Today on the first day of Women’s History Month I learned that after no fault divorce was finally legalized in 1970, female suicide rates dropped 20%🤯

The "strong 1950s family unit" that the GOP is nostalgic about ignores record high female suicide, suffocating domestic violence, & zero female financial autonomy.

But maybe that's GOP's goal all along?🤔

@QasimRashid According to a friend of mine who had to get a security clearance for his current job, they STILL ask questions like "Are you a member of the Communist Party?" and "Do you associate with any persons or have any friends or family who are members of the Communist Party?", and also that having a domestic violence charge on your criminal record is unlikely to disqualify you b/c it was so normalized in the 50s.

Gotta love the 1950s. They were a great decade. /s

@dragonarchitect @QasimRashid "According to a friend...Communist Party?"

When I was going through the long process of becoming a U.S. citizen they would always ask the same list of questions, one of which was, "Have you ever been a member of The Communist Party?"

Since becoming a citizen I voted for The Communist Party once, just to be a troll, but still. Whether or not you agree with The Communist Party (I don't believe in parties period) is not the point. In a supposedly free country you should be able to politic however you want.

@dragonarchitect @QasimRashid surely if they're assessing whether you're a threat to the state, the modern equivalent question should be "are you now, or have you ever been, a member of the Republican Party?"
@dragonarchitect @QasimRashid Both the US and Canada will still deny you residency and citizenship if you are affiliated with any communist group!
@dragonarchitect @QasimRashid t
They ask these questions to become a citizen

@QasimRashid

They're a party ruled by bitter cruelty and punitive "solutions."

I've grown pretty hateful of republicans over the past decade.

@QasimRashid I f you can't afford to leave, you will HAVE to put up with them. Its why all the incels are lije "I have a good job why won't any women sleep with me?"
@legalquilts @QasimRashid
That's certainly part of it, but it's not the whole thing. It doesn't help if women are forced to stay if you can't get them to come in the first place. Incels want to deny women the right to do things for themselves so they're forced into relationships with men.
@QasimRashid Making America Great *Again*. Their idea of 'greatness'.
@QasimRashid when the GOP waives the MAGA banner… I can’t help but think they want to erase progress and take major steps backwards.
@billd @QasimRashid and it is ironic that they will fly the gadsden flag right next to it when they are some of the biggest steppers right now.
@QasimRashid And nonconsensual sex within marriage was not considered rape.
@prolixian @QasimRashid a few years ago on Twitter a maga woman was arguing that you can't be raped by your husband! You really don't know what goes on behind closed doors. I was alittle worried about that woman tbh. She really believed that men were entitled to their wives bodies at all times :(
@QasimRashid It ignores more than just female suicide, unreported rapes, death by back-alley abortions, wage difference between the sexes, glass ceilings, sexual harassment,..
@QasimRashid there no fault divorce saved a lot of men's lives too tbh. I work hospice/elder care and a genuinely appalling number of women have told me about murders they did in the name of freedom

@QasimRashid

Family courts are not female friendly. At least that was my a couple friend’s experience 10-15 years ago.

The judge was so rough, humiliating & allowed my ex to do the same to me that once after the judge left the court room the court reporter stood up, slammed her books on the table and yelled, “What is going on here?”

The bailiff always offered to walk me to my car and would follow me thru the building because my ex was so threatening in court. Judge never said a word. SCARY

@QasimRashid I think the GOP would be for greater numbers of female suicide in cases of divorce
@QasimRashid Don't forget the crazy high rates of prescription drug abuse.

@QasimRashid

In the 1950's, women were often misdiagnosed as "insane" if they reported abuse & were involuntarily committed to psychiatric institutions.

Some women were diagnosed as "promiscuous" & involuntarily treated with shock therapy or lobotomies.

Psychiatrists routinely broke confidentiality to a woman's abuser.

Incest, rape, child abuse & violence were routinely ignored by police & society.

Yes, GOP billionaires will return women to these conditions to keep power in a heartbeat.

@Npars01 @QasimRashid @kcarruthers I remember my Mum saying that there was no way she would take Valium like some of her friends did to cope with their lives. It still took her 25 years to finally leave 😞

@firehorsemia @QasimRashid @kcarruthers

The practice of medicating women who live in horrific conditions continues to this day.

The FLDS, a fundamentalist Mormon cult, keeps most of its women on tranquilizers to prevent them from objecting when their sons are abandoned out of town & daughters are "married" off to men older than their grandfathers. Human trafficking is pervasive in this cult.

@Npars01 @QasimRashid @kcarruthers This is horrific. I was was referring to my Mum’s experience as a Catholic wife in the 70s.

@firehorsemia @QasimRashid @kcarruthers

All major religions treat women this way.

All major religions shield men from the consequences of their conduct.

All major religions serve as the "hatchet man" for patriarchy.

I haven't come across a major religion that doesn't act as a bulwark for the abuse of women & children.

What's worse is how certain religions like Catholics create cognitive prisons so women cannot conceive of even trying to leave. Passive acceptance to crime becomes normal

@Npars01 @QasimRashid @kcarruthers It did take my Mum decades to leave with my support. She has been psychologically damaged by it all
10 Undisclosed Facts of Joseph Kennedy

7 – He Claimed That Democracy Was Dead If you are a proud American, one of the last things you should believe is that democracy is dead. Someone forgot to mention this to Kennedy because when he was serving as ambassador in the United Kingdom, he said: “Democracy is finished in England. It may be ...

@Npars01 @QasimRashid @kcarruthers I live on the other side of the world, so not sure how Kennedy père applies to my experience 🤷🏻‍♀️

@firehorsemia @QasimRashid @kcarruthers

Joseph Kennedy was a typical man of his time.

Used his faith to hide his dark soul.
Fascist sympathizer.
Cruel.
Made wealthy through law breaking.

He's the epitome of your typical Republican or Tory billionaire donor.

@Npars01 @QasimRashid @kcarruthers Yes, okay. Thought we were discussing the state of women as housewives etc? You do realise there are women who live in other parts of the world where Kennedy is not a touchstone?

@firehorsemia @QasimRashid @kcarruthers

I was reading about Joseph Kennedy & his role as UK ambassador in WW2.

Susan Ronald has a new one coming on March 15th "Hitler's Aristocrats"

Rich men like Kennedy & Henry Ford throughout history have undermined women's rights to maintain their wealth, power, & prestige.

Modern GOP billionaire donors are emulating the 1930's fascist movements.

Trying to force women to give up their gains since the 1950's to launch a global anti-democracy movement

Sunstone Magazine
@Npars01 @QasimRashid I worked in elderly mental health and I cared for an elderly woman with dementia. One night I was tucking her in and she told me her uncle raped her and she told her dad and mum and they didn't believe her. It was like a window into how abuse was treated back then and it was so so sad. Broke my heart hearing her story so clear in her mind even 80 years later
@QasimRashid The 50's were great for some people: white males. They weren't so good for the rest of us.
@QasimRashid Why may be? It was their only goal. If they cannot enslave people of color, why no use marriage/ religion to enslave women?

@QasimRashid

They're looking for "the good old days" as defined by old-fashioned selfish racist misogynistic white men

@QasimRashid hate to tell you but that was about the time when women could get credit cards and mortgages.
No offense .
@QasimRashid Wondering if we might see a similar drop in suicides for males if they came to be divorced from their guns (?).
@QasimRashid I have always wanted to go back through the death statistics and see if the incidence of unexpected early deaths for men dropped after the legalization of divorce, too. If you can’t get out one way, you’ll try another. 🤔
@QasimRashid Black women couldn't freely vote until 1965 in the US. In Switzerland all women were denied the vote until 1971!
@QasimRashid All I will add is yes that is what the #gop want.

@QasimRashid

The GOP is happiest when women are dying. So this makes sense.

@QasimRashid Their entire platform is founded on denying reality, so its not that surprising.
@QasimRashid To them, we're all still witches.
@QasimRashid facists are antifeminists and love forcing people to obey their demands under the threat of socioeconomic destruction.

@QasimRashid

That’s their shot-term goal. Long term it’s taking us back to 1860.

@QasimRashid Interesting statistic. What is your source?
@QasimRashid @aral I’m not so sure it ignores at least two out of three of those…
@QasimRashid do a little more digging. Political figures in general. Look at the rates for GOP and the then Dems, then as a whole. Nasty, the lot of them.
