"The Titan is the only sub in #OceanGate's fleet that is made to go as deep as the wreck, which sits 12,500 feet at the bottom of the #AtlanticOcean, about 370 miles off the coast of #Newfoundland, #Canada. The Titan can fit five people — one pilot and four crewmembers — and has 96 hours of life support on board, according to OceanGate's website."

A submersible taking tourists to Titanic wreck has gone missing

OceanGate Expeditions previously told Insider that its sub was designed with help from NASA. Now it's gone missing on a journey to the Titanic wreck.

"#US and Canadian aircraft are searching the area, as well as large ships, but the hunt was 'complex' because crews do not know if the vessel has surfaced, meaning they must scour both the surface and the ocean depths, said Rear Admiral John Mauger, first district commander of the #USCoastGuard, overseeing the search-and-rescue operation."

Missing Titanic submersible: what is the Titan tourist sub and what might have happened to it?

The five-person craft has 96 hours of oxygen on board and can dive to depths of 4km to explore wreckage of the Titanic

"A number of potential errors could have occurred. One possibility is that the #Titan's communication equipment may have failed, meaning they are unable to communicate with above-water crew but able to freely navigate. It's also possible there is a problem with the ballast system, which controls the vessel's descent and ascent. Another scenario is that the Titan became "hung up on a piece of wreckage that could keep it from being able to return to the surface." #Titanic

@Norobiik If they are any navy subs in the area, they have no doubt been told to listen. They cannot go that deep, but if they are below the thermal layer they could hear someone knocking on the hull.

The suppressed terror, the sense of loneliness and helplessness that must be gripping the five occupants of the lost Titanic submersible, is something Dr Michael Guillen understands only too well.

@mike805 That was a beautiful though chilling article, thank you.

I didn't know that submarines can't go that deep. Come to think of it, submersibles are pretty much a one trick pony capable of diving to great depths but not much good at anything else.
