Advice for newcomers: don’t bother with the official Mastodon apps. Try these instead!

A nimble Mastodon web client

Interestingly, some of the replies I originally got for this post are now gone. Not visible in my replies or even notifications anymore. Stuff like this makes me a bit nervous trusting Mastodon to keep anything for longer than a week. (Not that Twitter was much better at it.)

Anyway… a bunch of the replies also recommended https://phanpy.social (web).

Phanpy

Minimalistic opinionated Mastodon web client

@jonikorpi some people set their posts to auto-delete after a period of time
@sinbad Ohh… that makes sense. I kind of hate it. But it makes sense.
@jonikorpi Mona for iOS is also great
@jonikorpi Thanks, I didn't know about Elk, it looks great!

@jonikorpi

Also TOOOT for android

@jonikorpi

Official Mastodon app for Android changed recently and is quite nice.

@jonikorpi went back to Tusky.

Having preview of message I am replying to is great.

@jonikorpi ivory also has a great app on macos.
@jonikorpi For the life of me, I can't get Ivory to log me in.
@jonikorpi personally I found Ice Cubes the best one for iOS.
Indeed: Ice cubes is great. Try adjusting the look and feel upon using it the first time for a more readable experience. @djlink @jonikorpi

Same
Ice cubes is based on SwiftUI so it’s much more smooth than other clients I’ve tried

@jonikorpi

Android has a bunch of options now, I have yet to settle on a daily driver

@jonikorpi The built-in web UI is actually pretty nice (check out multicolumn mode if that interests you!); it's just the supposedly ""official"" iOS/Android apps that suck!

We use Tusky for its multiaccount features, it works decent. On desktop we have cookie containers so we don't need a special client for that.

@topaz @jonikorpi it sucks more and more on every new release since 4.0 releases though, IMO (edit is the only good new feature)

@xarvos @jonikorpi ...yeppp.

We're sticking on 3. Someone should really fork 3. The edit UI is the only thing that needs to be backported – you can actually edit with other clients, even.

@topaz I used the official web UI for a while, but honestly it just isn’t up to the standards people coming from modern zillion dollar social media platforms are used to. It’s trying to do too much with too few resources.

@jonikorpi I'd disagree on recommending elk over the webui.

Elk doesn't have any separation between your feed, and the column of buttons on the left
