THE MAN IN THE RIVER

Once there was a wise man, who travelled to strange lands, and as he travelled, he came to the bank of a winding river. Edging the bank were houses, set at distances from one another here and there. The wise man walked upstream, watching the slow current carry leaves and twigs past him.

In time, the wise man came upon a man who sat in a chair in front of his small house.

As a brief interlude in a series on the national current, a parable of a wise man

The Reframe

“This is why I’ve learned not to explain these matters to anyone except fools,” the man in the chair said, and he closed his eyes. “What you have told me is the exact same thing I hear—phrase for phrase—from most wise men who come by, particularly if their wisdom has led them to prefer to trust only to what they can see for themselves.”

I have a lot of respect for child actors who have to read crappy dialogue about playing computer games.

This post brought to you by an episode of NCIS where some poor kid had to talk about "playing Xbox" while very clearly holding a Nintendo Wii controller.

This is the most succinct summary of modern life in Britain I have ever seen.
HYPOTHESIS: There's an anecdote that the Steves Jobs and Woz dropped acid then went to see 2001: A Space Odyssey when it came out. I think Jobs spent the rest of his life trying to re-create the monolith he'd seen on his trip: a featureless black slab of magic that upgrades the brains of hominids who are exposed to it. Note the way the original Mac 128K and the first iPad with keyboard dock share the same proportions when viewed from in front, the way the iPhone is the size of a flint hand-axe …
Being human is hard, especially if you need to do stuff with computers 😂 trade wisely. The grass is always greener on the other side. Credit:

This is probably the best thing I ever posted on Twitter. The memory is pretty dear to me; I'm sharing it here so it still exists somewhere if that place collapses.
