A submersible taking tourists to Titanic wreck has gone missing

OceanGate Expeditions previously told Insider that its sub was designed with help from NASA. Now it's gone missing on a journey to the Titanic wreck.

"#US and Canadian aircraft are searching the area, as well as large ships, but the hunt was 'complex' because crews do not know if the vessel has surfaced, meaning they must scour both the surface and the ocean depths, said Rear Admiral John Mauger, first district commander of the #USCoastGuard, overseeing the search-and-rescue operation."

"A number of potential errors could have occurred. One possibility is that the #Titan's communication equipment may have failed, meaning they are unable to communicate with above-water crew but able to freely navigate. It's also possible there is a problem with the ballast system, which controls the vessel's descent and ascent. Another scenario is that the Titan became "hung up on a piece of wreckage that could keep it from being able to return to the surface." #Titanic

@Norobiik thank you for your ongoing coverage of this.
@Norobiik How much is this costing Canadian & American taxpayers? #titan #titanic #titansearch

@Norobiik Why is it whenever something bad happens, we find out this sort of thing afterward?

Sounds like the Deepwater Horizon, where they skipped testing the cement sealing the well.

And like the Max8 where they skipped training the pilots on the new feature they added.

And like that ship, back in the early 20th century, where they skipped the double hull and the additional lifeboats originally planned. What was that ship called again?

Oh yeah. The Titanic. We haven't learned a thing.

@mike805 No we haven't learned a thing. Deep space & the ocean depths are two of the most unforgiving environments and fastest punisher of mistakes there is.

As one poster said, the techbro mantra of "Move fast and break things" becomes "Move fast, break things then drown" in those places where tolerance for any bullshit is zero.

@Norobiik https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12218125/German-paid-OceanGate-Titanic-wreck-2021-says-incredibly-lucky-make-it.html

This whole operation sounds like a clown show. The "one button" thing is NOT reassuring. I'd like at least three, please. Main power, backup power, and emergency ballast release.

The Russian submersibles used, carried by their research ship Academik K..., had the ability to detach the main battery if it failed, causing the sub to surface rapidly.

In one of those Titanic dives, a drone minisub's battery failed and they had a hairy time recovering it.

Arthur Loibl, 60, dove the 12,500 feet to the Atlantic ocean wreck site in August 2021, and says he was 'incredibly lucky' to survive, saying the Titanic expedition was his most 'extreme' adventure.

@Norobiik Smells like a juicy lawsuit to me, and that despite the massive hold-harmless letter passengers had to sign, warning them that the company would not be liable if they were killed in ways even Sir Robin's minstrels couldn't imagine.

No doubt the investors behind the company will take solace in the thought that US bankruptcy law should keep them from having to pay anything out themselves.

@marcas I agree, OceanGate won't be able to wriggle out of their responsibility even if the Titan passengers come out of this alive. A full blown investigation is sure to follow, the company is more or less toast.

@Norobiik If they are any navy subs in the area, they have no doubt been told to listen. They cannot go that deep, but if they are below the thermal layer they could hear someone knocking on the hull.

Here is a reporter that got trapped under the Titanic's propeller. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12216165/US-TV-reporter-gives-nerve-jangling-account-day-survived-Titanic-submarine-scare.html

US TV reporter gives nerve-jangling account of the day he survived a Titanic submarine scare

The suppressed terror, the sense of loneliness and helplessness that must be gripping the five occupants of the lost Titanic submersible, is something Dr Michael Guillen understands only too well.

Daily Mail

@mike805 That was a beautiful though chilling article, thank you.

I didn't know that submarines can't go that deep. Come to think of it, submersibles are pretty much a one trick pony capable of diving to great depths but not much good at anything else.
