Florida is getting real scary real fast. They will now allow death penalty sentences with an 8-4 jury vote instead of unanimous, they’ve passed a bill to make sex crimes against children punishable by death, and they’re working to make being trans near children a sex crime. For all the “it could never happen here” folks, we’re inching closer to state sanctioned mass murder all the time.

@danirabbit To be fair, though, I can't exactly sympathize with the pedoes - though I'd still prefer some sort of neuroscientific-based and possibly higher-tech treatment to be developed instead of a death penalty. The problem, of course, is that it doesn't stop there, as you've said.

There are no actual pedophiles targeted by this bill. The pedophilia that the bill purports to face is entirely a fabrication by right wing actors rationalizing these laws. The way you can tell is simple:

If right wing actors actually cared *at all* about pedophilia, they wouldn't have allowed people like Matt Gaetz, Jim Jordan, and Donald Trump into the party in the first place, moreover their live and let live response to pedophilia in the church.

If you have the death penalty for child sexual abuse that doesn't involve murder, then abusers will kill the victim to negate the primary witness. This will result in an increase in child murder.

Yeah, I have no idea what it'd look like, but definitely not that. :)

Maybe somehow it diminishes the feeling of sexual attraction to children enough that it's easy to ignore/control it, is what I'd be thinking.

(So it's not necessarily out-and-out forcing some sort of hegemonic "normalcy" concept on them either, just making it so that it's easier not to victimize people esp. when coupled with psychotherapy, incentives, or the like.)

If you ever wondered what you would do if you lived in Germany during the start of their genocides, well what are you doing now?

Vote against this, find trans support groups and give them the money to keep people alive, at the very least show that you stand with trans people when the Republicans aren't trying to hide their goals anymore.

@danirabbit i am not in any way trying to detract from this or change the subject, but in all honesty, i have seen plenty of non-white trans people expressing frustration with us when we frame these current events as the “start” of state violence against trans people. why are things like the massacre of wounded knee or the MOVE bombing not counting as “state sanctioned mass murder”? these are things our Black&/Native trans cousins have been dealing with for 100s of yrs already.

I've just read this and he's right, but also seems to assume that Americans are sleepwalking into it.

I am in a group with many US mothers and expectant mothers. They are very aware, and terrified. They die a little inside every day, scared of just taking their children to school in case that day is the day a shooter comes. Their young children go through active shooter drills.

They worry something might happen to their pregnancy, and they won't be able to access care.

Really, the people do need to rise up - but because of how little free time they have, how easily they can get fired, and how their healthcare largely depends on their jobs - most of them just can't risk it.

And, there are guns everywhere. Can you imagine considering going on a leftist protest in the US - the likelihood of a deranged republican with an automatic weapon turning up is so high!

by norms I mean, a healthy social safety net, good #medical care for all, #education system that give everyone a chance to improve, access to reality based news and information, safe housing, progressive tax system.

Despite reports as hate speech and threats of violence, these posts persist and not taken down due to automation and no real humans checking them. So for people thinking this is only limited to transgender people, this is just the start. Another legislative move in Florida this week—anyone who knows anyone that ever came over by boat… which is a significant demographic in south Florida.

@danirabbit Even #ClarenceThomas signed the Ramos decision requiring jury unanimity. (And he also signed Hurst, which required Florida to sentence people to death by the jury, not the judge.)

Is Justice Thomas too "woke" for Florida now? We'll see. (and for other laws, well... I hope by the time reaches the Supreme Court, it has more people with respect for civil rights.)
