People boost the most random shit on here
oh you little shits
It’s funny how people who boosted early did it to troll me and the people replying after it’s been boosted a million times somehow think I was trying to get my post boosted 😂
But no, I was actually calling out how boost culture makes it so that I have to scroll through tons of context-less posts and try to make sense of them. It’s very tiring for someone who really just wants to catch up with friends.

Omg

- I know about lists, I don’t want to have to do work just so I can literally just use my feed

- you bet I already know how to turn off boosts for one person, but am I gonna do that for however many people I follow? Bananas

@shantini could you set your default feed to show just the posts & replies of people you’re following, then check in on boosts after that? Or never check the boosts too I guess haha
@jknlsn is that possible in any of the apps?!

@shantini I know it is in mine! Haha

I thought it was in others too honestly, but just checked and while you can filter in Ivory you can see just media and links, but not just replies and posts. Can't see options for it in Mammoth and Ice Cubes either, must've been mistaken. Here’s a screenshot of what I tend to use in my app Radiant, and if you want to try it out the beta has a lot of fixes that haven’t made it to the App Store just yet so can check it out here

@jknlsn this is awesome, thanks!!!
@shantini No problem! Always happy to get feedback if you end up giving it a try 😊
@jknlsn I just tried that feature and it works great, I like how the timeline is updated right away!
@jknlsn is there a way to pin my profile as one of the tab bar items?

@shantini Not currently, it's always a tap away in Settings at the moment.

Not sure about as a tab item immediately, but I could make your profile accessible from the account switcher in the top left pretty quickly I think! 🤔

@jknlsn that might be good!
@shantini @jknlsn You can do this in @MonaApp too, a great app for customization as well.
@shantini @jknlsn yeah, with Trunks (ios, android, web). At the top of your home feed, you can toggle between comments, replies and boosts, and the feed automatically shows only the stuff youve selected.

I actually use it quite a bit to only browse boosts. First read the feed with only the posts (not even comments) of people I follow, because thats what I want to pay attention to. Then when I'm bored or paying half attention during tv or something I switch to only boosts. People boost the most random shit on here, so its always a bit of a rollercoaster when youre scrolling via 'only boosts', but kind of fun
@shantini I’ve been using phanpy.social - a web client for mastodon. It groups boosts into a “boost carousel” so if you aren’t feeling like catching up on boosts you can just scroll on by and they only take up one posts worth of space.
@shantini yep, implicit list and boost workflows should be part of clients by now and I'm always surprised these newer clients aren't experimenting more with taking that work off the end-user
@shantini Mona has an option to filter out boosts on your feed. I use it when I’m trying to catch up quickly, but you can leave it on all the time.

@shantini I've made a request on GitHub to allow us to create lists/feeds built into the timeline. So maybe we can put ppl that boost a lot in one feed and name it "spam" 🤓

I'm hoping something like that gets implemented.

Timeline lists/categories · Issue #16908 · mastodon/mastodon

Pitch A key feature missing from Mastodon is the ability to better manage our timelines. While I appreciate that the timeline is chronological, it would be useful to better sort through our feed. L...

GitHub
@shantini since you are using Ivory: click the magnifying glass in top right. Click the filter button. Add a new filter. Make a rule for no boosts. Save.
@shantini Someone told me about a setting for turning off all boosts, but I think that was a Firefish thing. Would it be useful for you to have the same thing in Mastodon. I can implement it. Not sure when it is going to be broadly available, however.
@shantini
I use Lists for that because I follow so many hashtags that my feed is way too long to be useful
@shantini you can make "lists" of your friends, to help consolidate their boosts in one place
@shantini I usually end up hiding boosts from people who boost way more than they post themselves.

@shantini

I agree, it's a byproduct of not wanting quote posts because we "can't be like Twitter" even though other platforms have had it longer, context is extremely important.

@shantini kinda surprised there isn’t a bespoke client option to hide all boosts in your timeline outright
@ryder yeah I agree, and Twitter had that (as a hack) for a while too. I usually turn off boosts for people who boost a lot but still 🤷🏾‍♀️
@ryder @shantini https://trunks.social/ does this (iOS and Android as well), as well as filtering out all replies.

afaik
@trunksapp is the only one who does this
trunks.social

A cross platform mastodon client. Available on Android, iOS, Mac and Web.

@shantini tap “hide boosts” on those people’s profiles?
@shantini Too many people are like “I must boost *every* post!” It makes for a noisy time line. Once figuring out the main culprits, turning off reposts for just two or three people usually does it for me.
@shantini I know there’s a Mastodon specific reason why people use it so much, but I hate it. I just want to ‘Like’ posts I like, not endorse and promote them with a boost
@danimal @shantini isn’t that exactly what favoriting them does?
@chucker @shantini yes and I use favoriting/liking 95% of the time. Most others seem to prefer boosting, which to me is wrong. People boost really bland things all the time
@shantini it's probably already been said, but there should be an option to remove boosts from the feed unless specifically opting in for a particular user.
@shantini Ask not for whom the trolls boost, they boost for thee.
@shantini This makes me feel seen
@shantini did you really expect anything less? 😁
@shantini ah, you knew perfectly well this was going to happen 8-)
@shantini Boosted the original post, then unboosted so I could boost this instead 😈
@shantini Great, isn’t it? ☺️
@shantini :sweating_man_can't_choose_button.gif: wondering if I should boost this
@shantini We did on Twitter, so why wouldn’t we here? ;)
@shantini It’s charming, isn’t it?
@shantini
Not falling for that one - gave a fave in lieu of a boost.
@shantini i love it - so true (except i didnt)
@shantini not falling for this
@shantini I might boost this just to prove a point lol
