I'm not a big StarWars guy but I don't hate it either. I finished the second episode of Andor yesterday and meh, does this get a lot better or am I just wasting my time?
Alright, y'all (and the sunk cost fallacy) have convinced me to least power through the 3rd episode.
The 3rd episode was better than the first two. I still haven't decided if I'll keep up with it, but glad I finished that one.
@paul I, a confessed Big Star Wars Guy, didn’t make it that far. Impressive.
@paul I'm not a Star Wars guy but I loved Andor.
@paul just now remembering that I spent the first few episodes going "yep. This sure is a star war." It felt very much like they were saying and doing things for fans with deep knowledge I didn't have. But I ended up really liking it, so much I forgot my initial reaction.

@bensaufley @paul I liked it a lot, but I'm a SciFi Junkie... if it has a scene with an alien or a black sky with stars I'm generally in for the ride. 😝

The only thing I felt was required knowledge was that there was a galactic Empire and there were Rebels... if they had added an explainer at the start I think even non-Star Wars fans could have gotten onboard.

In general: I thought it was a good look at the human condition and the acting was superb across the board. It was a show I found myself watching WITHOUT another device in my hand, it had my full attention.

I also feel like they are still creating the world for another season that will be more kick-ass and have more of the action some seem to be looking for from Andor. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@Tyroga fwiw I'm not looking for action and in fact action tends to bore me these days. I'd like more of season 1.

I love sci-fi but I *prefer* the "speculative fiction" kind over the "fantasy in space" kind. I'm immersed well enough in Star Wars that I know the main stuff. The first few episodes didn't feel completely opaque to me, they just felt like there were winks and nods that I wasn't getting. I admit I've also blanked out most of the Imperial Parliament stuff from the prequels.

@Tyroga the reason I ended up loving Andor was that it applied some real world themes, some really urgent ones, to this universe. It was much less "the chosen one will discover magic powers and rise to overthrow the evil empire" and a lot more "anyone can light the match that starts a rebellion" with a bit of "the bureaucracy of fascism"

@bensaufley Agree with you about not wanting the big bangs of action and the "power of the many" story rather than the messiah-like saviour.

Looking forward to a season 2.

@paul I felt as you do. The first 3 eps are incredibly slow and boring. But it was waaaaay better after that.
@paul Strongly recommend watching at least through “The Eye” (ep. 6). If it doesn’t grab you by then, might as well give up.
@paul you’ll miss a big part of the Star Wars back history if you give up.
@paul It does get better.
@paul my favorite description of it that I can’t find the source of now is it “takes the empire seriously” in a way the movies never did. And each 3-4 ep arc adds an order of magnitude to that. The third arc (7,8,9,10) is really something and could stand on its own.
@alec But they still can't shoot!
@paul haha true, though in the next arc their aim gets a little better. But I mean it gets more into the fascist bureaucrats and shows how dangerous they and the Empire really are, how it _operates_ and wields power at a societal level rather than just brute force. And it shows the burgeoning rebels needing to make unsavory choices.
@paul I thought it was fantastic, but it took a couple of episodes.
@paul it’s a slow buildup but such a satisfying season once you’ve taken it all in

@paul probably getting a lot of comments like this… but Andor was done by 4 different story writers. So each three episodes are their own mini-story.

The first three episode set is the worst of the four sets. I also thought the first couple episodes were boring.

@HitokiriEric oh see I didn't even realize that, went into it totally blind.

@paul yeah. It’s not exactly all sets of 3 (before someone else slides into the mentions to correct me) but it’s close enough.

You’ll see a noticeable shift for eps 4-6. And another big shift after that.

The people raving about how amazing Andor is really really love that third arc.

@paul It was a show I watched when I didn't have other things, in the end there are some good scenes, and throughout I think the acting is good, just found the plot to be wandering and unfocused.

@paul The third episode of the other 3 episode arcs makes the rest worth it.

Please push through if only for the Mastodon content 😂

@paul I must say, as not a Star Wars Person, I really enjoyed Andor a lot. It really hooked me, at _least_ as much as The Peripheral did, though for very different reasons.
@paul episodes 8,9,10 were my favorite, but 4,5,6 were also very good.
@paul Keep going, the worst is behind you.
@paul dude unless ur throwing ur tv away anything else you watch from last year will be a waste compared to finishing andor
@paul keep going. I was similarly meh on the first 1 or 2, but by the end I do think it’s a masterful piece of storytelling.
@paul same for me. 4th seems better than the previous one and for what I read it gets better and better. Definitely a different tone and passing compared to other series or movies from the franchise.
@paul The next 3 episodes are even better. The season is in little chunks. Definitely stick it out. Such a great show!
@paul i thought it was really good around the 4th/5th episodes, then got worse. I didn’t enjoy the show that much overall. Didn’t feel very Star Warsy. I get that they were trying to do something different, but IMO the writer completely missed what makes Star Wars Star Wars. Favreau on the other hand totally gets it.
@Meat_Bucket @paul I think it's a matter of what one wants. To me, both Mandalorian and Boba Fett have more of a fanfiction feel to them, just building on canon and not really offering something new, while Andor at least tries to expand the universe.
@janne @paul I respect that they tried something new. I just didn’t enjoy it. Just because it’s different doesn’t mean it’s better. Man do feels less like fanfic than the prequels did to me. Feels like genuine Star Wars.
@Meat_Bucket @paul My favorite of the recent TV shows has probably been Kenobi. It at least managed to salvage some of the mayhem created with ep 1-3.
@janne @paul and all the Andor Coruscant scenes and plot line to me fail in a really similar way to the prequels. I don’t want to watch a series about trade federations, or space bureaucrats. Those stories aren’t compelling to me.
@paul I’m much more of a Star Trek person than Star Wars, but Andor gets very good. Enough so that we stuck with it, and are looking forward to another season.
@paul Also felt it started slow, but it gets there. The first Star Wars story where the brutality of the Empire on everyday folk is really explored.
@paul I'm not a big star wars fan myself. It's usually a bit to gimmiky but I enjoyed the Andor show. More mature, more creative, less gimmiky. Nice complexity and tension buildup. Only beginning and end felt a little long.
@paul Star Wars ended after that third movie, as far as I'm concerned. After that, it was all squeezing out every possible drop of precious bodily fluids.
@lauren @paul *cough*midichlorians*cough*
@joncruz @paul Yeah, from energy field to virus.
@lauren @paul and going from something that Obi-Wan could teach to even Han to instead being an inate born with-it-chosen one thing.
@paul I think I kind of skipped around for a bit the harsh reality of living under the Empire (and fighting it) is not exactly fun to watch.

@paul I’ve learnt that it’s ok to not love what is the talk of the town.

I’ve never seen Titanic. Didn’t care to see another Avatar. I thought that several big darling video games were boring. I don’t watch sport.

You are the only one that needs to be entertained. Spend the time wisely.

(I loved Andor, but that’s just me. I found Twin Peaks and Lost to be terrible:))

@paul it definitely gets better after the first slow episodes and I didn’t regret it at the end!
@paul the first four or so episodes were slow for me. But it does get much better from there. Stick with it.
@paul get through the prison arc; that’s where it really shines
@paul I like star wars hate most of the new stuff but really liked Andorra. But it was definitely a slow burn
@paul I liked Andor a lot! Hope it grabs you. I much prefer it to the Mandalorian
@paul it gets a lot better. it’s a slow build but then gets really, really good
@paul It just didn’t do it for me. I stuck it out until the end, but I certainly didn’t love it; barely liked it really. If you want something great though then watch Poker Face. Brilliant.
@paul For me it was never very interesting but my friends think it’s the best thing ever post that 3rd episode.

@paul anecdote, but I watched the first two, wasn’t hooked, set it aside for two whole months, randomly came back, and was like “oh is this one of those pilots that got split into four episodes? Like BSG?”

The arcs are around 3–4 episodes long and the first is slow going, but it’s worth it.

@paul I tried about three or four episodes and I really don't get what all the hype is about. It's so meh 🤷... perhaps if you are super into Star Wars but after a few episodes it feels like there is zero connection with the characters for me. They might as well be automatons.
@44 I liked the sergeant guy, but that's the only one that really struck me as interesting.
