difference is that if you try to view too many or scroll to much it will then block you and offer to sign you up.

Closing the web page and opening another one gets you another quota of images (or at least it does for me).

@Some_Emo_Chick
I try to check the original account (as supposed should be https://mewsie.social/@h_tejas @[email protected] but I only got error (tested just now)
how to check the source ?
@Some_Emo_Chick I'm just glad I never succumbed to the whole Meta cult, and ended my WhatsApp account as soon as they decided to mine my data
@Some_Emo_Chick Whaaaa? this whole thing is getting more and more ridiculous, Zuck is making a total fool of himself! I was already shocked to read that you can't delete your Threads account without deleting your IG account but this is ten times worse. Sooo manipulative and desperate! 😡
@Some_Emo_Chick those letters suffer from anorexia
@Some_Emo_Chick they are transparent about this using IG accounts, and even prompt you to just follow all the same people when you first use it. This seems completely fine and above board, not sure what about this is surprising or alarming to folks.

@Some_Emo_Chick
They really should play a booming ominous voice-line once you sign up for #Threads:

"We are the #Meta. You will be #assimilated. Your #Instagram account and all you #personaldata will be added to our own. #ResistanceIsFutile."

@Some_Emo_Chick this isn't the first story I've heard like this. I never did sign up for Threads, and these stories made me delete my ig accounts.

@Some_Emo_Chick

The main thing that's aggravating about this is that millions of people will only ever see "a spectacular launch of Threads!!".

That's marketing for you...

@Some_Emo_Chick That's THE key factor. Zero friction to establishing your social graph on the new platform. None of the other Twitter refugee sites have the ability to make it so easy. As soon as anyone I follow on Instagram signs onto Threads we're connected.
@Some_Emo_Chick @steve I thought it was generally understood that all Instagram accounts were queued for Threads accounts. Threads is a subsidiary Instagram service.
@Some_Emo_Chick is it also automatically creating FB accounts? Because I feel like I'm seeing a lot of "new to facebook" under suggested friends lately
@Some_Emo_Chick I feel violated to the absolute core
@Some_Emo_Chick AKA “Flood the Zone with Shit”
@Some_Emo_Chick This also explains (to me anyway) why I've been dragging my heels at getting an Instagram account. I got a Tiktok one and I'm wondering if I should delete that? I hate being manipulated by billionaires.

@Some_Emo_Chick

The stocks scammer that stole my Instagram account must have an account on Threads then 😂
