So Jason Gilbert has Threads absolutely nailed.

Facebook's Threads is so depressing

@ct_bergstrom So, if How Do You Do Fellow Kids was an app?

@ct_bergstrom

I just barked out a staccato burst of laughter while reading this on the bus, and got a sly side eye smile from the woman sitting across from me.

@mckra1g @ct_bergstrom that’s one of the best graphs I’ve read in a long time.
@jinscho @mckra1g @ct_bergstrom Except, crap, now I guess I hate Ellen.
@mckra1g @ct_bergstrom That's brilliant Molly, where did you find it?
@mckra1g @ct_bergstrom @cstross I barely understood a word of that, and feel better for it 😂

@mckra1g @ct_bergstrom @severedaffect

you're getting more out of it than I did for sure

@mckra1g @ct_bergstrom the vibe i'm getting about the vibes is that it's also as if the richest 39-year-old boy in the world paid many, many celebrities to show up at his birthday party.

so it's also reminding me of Succession s3e7, _Too Much Birthday_:

Too Much Birthday - Wikipedia

@ct_bergstrom Jesus some of the posts he's grabbed to include there. You may think you know cringe. That's a whole other level.
@ct_bergstrom
It's a place that will insist on keeping the 's' in "Threadsfluencer."

@ct_bergstrom

is it me or does Jason Gilbert's "Substack" feels like "Blogger" getting high with "Tumblr" on "Patreon" ?

@ct_bergstrom Can't quite see the business niche there. 🤭

@ct_bergstrom

How about it actually being like FB prying on steroids? It requires a portable device and demands access to everything. Given FB's history, do you want to let them access everything you do on your cell phone?

@bruce_korb
Thing that fascinates me is that it's actually difficult to even READ it on the web. There's no web-based access point - you have to have a link to a profile or a post, you can't just go to threads dot net & browse. It's wild to me how overtly hostile that is to the very idea of the web.
@ct_bergstrom

@ct_bergstrom
And this is the best Threads will ever be

These are the early days when they need to attract customers. Like the early days of dating when they're on their best behaviour. Before you realize they are controlling, have a drinking problem, lie and steal from you.

Only Zuckerberg wants to imprison you in his walled garden, has a disinfo problem, lies about his policies and steals your data.

@ct_bergstrom
SPOILER ALERT: It feels like casual Friday on linkedin.🤣
@ct_bergstrom Heavy "the living will envy the dead" vibes with this.
@ct_bergstrom Haven’t tried tried Threads and have zero desire to do so, yet these sentiments sound spot on.
@ct_bergstrom Well, that settles it. I am *never* getting a Threads account.
@ct_bergstrom If LinkedIn is the conference, threads reads like the giggly shuttle tour to the conference…

@ct_bergstrom scathing 🤣

"Elon Musk promptly ruining Twitter so badly that any alternative looks palatable, even one run by Mark “My other platform enabled a literal genocide” Zuckerberg"

@michaelsmith2nd @ct_bergstrom Zuck is proud of that - it's called *engagement*.

@ct_bergstrom Oh, I love the idea of a comfortable mom & pop eatery being duplicated... and all the meals are replaced by Big Macs, and everyone that works there has the same personality of cardboard, is underpaid, over worked, abused by asshole customers, and they want me to wear a suit & tie just to go through the doors.

Yay!

@moving_target01 @ct_bergstrom

Reminds me of the "virtual cafe" scam, where someone puts up a fake website to intercept GrubHub & Doordash orders for a local restaurant & then marks them up.

@FeralRobots @ct_bergstrom Profit over all, right?
@moving_target01
For a disturbingly large portion of people, the more they feel like they're taking advantage of someone with their business model, the more they like it.
@ct_bergstrom
@ct_bergstrom "Casual Friday on LinkedIn" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Seiðr (@[email protected])

"Threads, like Facebook, is for users who probably wouldn’t have used Twitter anyway." Well, that's a summary if ever there was one. https://techcrunch.com/2023/07/06/you-cant-post-ass-threads-is-doomed-meta-instagram-twitter/?guccounter=1

Mastodon 🐘

@ct_bergstrom He went with "zuck" as his handle?

Wow. That really zucks.

@ct_bergstrom The most disappointing thing about Threads is that it’s more than good enough for the overwhelming majority of internet users. All the garbage attributes Gilbert (accurately) pointed out will simply make no difference to most people.

And that’s perfectly ok in federated social media - that’s how it was designed.

@Dogzilla
Except it's not federated & we don't have a clear idea of when or honestly if it ever will be. Or how long that will last if it ever is. (<koff>Messenger!</koff> <koff>XMPP!</koff>)
@ct_bergstrom
@FeralRobots @ct_bergstrom Fair enough - if/when it’s federated we can block or allow it. If it never gets federated it’s not really our problem

@ct_bergstrom apple had exactly the same vibe with their iPolygraph Pro thing.

“120” spreadsheetn without the TV frame

Ditto for Google. It’s getting worse every year.

@ct_bergstrom they're all good but casual Friday on LinkedIn is just 🎯
@ct_bergstrom I'm not sure what "Casual Friday on LinkedIn" is, but just trying to imagine will probably induce some nightmares.
@ct_bergstrom Disagree with the first entry. Facebook was never a local restaurant I enjoyed.
