I keep a record of the books I read over the year and am going to attempt tooting them this year. 1. The book to accompany the film. It’s an oral history so quick to read and gives the clearest examples I’ve read recently about how the State was conspiring against the miners as well as gay history. A great book. #2023books #AmReading #MinersStrike #Pride #LGSM
2. A beautifully written novel that features loads of facts about Cypriot history and nature but in a readable way. I do love the books of Elif Shafak. #2023books #AmReading #Cyprus #Trees #ElifShafak
3. An interesting account of 1930s queer history and the build up to ww2. Although I think it’s overegging things to say without these mps “Britain would never have faced down the Nazis.” #ChrisBryant #AmReading #2023books #QueerHistory #GlamourBoys #WorldWarTwo #WorldWar2
4. A curious book. It’s easy to read and has some lovely lines. And I liked the idea of community for the different women. I just can’t help thinking it’s completely unrealistic. #APeoplesHistoryOfHeaven #AmReading #2023Books #Bangalore
5. Excellent. A really interesting book about 3 women who lived in a Venetian palazzo written in an easy to read and gossipy tone. #TheUnfinishedPalazzo #LuisaCasati #DorisCastlerosse #PeggyGuggenheim #Venice #AmReading #2023books
6. Obviously I don’t agree with all of her opinions but it’s useful to read through and help you decide if you’re living the best way. And I did find myself quoting some bits at the family yesterday.
7. A book about grief, faith, the opioid crisis, immigration and science doesn’t sound like the sort of thing I’d read. But I loved Gyasi’s Homegoing so i thought I’d give it a try and I’m glad I did. A beautiful story gorgeously told. #AmReading #2023books #YaaGyasi #TranscendentKingdom
8. I’ve been a fan of Cumming ever since The High Life and this didn’t disappoint. Well written, funny and quite the life. #2023books #AmReading #AlanCumming #memoir
9. 2023books no 9. Great. I especially enjoyed her intersectionality- how she linked trans rights to the need for rights for other communities- and how she tried to explain how certain areas of uk feminism have become so transphobic. #TransRightsAreHumanRights #AmReading #2023Books #ShonFaye
10. A delightful read. #AmReading #2023books #BobMortimer
11. He keeps writing them and I keep reading them. This is even more ridiculous than the others. #2023books #AmReading #GabrielAllon
12. This definitely isn’t a book I expected to read. But then I kept seeing good reviews and it was on display when I went in the library so I had to give it a try. I’m glad I did. It’s a pleasant story and I don’t think I’ve read about 1940s New York before. #AmReading #2023books #ElizabethGilbert #CityOfGirls
13. Beautiful and thoughtful writing that is of such quality that it was fine that the story drifted along- it reminded me of a Jon macgregor book. Plus lots of great shout outs to different black artists. #AmReading #2023books #OpenWater
14. It’s just a nice, cosy series that would make a great Sunday evening tv show. #AmReading #2023books #RiversOfLondon #BenAaronovitch
15. I really enjoyed this memoir about trying to be a normal teenager in a surreal world. #2023books #AmReading #Belfast #TheTroubles #1990s
16. Yet another biography of a rich white person creating scandal. I still enjoyed it. #2023books #AmReading #HappyValley #IdinaSackville #TheBolter
17. What a life! From growing up in poverty at the start of the 20th century, touring and trying to make the Marx Brothers a success, living the high life in the 20s, going to the ussr in the 30s etc. There’s very little about the Marx bros after they made it big and more about how he enjoyed life. #HarpoMarx #MarxBrothers #2023Books #AmReading #Autobiography
18. I kept seeing this being recommended so thought I’d give it go. Well written and observed but it gave me no joy to read. #2023books #AmReading
19. Excellent. It starts with a build up where you learn about the gentrification and black history of Brooklyn. And ends with a fun thriller. #AmReading #2023books #Brooklyn
20. A sweet book about enjoying people watching and being in London. #2023books #AmReading #London #NonFiction
21. Another biography of a rich alcoholic. I read this because I wanted to find out more about her time living in soho in the 1950s but that was over in less than a chapter. #2023books #AmReading #Memoir #CarolineBlackwood
22. I always borrow Hewson’s books when I spot them in the library. This was a bit clunky at the start but then the story took off. #2023books #AmReading #Venice #WorldWarTwo
23. Excellent. An interesting life and also a good introduction to British rule in India, suffragette militancy and Indian soldiers in world war 1. #2023books #AmReading #SophiaDuleepSingh #Victorians #Suffragettes #ColonialHistory
24. Lovely and sweet. Although I now have a long list of holds in my library account and have bought some more random choices from eBay. Be warned! #2023books #AmReading #RobinInce #Bookshops
25. Interesting. I like how I’m now starting to recognise anecdotes and people from the different soho drinkers biographies I’ve read. #2023books #AmReading #FrancisBacon #Soho #Wivenhoe
26. Not the most original plot but beautifully written and evocative of what it must have been like in the North of Ireland at the time #2023books #AmReading #Trespasses #TheTroubles
27. Ridiculous but fun. The author is strangely obsessed with jawlines. #AmReading #2023books
28. Really interesting. The start is a bit repetitive but it’s building up the atmosphere for the ending as the author explains what it’s like to be black in the United States. #2023books #AmReading #BlackLivesMatter
29. I would love to talk to anyone who has read this. It’s beautifully written but the last half gets stranger and stranger. And I’m not sure why the person who wrote the blurb gave it that storyline?! #AmReading #2023Books #TheLastChildrenOfTokyo
30. Very readable but everyone does come across as a knob #2023books #AmReading
31. Very readable, quick biographies of modernist artists living in Hampstead in the 1920s-30s. Thanks to @Schopflin for the recommendation. #2023books #AmReading #Hampstead #Modernism
32. An interesting time/ location for a crime series. Starts slow but picks up about a third of the way through. The 2nd time I’ve managed to read a Shelterbox Book Club book on time! #2023books #AmReading #Shelterbox
33. I really enjoyed this. It’s as good as people say. #AmReading #2023books #Gaming #GabrielleZevin
34. I know I say this every time but he really does keep churning them out, my library keeps putting them on display and I keep borrowing & reading. They are just very readable. Plus there’s no guilt now his politics have calmed down. #2023books #AmReading
