I write the Fediverse Report, a news site about what is happening in the fediverse.

This is my personal account, where I share and comment on anything I find interesting.

Holy Moly! Je burgerservicenummer koppelen aan een trackingcookie?!?! Doe effe normaal!!! Overheidsinformatie moet gewoon OPENBAAR zonder restricties worden verstrekt en burgers moeten dat gewoon met behoud van privacy kunnen raadplegen. Toch? Hoezo überhaupt een tracking-cookie op een overheidswebsite. Foei!

While I like the visibility w/ the #kolektiva breach I also think this is missing the forest for the trees and gets distracted while skipping a lot of the practices that would have actually helped, and things like "VPN!" are just eyeroll worthy

For example.

1. Don't download your users database onto a personal device.

2. If you violate (1), don't ever have it unencrypted.

3. If you violate (1) and (2) don't go "well maybe we can just not tell anyone for six weeks."

FBI Seizure of Mastodon Server Data is a Wakeup Call to Fediverse Users and Hosts to Protect their Users

We’re in an exciting time for users who want to take back control from major platforms like Twitter and Facebook. However, this new environment comes with challenges and risks for user privacy, so we need to get it right and make sure networks like the Fediverse and Bluesky are mindful of past...

Hello Fediverse!

There's not much to see here yet, but we're working on building tools for handling #moderation needs across the #fediverse!

Project lead: @thisismissem

Thanks to @elan for agreeing to give us this name.

This account will be mostly unmonitored for now, and hopefully development will commence soon.

#introduction

Grateful to everyone who's engaging thoughtfully and proactively with the Stanford team's important report on how to manage CSAM across the fediverse.

And to folks who are responding with a defense reflex, I get it, having seen Big Tech respond the same way to research & news coverage over the years.

I think a mature fediverse is possible—one that takes problems and unfavorable media seriously, channeling frustrations toward addressing problems rather than lashing out at inconvenient news.

Volgende week hoort Tessel, samen met 7 anderen die terecht staan voor ‘opruiing’, de uitspraak van de rechter. Haar ‘vergrijp’? Oproepen tot vreedzame demonstraties op de A12. Wil jij hen steunen? Doe mee op 9 september! #StopFossieleSubsidies!

In this video I look at the collapse of the grain deal. For #Ukraine it's not a big loss. The grain deal was only acceptable as a temporary measure, and going forward they will want real control over maritime traffic to their ports. #Russia might be the bigger loser in this. If they have to enforce a real blockade, then it will put their warships in a vulnerable position. https://youtu.be/fvPcPZP-6os

Potentially disastrous outcome for #OpenSource developers in the EU (and, very likely, beyond those borders) - this is a well-intentioned, but very poorly-worded regulation likely to have a chilling effect on the software sector from developers who write code as a hobby or for education and fun, through to OSS foundations - and, "upwards", to businesses, enterprise and government https://fossforce.com/2023/07/bad-news-for-open-source-eu-committee-approves-the-cyber-resilience-act/
Bad News for Open Source: EU Committee Approves the Cyber Resilience Act - FOSS Force

A number of open-source organizations say that if this act becomes law, it will do damage to open-source, both in Europe and globally.

@kainoa @blackspike @angelolz @firefish Thank you for making such a cool, fun and safe space.I truly believe the work you guys do is helping advancing the fedi in positive and progressive ways. The care not only for the tech but for the design and the user is huge! I am excited to be a part of it and to witness the growth of Firefish and the fedi. I've told you a thousand times how much I love Calckey lol Thank you! Congrats
