Of the folks I interacted with on the bird site, I'm noticing these migration patterns:

* #security peeps have mostly moved over here, primarily to infosec.exchange and a few to hachyderm or self-hosting
* dev & #FOSS folks have migrated en masse, primarily to hachyderm and self-hosting
* science fiction friends have mostly made the jump
* journalists are a mix - lots of folks cross-posting and lots still posting "write-only" over there, but lots still engaging too
* my #LGBTQ peeps are active in both places
* disability advocacy friends are still over there; a few #ADHD peeps are over here
* DEI type folks have depressingly mostly not moved here, but to LinkedIn
* founders & VCs have almost entirely _not_ moved
* housing/urbanist types mostly haven't moved, especially Canadians

Curious how that lines up with what others are seeing, especially among groups I haven't listed (those happen to be the groups I personally interact with – curious about your personal equivalents!)

#twittermigration #fediverse

@leigh Seeing similar results. InfoSec is here, MilTwitter not much, reporters and news orgs very hit and miss.
@Lightfighter I miss miltwitter/natsec twitter the most right now. Of all the people who should see the importance of doing things first…
@leigh my personal sense is that many DEI and minorities have encountered a steady stream of tone policing here in the fediverse, which may explain their absence. We have work to do as a community.

@DaveMWilburn @leigh It's harder to see here when someone else is getting harassed. On Twitter, it always pushed drama sometimes even when you weren't following any of the people involved.

Here, unless you're following the right people at the right time, it'll all happen outside your stream. It makes it harder to be a functional ally when you can't tell people are in trouble until they announce they're quitting.

@gooba42 @DaveMWilburn @leigh “the suburbs of social media” always seemed to capture the fediverse well. It’s both a positive and a negative but it encapsulates what you’re saying … you don’t see far beyond your neighbour’s fence.
@DaveMWilburn @leigh Personally, I like this place *way* better. (I'm autistic.) I have only had one person be obnoxious to me so far, and he saved me the trouble and blocked me first.

@leigh I still engage on birdsite with ye olde Housing Twitter and government/transit agencies. And shitpost there, a little. Otherwise it's all here.

I mute all pundits and journalists - happy to be far away from The Discourse when I'm here for FUN.

More social, less media

It’s Thursday and apparently all the journalists, banned by the new boss of the Former Site, are heading over to Mastodon.  Good for them, and I wish them the best of luck!  But most of them I won’t…

Tumblr
@suldrew that was actually a really nice read. Loved the idea behind it. Also it’s so nice to read a blog post and not get a pop up modal to subscribe to some newsletter 🙌🏽
@leigh Very interesting list. We need more like it. cc @davidslifka @atomicpoet @[email protected]

@leigh The trend that's striking to me is the number of ... let's say ex-Tumblr-type adult content folks either ignoring or actively rejecting fedi.

I'm not necessarily of the opinion that everyone on Twitter should go to Masto, but when a whole community collectively goes "nah" about something, I think it might be worth paying attention.

@owen @leigh I'm seeing some of those folks move over, but there's a (maybe good?) tension around which instances will support adult content.

Also, with tumblr’s lightened restrictions and their position that #fediverse support is coming soon, I wonder if this is going to matter soon.

@leigh
DEI folks to LinkedIn is a vibe
@jonny RIGHT it’s wild
@leigh
something something misattributing root causes something something
@leigh Also, politicians, celebrities and brands have not moved - one of the reasons this place is still as good as it is.
@leigh Lots of my librarian circles have moved, but there still seem to be a few of the academic librarians still over in the other place.
@leigh Most of my observations match yours. Reporters working outside the Anglosphere, and activists generally, seem to be mostly sticking to Twitter, at least for the moment.
@leigh it’s been very much a mixed bag for me. I think most security folks have accounts here, but a lot of them still post primarily in the bird site. I find myself going back and forth which is quite annoying.

@leigh a few UK journos have made the leap or are cross-posting but most haven't because TERFery is rife in UK journalism, and they know they're not welcome here.

UK politicians have mostly stayed on twitter where the journos are.

It's depressing.

@leigh programmer & gm in ttrpg here

@felislynx

Are you plugged into the #TTRPG ?

There's a lot going on but I think it skews more #IndieTTRPG rather than #DnD probably because there's some actual oxygen and the hate grifters just get banned as opposed to massive follower boosts.

@leigh

@Homebrewandhacking @leigh yes i am. I'm gm in Cyberpunk, Sibirpunk, Tales from the loop and Wolsung :)

@felislynx

Great games, great art! Love it!

I fear my meaning was unclear. 😀 There is no way to search for "Tales of the loop" on Mastodon, you'd have to look for #TalesOfTheLoop

See attached link.

PJ Coffey (@[email protected])

#TTRPGTuesday Tell me of your games! Oh and whilst you're here remember: this is not Twitter. There is no search function. Use: #IndieTTRPG #NotDnD #DnD #TTRPGPodcast #TTRPGNews And #KickstarterTTRPG for all your crowdfunding (or not, keep it a secret, you do you!) Also tag groups like @[email protected] @[email protected] and @[email protected] no one owns these but they reach across _un_ (not de) federated servers by boosting those that tag them. You're welcome, let's go!

mastodon.ie

@leigh I apply for "fellow nerd, none of the above" status.

I moved because MuskSite is not a good place to participate. I do not need all of that community to move, because they may have other objectives (like low-quality marketing and time wasting). I plan on sticking to that decision and have not gone back.

@leigh Harder to tell who is still on Twitter, but on the "who has moved to Mastodon" front, I'd say:

- nearly all of my FOSS friends & colleagues (unsurprisingly)
- most of the "tech policy" & tech journalists & people who primarily work on tech impacts on society seem to still be on Twitter, but there are definitely some posting here too
- a lot of academics have moved over
- I don't think a single sports fan I followed on twitter has moved over, though I've found some new follows here

@shauna @leigh this is one of the pieces that keeps me over there. March madness going on and very little (that I can find) on here.
@leigh
Among my people (primarily academics): geographers and cartographers have moved almost without exception, but migration scholars have not.
@lunavives that is absolutely fascinating, thank you!
@lunavives @leigh sounds like they need more pull factors

@guacamayan @leigh

Yes. They need more people here so that they can have the kinds of discussions they can have over there. See the problem?

@lunavives @guacamayan @leigh
Need a critical mass to move. I wonder how many people are tethered to the bird site by people who refuse to move or at least mirror?
@leigh most of my #FolkMusic friends haven't moved, I'm afraid. For a lot of them, Twitter's algorithm and the need to promote gigs and music releases make that an understandable choice, at least in the short term.

@pdcawley @leigh
Agreed about #FolkMusic

Twitter was always 2nd to FB for Here’s our gig, how does social media work? Why can’t we just play #IndieMusic? Ever since MySpace imploded in 2008

Masto is asking people to take on “another” thing, not just switch to a new one

None of the social media ever worked as well for promotion as a good email list and alt-weekly

(No idea if that is accurate, but it Feels true)

@gunchleoc ooh! I didn't realise @ionafyfe had moved over here. Brilliant singer and excellent arse kicker so she is.

And it's always great to be introduced to new folk too, so thank you!

@pdcawley @leigh I (@rachelcholst) have seen this as well. And it's made me use Mastodon less often than I'd like. I think Discord is The Way for a lot of people these days.
@leigh there's a group who delight in finding a "main character" for the day to drag, often because that person said something awful..
Those people are still on the bird site, still piling on.
@leigh that tracks. I think anyone whose work relies on public outreach, where “public” is broadly defined as “non techies”, has stayed put.

@leigh pro devs/sysadmins moved, hobby coding/generative art moved, pro cycling (teams, riders, journalists, fans) did not move, other cycling (transport, advocacy) had some movers but still seems mostly twitter based, local politics moved, journos didnt, animators/cartoonists stayed or moved to instagram, games developers seem to be retreating to other blog hosts. Hopeful the wordpress/tumblr adoption will bring more of the artists in.

Chats with IRL friends all moved to Signal, Whatsapp

@leigh Can concur on the urbanism front though I’ve found enough new follows here that my timeline isn’t lacking (except maybe Vancouver Island specific discussion)

@leigh I think part of that is that a lot of disabled people have enough problems navigating the shitshow that is the other social platforms and are being scared off as a result. My wife is a fine example.

We need to start talking to these folk and finding out what they need that we aren't doing. Let the birb die.

@leigh Boomer here, I’ve migrated after being on the bird site for 12 years.

@leigh

I follow a variety of artists. I notice the more technical an artist is (less 2d, more 3d, riggers, shading artists, game devs) the more likely I am to find them over here.

Across all though, the larger a following someone has on twitter, the less likely I am to see them here.

@leigh my experience is very much the same.

I have a bunch of gaming people I follow and the migration feels 35% done for that group.

@leigh #globalhealth international public health largely not moved
