#redditmigration #reddit

One of my friends is a mod of a very large subreddit that went private for the blackout. Last night she received a message saying that she had been stripped of her moderator rights and the subreddit was taken public again. To be very clear, the subreddit members had specifically voted in favor of going private.

It seems like reddit will stoop lower and lower to try and break the blackout. I'm seething.

@Tsutsuku Which sub-reddit?
@yoasif
subreddit is u/tumblr and u/taytay_is_god is the moderator who was stripped.
@yoasif
It looks like a lot of the comments that taytay made explaining what was going on have been deleted but https://www.reddit.com/r/tumblr/comments/12f8mwz/moderator_announcement_all_bot_posts_and_comments/ shows some of her activity as a mod, https://www.reddit.com/r/tumblr/comments/147g2b8/i_dont_know_if_we_are_already_but_we_need_to_shut/ is where she confirmed that the subreddit was going to go private, and this is the poll showing the community decision
Moderator Announcement: all bot posts and comments will be removed and all bot accounts will be perma-banned.

@Tsutsuku
It looks like it's private again, did they change something?
@Aissen
Yeah she said that it went back to private ~3hrs ago, but she's still de-modded.

@Tsutsuku @yoasif I believe the story there is that there was a fairly inactive top mod that was a reddit admin, and they went scorched earth with the rest of the mod team and re-opened the sub.
@jimmyhiggs337 @yoasif
Nope, Taytay was incredibly active on there and got de-modded anyways. So at least in this instance, activity was not the reason.
@Tsutsuku @yoasif you got what I said backwards
@Tsutsuku @yoasif inactive mod was top mod, the top mod after a long time if being inactive, kicked them out even though they were active
@Tsutsuku This is completely unsurprising and exactly what a lot of us expected Reddit to do.
@Tsutsuku This has always been the obvious outcome for larger subs. They'll bring in a new volunteer admin who doesn't know the admin tools they've just lost. If moderation quality goes to shit, that won't show up in the quarterly statements until after the IPO.
@deegeese
It was the most likely outcome but having proof is important
@deegeese @Tsutsuku "Scabs" in other words.
But scabs won't work for free for long...
@deegeese @Tsutsuku It was already a lot of work to mod large subs before with 3PAs but it could be 10x worse now without good tools and when half the submissions are from angry disgruntled users.
@Tsutsuku Name the subreddit.
@markstos
I already named it twice, but /r/tumblr
@Tsutsuku they said this would happen too. But it'll only piss off the mods and users more! #Reddit
@Tsutsuku Well, I had hope the administration would listen. But that is dashed. Now, even if they do reverse their decision, I'm not going back. Bye bye Reddit!
@alleyfae Yep same, oh well. The "big free omnicommunities" were nice as an era but defed is the future, again. @Tsutsuku
@Tsutsuku Not terribly surprising, they've pulled shit like this before. I kind of expected this to happen to any large subreddits participating in the blackout.
@Tsutsuku This is starting to feel more like Freenode than Twitter, tbh.
@Seirdy @Tsutsuku yeah, the Freenode hostile takeover was more “fuck you this is my playground” which seems like what’s happening here too, Twitter was just a series of very bad decisions
@erica @Seirdy @Tsutsuku
Very bad decisions that happened to send the very same message of "F*** you this is my playground"
@Tsutsuku well the upside is this is making me feel better about uninstalling reddit.
@Tsutsuku also signing up for Lemmy and joining a local discord has really helped support my reddit-free transition.

@Tsutsuku Ow. Do you happen to know if other moderators disagreed with the regular members' vote and so took her rights away?

(I can't see Reddit *admins* doing it, but you never know).

@bazbt3
I know that one of the mods has been explicitly going and deleting all of her comments so I'm assuming that mod infighting is a factor

@Tsutsuku Thanks. Aren't people weird.

It's one of the reasons I'm not sure what I'd do if someone asked to co-moderate one I run solo (but didn't create) - 142 subscribers so unlikely that'll ever happen. Unless something unprecedented got in the way.

@Tsutsuku it looks like r/tumblr is private currently, I wonder if there's been some infighting with their mods
@Tsutsuku This is horrifying but seems to be an example of what happens when you don't own the platform. Greatful for all the fediverse alternatives popping up now.
@Tsutsuku Do we know if this was done by Reddit or a different moderator?
@Stevoisiak
I asked her and she doesn't know

@Tsutsuku The mods for the main sub I read (DestinyTheGame) specifically explained to us that they couldn’t go dark indefinitely for exactly that reason.

They made it sound like it was an established thing that Reddit admins do to reopen a big sub if the mods have vanished, thrown a fit, or otherwise are considered to not be fulfilling their responsibilities. Reddit would then hand pick new mods for the sub.

It sucks that not all the mod teams were aware of this to work around it. :(

@Tsutsuku
This is exactly what they will try to do for any large subreddits that stay private. This is why I've decided to leave Reddit and not go back - that's the only thing they are going to understand.

Lemmy and Kbin will get better and better.

@Tsutsuku They need to be posting proof of that. This is huge if its started already. But I cant' imagine they would be starting the takeover with a sub that posts a different website's content. Wouldn't it make more sense to start up a sub with loads of OC?
@jakeypoo
I posted some links in this thread already but I didn't think to screenshot most of the comments before r/tumblr went private again. This is all I have screenshotted.
@jakeypoo
Okay I got this now. Pretty cut-and-dry.

@Tsutsuku It's basically idiot-admin Standard Operating Procedure.

Start with some small-ish to medium but contained drama. Attack all the people who have been doing free work for you to try and force open things that don't work without those people. Then, be confused that the drama got bigger instead of smaller.

@Tsutsuku I love how the Reddit Admins refuse to remove the white supremacist mods from /r/Canada because they don't feel it is appropriate to involve themselves in who moderates what subreddits but this is apparently where they draw the line.
@ANeM
it's crazy what the financial elites will do to increase their high score...I mean, bank account
@ANeM @Tsutsuku The astroturfing in that sub is gross and makes it completely unusable. The most obvious psyops ever and the admins are totally fine with it
@Tsutsuku capitalism is not just going to roll over and die when it's essentially based on the system that brought us all into existence in the first place
After staff revolt, Freenode management takes over hundreds of IRC channels for 'policy violations'

Gentoo and Raku call foul

The Register
@Tsutsuku deleted my Reddit accounts today. My 14 year old account. bye!

@Tsutsuku

I am keeping the sub I moderate open. Its topic is mental health related and we don't want anyone to miss out on our limited help. I would take it dark if it wasn't for that.

It is a prime example of what Cory Doctorow calls the enshittification of social media.

@Tsutsuku wow, I considered joining reddit last yr for a hot minute. Glad i'm here instead

@Tsutsuku

Ah. Looks like I’ll have to delete my Reddit account.

I had been hanging on to my account (but not using it) to see if they’d offer a reasonable compromise. I’m a firm believer that boycotts only work if you’re willing to go back when the problem is fixed, otherwise there’s no incentive.

But by the sounds of it Reddit aren’t willing to compromise at all and are doubling down.

@Tsutsuku shit, I was wondering if....no, when... this was going to happen.

@Tsutsuku I am u/cwenham on Reddit, the top moderator of r/pics and r/aww. Nobody from Reddit has stepped in to remove me or any of my mods.

We have been contacted by someone from Partner Communities at Reddit to schedule a chat, but it not come with, nor has there been any threat or ultimatum.

@WenhamToo
good. Fingers crossed that things work out for you.
@Tsutsuku Was it an automatic message from reddit itself? And if I'm allowed to know: Which subreddit? I'm a mod of a subreddit too and we are also private for now. 😅
@dominik
The subreddit is r/tumblr, the mod is u/taytay_is_god, and this is a screenshot of the message she received.
@Tsutsuku Ok I can see that r/tumblr is restricted now and she is not a mod of this subreddit. Thanks for the info!
