Bit of a long shot, but could my good mastodon follower folk give me some boosts?

I'm starting work on a documentary podcast series about the future of space; renewable/sustainable technologies, commercialism in the sector and the public's perception of it all.

I'm hoping to connect with people who know space to complement my client's contacts, so any signal boosting would be appreciated!

@drewtoynbee @acolangelo is a must follow, also the https://spacey.space/ instance

@drewtoynbee You might find some good people on the #astrodon and #space hashtags.
@mark thank you, I will check them out!

@drewtoynbee

Before I boost ... if this is going to be rah-rah space, I have negative interest in growing your resch.

@vor that's fair enough! I wouldn't go so far as to say it will be rah rah, definitely looking for it to be balanced, but particularly with the sustainable part it probably will be... Optimistic? Like "hopefully, if humans don't f*ck it all up, this is how it could look"
@drewtoynbee @vor
Doing any space exploration prior to achieving net-zero is unsustainable sadly at this point in our #ClimateCrisis.
@GreenFire @vor that's absolutely a point of discussion that's come up and will be being looked at

@GreenFire @drewtoynbee @vor

60 years ago, when Apollo went to the moon, we didn't know our house was on fire. We should know better now, and even some of my acquaintances who are most ardent about sustainability give space a pass.

No one should get a pass until we stop burning our house down.

I like space. I don't want people to think I'm in the tinfoil hat corps. The current iteration of space exploration is not sustainable and should not be prioritized over preventing our demise.

@drewtoynbee I dont know how to quote a toot here - but you should go through this toot to find some of the answers you looking for - https://mastodon.social/@sundogplanets/110214614007170948
@drewtoynbee hey! I'm a long time amateur space enthusiast. I don't know if I can assist in any way but I'm here. That's all, I'm here 🤓

@drewtoynbee

Sounds like a step #SpaceX is exploring in depth, too.
Would be interesting to see some of your future findings here.

@HistoPol I will definitely be spreading the word when the project is further underway or finished, depending on NDAs and things. I'm really excited about it

@drewtoynbee

I can totally see that. "The Final Frontier". 😀

Hopefully, there will also be some ethical advisors on board. Humanity is so not ready for this from that perspective. I can only hope that we do not discover #extraterrestrial life in the #SolarSystem.

Anyway, the best of luck for this exciting project. 😀

@drewtoynbee Hi! In the US there is the Museum of Space History in Alamogordo, NM (ZIP is 88310). There are awesome volunteers who were always really well informed; not only about the history of space but also about current ongoings and future plans. At the time, there was planning going on about a spaceport in Las Cruces, NM. I'll hashtag some ideas, maybe you can get a good contact out of it :-)

@StefGo thanks so much I will check it out!
@drewtoynbee Also, in Germany there is #technikmuseumspeyer https://speyer.technik-museum.de/de/ase, which hosted an astronaut reunion in 2022. Maybe they are planning another one where you could interview one or more of them.....
European Astronaut Reunion 2022 | Technik Museum Speyer

Ein Treffen von europäischen Raumfahrern. Von 15 bis 16.30 Uhr findet im FORUM Kino des Museums eine Präsentation statt. Mit dabei sind elf europäische Astronauten und eine Astronautin.

@drewtoynbee @ZachWeinersmith literally just wrote a book on the topic 😉
@j_bertolotti @ZachWeinersmith fantastic thank you, I will pick up a copy!
A CITY ON MARS

Earth is not well. The promise of starting life anew somewhere far, far away—no climate change, no war, no Twitter—beckons, and settling the stars finally seems within our grasp. Or is it? Critically acclaimed, bestselling authors Kelly and Zach Weinersmith set out to write the essential guide to a glorious future of space settlements, but after years of research, they aren’t so sure it’s a good idea.

@drewtoynbee I don’t think they’re on Mastodon but you could try @SpaceJuno on the bird site
@ginahelfrich thank you! I will have a look
@drewtoynbee I don't know anything about space other than I occupy some of it...but here's a boost for ya!

@drewtoynbee I work with #NASA #Kentucky (but in a software engineering role). You may want to talk to their director, Alexandre Martin.

An interesting spinoff from that is Space Tango, which creates health and technology products in microgravity.

@drewtoynbee Drew's looking for space renewables/commercial peeps. #introduction
@drewtoynbee I'll follow you for now, and when you make content beyond saying what you're going to do, I might boost that. Good luck.
@regphunt that is absolutely fair enough! Honestly this has been shared around about 1000x more than I was expecting it to be, it's a bit intimidating 😂

@drewtoynbee Not sure if you want an astronomer's perspective on how badly the commercial development of LEO is currently going, but let me know if you do!

I spend a lot of time thinking about this now. https://theconversation.com/soon-1-out-of-every-15-points-of-light-in-the-sky-will-be-a-satellite-170427

Soon, 1 out of every 15 points of light in the sky will be a satellite

Megaconstellations of satellites will visually clutter the night sky, disrupting astronomical research. And the environmental damage caused by these satellites is still unknown.

@sundogplanets thanks so much, project is still very early days so I don't know exactly who/what will end up being part of it, but I will have a read and will get in touch if there's a good place for you!
@drewtoynbee Hi there! I do a lot of space law work and speak regularly about some of these issues. Would love to connect. https://www.alysonclairelaw.com/space-law

@alysondecker that's amazing! I will absolutely get in touch

@drewtoynbee

It might be worth giving a shout to the London Hackspace mailing list. :D

https://groups.google.com/g/london-hack-space

There was a group of members who took part in a CubeSat project run by Imperial College.

I think that they were testing a design of 3d-printer that could work in Zero-G. :D

Also, I think that the LHS Radio club were doing some sort of comms for the project.

Their mailing list can be found here:

@BillySmith that is super cool - I don't know if you know the Bobiverse books by Dennis E Taylor, but they have definitely educated me on how exciting 3D printing in zero G will be!

Thanks for those links I will 100% check them out

Heaven’s River – A Quick Description of the Megastructure

*** Spoiler Alert *** If you haven't read the book yet, best stop now. . . . . Heaven’s River – The Topopolis I’ve seen a few comments that Heaven’s River is not sufficiently well described in the book, so I’ve put together this post to describe it in more detail. First, let’s start with ...

Dennis E. Taylor
@drewtoynbee you should reach out to Matt Kozlov who is the MD for Techstars Health and Space, Cody Simms, who is a partner at MCJ and Jonathan Strauss, founder of Climate Draft.
@bradbarrish thank you, I'll add them to the list!
@drewtoynbee Seeing Microsoft's "Azure Orbital Ground Station" offering, including a tutorial about how to schedule a data download from the NASA Aqua satellite, was an interesting recent connection among space technology, commercialization, and everything as a cloud service.
