Software bug in Abbott Freestyle Libre continuous glucose monitor kills SEVEN people…

The FDA reports that Freestyle injured over 700 people and killed seven people with this bug. Specifically, the bug caused the device to falsely report an extremely low glucose level. Advanced stage diabetics use low reading information to inform them that they may have too much insulin currently. The usual remedy is to eat something sugary to raise glucose in the blood. Such should be done only with great care, as a false low reading can harm and even kill the patient (who eats a high-sugar-content item while glucose in the blood is, in fact, not low). #Abbott #Pharma #BigPharma #Diabetes #MedTech #MedicalElectronics

Glad to send a few (they are tiny & fit in a regular envelope) to @Atc1441 or anyone else interested in reverse engineering. Only problem is: I can't tell the bad lot items from the others. Serial & lot numbers don't appear on the device itself, only on the box & the installation equipment.

But, in a sad state of e-waste, I generate a new used one every 2 weeks, so there are plenty to come.

BTW, I don't have any *unused* from the bad lots, either. Does anyone?

Probabilmente non sapremo mai se il problema fosse hardware o software. La divulgazione del bug è incredibilmente vaga e non è ancora chiaro quante indagini siano state condotte (se ce ne sono state) dalle autorità di regolamentazione governative su questo problema.

@alper I'm so sorry that you went through this! I am fortunate that I am not insulin dependent yet, but your story makes me realize that I really should be doing a finger-prick backup test at least once a day because who knows if my #Abbott #Freestyle #Libre 3 Plus is giving me accurate results!

Did you know that #Abbott caused the deaths of seven diabetics this year?

Some of Abbott's continuous glucose monitors (ironically named the #FreeStyle #Libre 3 Plus) incorrectly reported low blood sugar — a grave & dangerous error for insulin-dependent #diabetes. I fortunately wasn't injured, but Abbott's refusal to allow public examination of the technical details of their devices is tantamount to a cover-up.
