In Texas, Daniel Perry—a white man—posted "he might kill a few people," drove his car past a red light & into a previously peaceful BLM march, shot & killed a protestor, was duly charged, unanimously convicted—& TX Gov Abbott is pardoning him.😳

Texas is announcing to the world that in their view, murdering people for exercising their First Amendment right to peacefully protesting racism is OK.

This isn't democracy. It's fascism. This sets a literally deadly precedent for the future.

@QasimRashid
I don't know how we can save TX. GOP have "fixed" the system so much and for so long that they guarantee their power over the state no matter what happens in elections.
@birdpoof @QasimRashid Texas voted for Abbott
@rebeccabguinn @QasimRashid
But did they? I mean, a huge percent did, sure, but how did the 2021 GOP gerrymandering factor in.
@birdpoof @QasimRashid gerrymandering wouldn’t effect a state wide election, voter suppression, but the vote was overwhelmingly for Abbott so voter suppression is probably not to be blamed for that number spread.
@rebeccabguinn @birdpoof @QasimRashid Not in my neighborhood. It was lined with Beto signs and MAGA (Mothers Against Greg Abbott) signs. I thought the guy was going to lose. Then I went to vote and watched the machine change my Beto vote to Abbott. Yes, I fixed it…but it had already been fixed.
@AnnaBaxter @birdpoof @QasimRashid your complaint needs to be substituted. Remember that is the same complaint against the machines as the republicans had.
@rebeccabguinn @birdpoof @QasimRashid
I’m 100% aware of the GOP lies and stolen election claims. The irony of the situation is that it was actually happening in deep red TX. I voted here, I know what happened to me. The machine changed my vote, I changed it back. I was warned that votes for Beto were being switched, and I went in to find it to be true. You can believe the Texas Tribune or you can believe an actual voter.
Texas voting machines aren’t switching votes

Sensitive touch screens aren’t always user friendly and make it easy for voters to accidentally select the wrong candidate. Voters should carefully review their ballots before submitting them.

The Texas Tribune
@birdpoof @QasimRashid the demographics is against them. Sure they have gerrymandered things - but fascists will always overdo it. They'll continue to identify more enemies. The laws they are passing - will constrain everyone - conservatives and liberals alike.
@birdpoof @QasimRashid get all the hostages out of that state and then nuke it
@QasimRashid they're trying to scare protestors into not coming out while empowering shooters at the same time. Then they blame the protestors. Purposefully stirring the pot and trying to confuse the American public. Some Helter-skelter in a suit with a nice haircut bullshit.
@QasimRashid Why the hell do we allow executives to pardon terrorists?
@QasimRashid Any possibility of the feds prosecuting this POS on civil rights violations? (And by this POS, I mean the pardoned murderer, not Abbott.)
@alexlubertozzi @QasimRashid Perhaps you should consider the fact that Abbott IS a pos.
@AnnaBaxter @QasimRashid I know Abbott’s a piece of shit. They both are, I was trying to make clear which one ought to be charged.
Texas governor says he will pardon murderer - Kevin Drum

Here's the latest from Texas. During the summer of 2020 an Army sergeant named Daniel Perry was upset about a nearby BLM protest. He wrote to a friend on social media that he might “kill a few people on my way to work. They are rioting outside my apartment complex.” The friend, naturally, asked, “Can you legally do so?” Perry said

Kevin Drum
@QasimRashid
White people, especially when they commit a hate crime in the South, have no accountability when pardoned. This is disgrace and a middle finger from Abbott to the judiciary and jurors.
@QasimRashid I wish we could be careful about Texas. The word. It was Abbott who pardoned this horrible man. I live in Texas, and I have voted against Republicans including Abbott every chance I get. In Texas, but not Abbott.

@johnb48 @QasimRashid There is a popular misconception that Texas is a solid wall of red, when in fact, it's much closer to purple. If it weren't, Republicans wouldn't be going so far out of their way to try to cement their power. Millions of people live here who didn't vote for Abbott or Trump.

Plenty of vulnerable people live in Texas, including a hell of a lot of LGBTQIA folks, POC, others whose lives are literally on the line here. Writing off the whole state writes them off too.

@jetsilver @johnb48 @QasimRashid

Democrat in Texas, thank you 😊

@johnb48 @QasimRashid he won’t stop until people stop him. See how Israelis stopped Netanyahu? He won power in Israel, but the same people stopped him from bulldozing them. Texas Liberals and rational people must find allies in the GOP and stop #gregabbott
@QasimRashid your writing style is confusing sir... "What did you just say and what's your point?"
@QasimRashid fascism. It can happen here. It is happening here.
@QasimRashid I just came here to say fuck you #gregabbott ! It’s a shame that oak tree spared you!
Fuck you #texas if you don’t take to the streets to oppose this.
@QasimRashid utterly unacceptable in its entirety!
@QasimRashid @monkeyborg every day that piece of shit earns his lost legs more and more. Too bad the tree didn’t just take him out completely. I hope he’s in pain every fucking day of his life.
@shadowbottle @QasimRashid @monkeyborg Most people don’t realize he sued the homeowner for millions, received his settlement, then changed the ceiling for OTHERS from such accidents when he got into office. He’s a real “special” sob.

@QasimRashid EXACTLY!

#Texas under #Abbott wants #StochasticTerrorism by reactionary #extremists as a means to commit #facist #terror against the opposition and marginalized people.

After all, it's easier for him to deny state-sponsorship if they ain't in party uniforms...

Same vibes tho...

@QasimRashid

Flagging this thread - Texas governor pardons racist murderer.

@QasimRashid The GOP stand for many things, law and order isn’t one of the them
@QasimRashid Gov can’t actually believe this would actually help him?

@QasimRashid

The dangerous reality in any democracy is that the end result of apathy or ignorance is exactly the same as unlimited tolerance. If you do nothing while bad actors work to destroy your democracy—no matter how perfectly designed or implemented—then eventually enough checks and balances will be circumvented and you’ll wake up to find you’re living in a fascist, authoritarian, oligarchic state.
Excusing the people of Texas by observing that gerrymanders, suppression and corrupt judiciary make it very hard NOW to alter the situation conveniently ignores the slow but reversible erosion that led up to the current situation.
Fascists rely on and encourage apathy and ignorance, not good will and tolerance, and the only remedy is active resistance.
Otherwise they’ll always win.

@infinite8horizon @QasimRashid Punch the nazis IN TIME, before they get the chance to murder you LEGALLY.
@QasimRashid Nothing about Texas makes sense to me.
@QasimRashid The DOJ need to bring a federal civil right violation indictment. We’ve been there before with the South. We’ve dealt with these fascists before.
@QasimRashid Seems Crazy to Make Murder Legal... If You Murder the "Right" People...
@QasimRashid Abbot is evil, as are those who continue to support him.
@QasimRashid
Aligning yourself with criminals, murderers and wholey dishonest people seems to be the platform, mission, vision and goal of the #Republican Party.
@QasimRashid Man... Tennessee was the #1 shithole state for what, a day? Texas couldn't stand to have Tennessee win at anything...
@QasimRashid Can we get the #DOJ to get a civil rights case in Federal Court against this domestic terrorist/murderer? We need something to prevent Abbott from making it okay to kill protesters.
@QasimRashid the argument I have heard is the person he killed was armed with a rifle and aimed it at him. Obviously the jury rejected thst argument. Is there any evidence of that?. This is the problem of allowing unrestricted open carry. How do you decide who is the “good guy” with the gun?

@Tonydunc @QasimRashid

Would it have been perfectly legal for others in the BLM protest to shoot him to death in their own self defence?

Basically a legal deadly shootout

@QasimRashid the US Justice Department should bring charges for civil rights violations

and he can still be sued in civil court for wrongful death and lose everything

@QasimRashid
Welcome to Westworld; where nothing can go wrong…go wrong…go wrong.
@QasimRashid it seems to me that the State of Texas is the brother city to Washington DC and linked into Wall Street with its brother the Fed Reserve thus forming : to borrow ex Texan President George Bush Jnr words “ the axis of evil”!
@QasimRashid How long before companies - especially major national brands and multinationals - recognise that some states in America are no longer safe working environments for female/BiPoC/LGBTQIA employees? Some countries legislate that companies mist provide a safe working environment, making this harder to ignore as an issue...
@QasimRashid so start demanding that the GOP be abolished.
@QasimRashid Texas also announcing it does not support trial by jury. Important step in tge March to fascism.
@[email protected]
If he or I should say when he is pardoned will the justice department be able to charge Daniel Perry with civil rights violation. Also can he be charged by a military court since he was active duty?
#BlackLivesMatter
#justice
@QasimRashid I, as a recent become Texan, believe Governor Abbott is entirely wrong!
@QasimRashid
Doesn't Florida allow you to drive into protesters now, too?
So many Southern states doing their best to make the Confederacy look not so bad.
