The best advice I got about Mastodon is that it’s for things you love, not hate
@neilk
Yes! The changes elsewhere drove me to crank up the... reciprocation.
@neilk this is brilliant! Thanks.
@neilk This is very true. I lost sleep in that other place, I was so angry all the time.

@neilk I have already seen political discussions here that lean towards Twitter like mocking.

Immediately mute on them.

@kypeli @neilk I've definitely found myself unfollowing people who are negative in a way that seemed totally normal on twitter. Enjoying having much more control over what ends up in my feed here.
@neilk
I agree. I am blocking anyone whose posts sound angry aggressive or bitter.
@neilk That’s great. Also showing what’s wrong with Twitter etc. (But yeah I think it’s because of the algorithms there, which just see, you react and interact with things, and not whether you found it pleasant or not. Here we just share what we like and that’s what goes around then. (Ok plus maybe better moderation.))

@neilk
Yeah, I've blocked for tone and/or vibe, let alone actual content.

Of course, I heavily used assorted Twitter nukes/blocklists. I had hundreds blocked. Between that and using tweetdeck to force a chronological timeline with only who I followed, it was tolerable. Still happier here though.

@neilk But I love hating things????
@neilk That's the energy I always try to keep!
@neilk twitter is loved because it’s where you find the things you hate.
@neilk Yet half the toots are whines about Twitter, Musk, billionaires, etc. Folks not following that advice closely it seems
@neilk that's why hashtags about Twitter are always trending highly
@neilk this also works for time management in general
@neilk so THATS why i can't find anything interesting here. It's because i hate everything and this is not the place for that.
@Neurosarcoidosis is an autoimmune condition that causes "inflammation and abnormal cell deposits in any part of the nervous system—the brain, spinal cord, or peripheral nerves." "Symptoms of cranial neurosarcoidosis are varied and commonly include headache, ataxia, visual disturbances, fatigue, nausea and vomiting...weakness, sensory disturbances, seizures, cognitive dysfunction, eye pain, depression, aphasia, and tremor" (US NIH)
I've not seen any discussion of neurosarc here on Mastodon.
@neilk That's perfect, Neil - and your timing is equally so. Many of us are still on and dealing with other platforms in turmoil or being offered as alternatives and already showing early signs of the same toxicity. As I described it to someone today, this place radiates calm.
@neilk I, wholeheartedly agree with you. I wish others could get more onboard with this sentiment rather than constantly complaining about things they hate.
@neilk it's a corner pub instead of a casino bar
@neilk More love is a good thing, now and always

@neilk I guess that's why I'm here, because the foundation of morality is:

Always love. Teach to always love.
Never hate. Teach to never hate.

Righteous anger at the many injustices and cruelties of the world is NOT hate, but our darker potential does try to convince us to conflate the two.

@neilk
Hey #fediverse, what things do you love?

For me it's my wife, fountain pens, journals, travel (even if it's a one hour drive), satire, friends, New encounters, etc.

And what fun plans are in your future?

@neilk
At least so far, I'm really likin' the Big M. It's great not to have things shoved in my face all the time.
@neilk agree with you 100%, but I can’t seem to find any cookies to follow. And I’m not interested in the kind of cookies that follow me…
@neilk That should be written over the door, so we can point at it.
@neilk @briankrebs well said to whomever said it first.
