In Germany, teaching the Holocaust is mandatory.

It includes visits to concentration camp, museums, etc. They don't shy away from their own ugly history. Yet the kids aren't damaged; they're strengthened, matured, humbled. The U.S. needs to do same with slavery.

Not that complicated.

How is Germany dealing with its colonial history?

Genocide, looted art, stolen skulls: Calls for Germany to acknowledge its colonial past have grown louder. Four years ago, the German government promised to reexamine the issue, but has any real progress been made?

Deutsche Welle
@SteveSilent @unearth I can only speak for myself, but we talked extensively about colonialism, although we didn't really focus on Germany specifically, but rather talked about colonial history in general. But then again, I had bilingual history, which means (besides the lectures being held mostly in English) that we often focused on the history of English speaking countries in addition to the normal curriculum.
@SteveSilent @unearth @anreji it’s always presented as a thing that was done by other countries and the shit germany did was barely talked about and downplayed.

I picked u the fairy tale somewhere that Germany wasn't that bad a colonizer as others. I guess telling such nonsense was for making people feel good about something, there's this embarrassing 1930/40s period after all.

Of course, it's all BS, just ask the Namibians for the real story.

@enby_of_the_apocalypse @SteveSilent @unearth @anreji

@unearth how hard did they have to fight to get it that way.
@LeaBug @unearth The irony is it were the allies who required the young democratic Germany to teach about the Holocaust.
@frumble @unearth we need our allies to step up and have a talk with President Biden. I'm not kidding.
@unearth absolutely not that hard 💯
@unearth All those old plantations in the south should be monuments to the enslaved people who suffered there, not wedding destinations. And any profits from the land should to go the enslaved's descendants.
@unearth Agreed. But the conservatives really don't want that humbling. Hard to be a nationalist when you're forced to accept that America isn't the best when it comes to human rights, civil rights, democracy, safety, education, innovation, health care, environmental conservation, judicial fairness, economics, accessibility of goods and services, tolerance, or even basic freedoms... The realization that we're (at best) a C+ country is REQUIRED if we're ever going to improve.
@NerdiCorgi @unearth this is all because after the U.S. defeated the confederacy they curiously surrendered to the losers. For the first time it's the losers who rewrote history not the winners.
@unearth germans actually admit they were wrong though
@Kaleon @unearth But just after massive public campaigns of the allies to teach the Germans about their Holocaust.
@unearth Germany doesn't want it to happen again.
Some parts of the USA, not so much.
@unearth People living in the United States need to do the same thing. But alas, most of our history is "white-washed" and done on purpose.
@unearth The UK really REALLY needs to do the same wrt. the damage the British Empire inflicted on its dominions and colonies.

@cstross @unearth
Our politicians have a bad habit of using "people trafficking" as a euphemism and we class the slaves as "illegal immigrants".

If we can't give today's slaves hope what can we call ourselves?

@cstross @unearth All empires should, even the ones we no longer acknowledge to be empires.
@unearth @cstross it was a long struggle to get there. Many memorial sites only exist due to the stubbornness of survivors.

@unearth

If the policy objective is to prevent such horrors in future, the German strategy is the right one.

If the policy objective is to try and get back to the horrors under different names and with updated tactics, the Republican strategy is the right one.

The Republicans understand this.

@unearth they don't do this?!?

@unearth
I am of German descent. But that does not mean that I feel guilty when I learn about the Holocaust. I was not there. I did not participate. But that knowledge does tell me that there is a problem when a mob gets behind a leader like that. There is a lesson there.

America needs to own up to its past as well. And saying that does not make me any less of a patriot either.

@unearth Not these people. 🦄 🦎
@unearth Don't we? I was trad-style homeschooled and I sure did. What do they teach you guys in public schools!
@unearth Since when is this? I hear this very often on #Reddit, but I have never visited a single concentration camp.
There are many WW2 documentations on TV, though.
@Stefan_S_from_H @unearth Not every student visits a concentration camp, but we were all taught about the shoah, and repeatedly, at different ages. Weren't you?

@Resting @unearth I can't say for sure. I don't think so.

Maybe this started after the reunification because of all the Nazis in the east?

@Resting @unearth I have to add: At least 90% of all the history that happened outside of school was about WW2.

So, I can't pinpoint where I have my knowledge from. But I'm pretty sure I haven't heard of any Polish radio station at school.

(And my last name was important enough to learn about this time outside of school.)

@Stefan_S_from_H
It's true, there's even a lot of pop culture about it. Did you never read any of the chuldren's books about the holocaust in school?

I don't get the but about a polish radio station.
@unearth

@Resting @unearth We had the Struwwelpeter, no children's books about the Holocaust. (Well, I read Harry Potter as an adult, and it had a Holocaust spell in it.)

Gleiwitz incident - Wikipedia

@unearth and the genocide of Native Americans… I remember doing visits to the local Chumash museum but they didn’t cover much about how their land was taken
@unearth the kids would be fine. It's their fragile, racist parents that would struggle with it. 😡

@unearth

"... with slavery" ... and genocide!
But it will never happen, because the US was founded on genocide and slavery (racism). White supremacists will never acknowledge these facts.
Therefore, they want to resolve the problem with fascism.
Not good!

@unearth

A strong next generation is precisely what Republicans don't want to see in the young

They want murderously insane child soldiers like Kyle Rittenhouse, not inspirational & smart children like Amanda Gorman

They want a next generation as simply consumers, not citizens

They want underpaid serf labor hopelessly mired in apathy & despair

They want addicts, to violence, to rage

They want the next generation saddled with debt; student loans & mortgages

They want a Nazi do-over

@unearth

I just realized why the ultra-right go absolutely nuts against young leaders like Congresswoman AOC and gun safety advocate David Hogg.

The overturn of Roe vs Wade was not just about removing the civil rights of women.

It's not just about the disenfranchisement of PoC, LGBTQ, immigrants, and women; and others being punished for voting Democrat.

It's a right wing attack on the young.

Young voters are the greatest risk to Republican billionaire donors & their power & control.

The Great Youth Exodus from Florida

Florida’s death-spiral into fascism may cost us an entire generation of gifted young people. Data released April 1 shows that 1 in 8 high school seniors plan to leave the state for college specifically because of the Florida GOP’s attacks on higher education.

@Npars01 @unearth Once another 30% of the #Boomers die off, and assuming it's even possible to fix some of the #gerrymandering the #GOP will never get into power again; and they know it.

That's why they feel they need to get rid of #democratic #elections within the next decade.

@Lorry @Npars01 @unearth
Ixnay on getting rid of baby boomers. I are one.
@stargazersmith @Npars01 @unearth Hey I am not wishing death on boomers :) - I was factoring in natural causes!
@Npars01 totally agree esp. the serf part. These jobs at Amazon or Walmart or any of these big box retailers try to get as close to actual slavery as they can get. Why work at Target if it isn’t a wage you can live on ?

@annietime

Retailers like Target and Walmart, instead of obeying the "rules of the free market" and raising wages to attract workers in a "labor shortage", they switched to self-checkout automation.

Republican billionaire donors will do absolutely anything to avoid paying a livable wage

Including adopting expensive yet faulty technology where frustrated consumers give up trying to scan items, and abandon their shopping to go where a retailer values the time of their customers more.

@Npars01 @annietime I love it when shoppers abandon huge carts of non-perishable items mid-checkout. It makes me laugh.

@ablackcatstail @annietime

Self-checkout is advertised as "time-saving". It isn't.

@Npars01 @unearth Not mortgages. Mortgages are a good deal that ultimately build wealth. That's why huge corporations are buying up single-family homes to turn into rental units: they want a nation of renters.

@msbellows @unearth

One in seven homes in Atlanta is owned by private equity hedge funds.

Both property prices & rents have ballooned because of the commodification of housing stock.

Housing & employment precarity is politically useful.

Boomers were mortgage free well before retirement. Gen X, Y, & Z will still be paying a mortgage after retirement, or forced to sell to pay for retirement.

Tenants of America's Biggest Landlord Form Union to Fight Evictions, Rent Hikes

The Blackstone Tenants Union (BTU) in San Diego aims to fight evictions and rising rents since the corporate landlord ended a COVID-19 eviction pause.

@Npars01 @msbellows @unearth when everyone lives out of a tipi or a car, will humans blame those people and not Blackstone?
@Npars01 @msbellows @unearth It's like that in Houston, too. Some were bought to convert to rentals. Now, build-to-rent is its own business...
@unearth that's very humanized of you, it's important to learn from the mistake we've made.
@unearth unlike Japan government. They still trying to erase the history of nanjing massacre. That's quite unacceptable and sad.
@unearth I know it won't be a popular take, but sometimes it's necessary to lose at least once (even if the price will often be a hefty one). This applies to people just as much as to countries or other kinds of communities.
@unearth
The US south would never go for it, they want it buried forever while trying to get back to that same place if they can.
@unearth yes, but germans aren't the dumbest fucking people on earth
@unearth truth isn’t complicated. Exploiting the truth whilst trying to make an “ungodly” profit--is a Murdoch/Republican campaign.
@unearth I was in a blue state, but we covered slavery quite extensively in school. If anything, we learned some really harsh stuff early on (Harriet Tubman & The Underground Railroad in maybe fourth grade?), and it ramped-up in intensity from there whenever we came back to American history at older ages (we watched Amistad in seventh or eighth grade).

@unearth UK has problems confronting its imperialist past, its role in the slave trade, its exploitation of the Commonwealth, working classes, women and children, as well as the disproportionate about of carbon dioxide it has added to the Earth’s atmosphere from being the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. Social mobility has shrunk in my lifetime. We all just unconsciously tug our forelocks are carry on acquiescing to the Establishment and Tories.

Germany is grown up.
