@chrisoliver @pluralistic It should be illegal for companies to call it buying when it's clearly just a "rent-until-we-stop-caring"
This is why @pluralistic is always preaching about #DRM-free digital media and software. Sony is deleting over 500 movies customers paid for through the PlayStation Store because they don’t want to renew their license with Studio Canal. #enshittification
there is enough if we share

"Humans are to blame for climate change".

Really? Is a Bangladeshi seamstress to blame? Is a street child from a Brazilian favela to blame? Or perhaps a subsistence fisherman from Somalia or an elderly tribeswoman from Papua New Guinea?

Some quite specific humans are to blame.

Microsoft adds another year to Windows 10 extended update program

About a quarter of PCs are still running Microsoft's previous operating system.

There are some narrow and very specific uses for AI. Pretending to be a human to do customer support is not one of them. I spent 20 minutes hopelessly confusing a AI customer support agent until it connected me to a human and they solved my problem in 15 secs. Don't tell 10 year old me this, but the future actually sucks.
@eniko time for revival of Gunpei Yokoi's / nintendo's "withered technology" philosophy, pretty please? :)

@eniko

The RAM manufacturers were busted for operating a cartel, but that was when the laws were being enforced.

I can understand that they want to milk the current bubble while it lasts, but doing that at the expense of their other customers, is a short-sighted business strategy.

Since Valve got into making boxes, the next step might be making components? :D

@ratsnakegames @eniko Hmm, last time I checked Steam Community was full of bigoted and racist comments and twitter warriors making sure they piss off solo devs with their sealioning about stupid things for the cheap clout. Steam itself is drowning in ai slop and asset flips, what kind of moderation are we talking about?

Very pleased to publish this important essay from Gina Romero, UN Special Rapporteur, about the crisis of surveillance infringing on civic space:

"For a long time, we have been told that government surveillance is like a sharp scalpel: a precise tool used against dangerous actors. The truth is that digital surveillance has been transformed into a massive, society-wide, permanent ecosystem of suspicion that affects, or can potentially affect, everyone."

Digital surveillance is breaking activist mental health

Digital surveillance does much more than steal data. It inflicts deep human wounds; it stops people from safely developing and expressing their identities, breeds trauma that can last for generations, and fractures the human mind.
