This might help explain the spectacular launch of Threads
@bookstardust @resurrexia @Some_Emo_Chick
Or they did ask and everyone already agreed.
Reminds me of that rubbish BlackMirror episode with Salma Hayek.
But the same applies to Mastodon.
Because on Mastodon there are also placeholder accounts from Twitter accounts that actually don't use Mastodon at all.
And while I understand that Threads is doing it because it is just an additional App for the Instagramaccount people are already created, I don‘t think Mastodon should do that because Mastodon and Twitter are 2 very different apps and are not connected.
If a twitter user creates an account on Mastodon but doesn't use it that's one thing. But that's not done on Mastodon for a user without the users knowledge.
I've not heard of Mastodon doing this. Which servers?
So you mean these accounts were made up by a real person and not created by Mastodon?
Well, then Mastodon should take actions against those accounts because it is absolutely annoying when someone comes from Twitter and find its own Twitteraccounts being copied.
@morphany @SNerd @Some_Emo_Chick there is no 'Mastodon' that should do anything - you'll need to report them to the admins of the servers they're on, sorry...
(edited to remove the errant apostrophe my phone put in)
@morphany @SNerd @Some_Emo_Chick Those are probably from Bridges, there is no chance they’ll ever do anything but relay what happens on the birdsite, if you visit their address you find that they are not running mastodon at all and probably get a more detailed explanation of what they are doing.
What Facebook is doing is a shared account base and they are probably making it not very easy to distinguish accounts that have signed up from those that have not. They could just have built this into Instagram and done. The only reason this is a separate app is marketing.
@morphany @SNerd @Some_Emo_Chick It's a safe assumption that Mastodon the nonprofit organization did not set up those phony accounts.
Much more likely is some scammers scraped Twitter and set up phony accounts on various servers. You can and should report those fake accounts to the server admins.
@morphany @Some_Emo_Chick On #Threads, #Meta is intentionally creating accounts to boost user numbers and goad people into being here.
On #Mastodon, fans of #Twitter accounts that haven't migrated yet have set up bots to toot out content from those accounts.
One is corporate capitalist greed, the other is, typically, just a fan.
@Some_Emo_Chick Yeah, 70 million never sounded real. Truth is never enough for them.
Be the best, even if you have to lie for the weak ego facade!
Facebook has always employed industrial psychology and social engineering to manipulate.
Every corporation that interfaces with the public for profit, including simply manufacturing products, has been employing psychologists for generations. They advise on product design, advertising strategy, customer service, "damage control", and many other facets. The psychologists employed in this fashion are mercenaries to dictators with one selfish goal, and should be treated as such.
@VulcanTourist @Npars01 @Some_Emo_Chick
I think I know where you were going with that and it was maybe "This is why we all hate the people from Marketing".
No. Marketing are wonderful and fluffy and stuff. Although they do get a tiny bit up themselves now and again.
No, it's those bastards in Sales that keep going "What? Yeah of course we can do that" without actually bothering to ask a clever person if it might be feasible. Fuck those twats.
@bytebro @Npars01 @Some_Emo_Chick
People in both those roles are cut from the same cloth: they're manipulators of perception for selfish gain (in this instance their selfish gain is trickle-down from an even more selfish boss(es).
I have no respect for either of those occupations. "Skill at manipulation" is not something I'd want on my resume. I lump them in with lawyers and politicians.
@Some_Emo_Chick I'm really annoyed about this.
I'd delete #Instagram if I could, but I need it to view ever-changing menus at local cafes.
They don't post them anywhere else and I have suspected #ARFID.
So if I delete it, I'll just never be able to go to any local places.
@AutieScot @Some_Emo_Chick You can view Instagram images via the web without an account. The main difference is that if you try to view too many or scroll to much it will then block you and offer to sign you up.
Closing the web page and opening another one gets you another quota of images (or at least it does for me).
@Some_Emo_Chick
They really should play a booming ominous voice-line once you sign up for #Threads:
"We are the #Meta. You will be #assimilated. Your #Instagram account and all you #personaldata will be added to our own. #ResistanceIsFutile."
The main thing that's aggravating about this is that millions of people will only ever see "a spectacular launch of Threads!!".
That's marketing for you...
The stocks scammer that stole my Instagram account must have an account on Threads then 😂
