I found this taped to the door of the geography department at GWU today and it brought me so much joy. A guide to figuring out when a map was made based on features. Zoom in. It’s amazing.
@austinkocher Ohhh, I want a teatowel with this on!

Thanks for this...the printout is much easier to read!
@austinkocher having lived in Juba as a child in what is now #SouthSudan but was then #Sudan..it's the first thing I look for on a map and great to see that it gets mentioned.
@austinkocher That really is brilliant!
@austinkocher If you like that one you'll get a kick out of this one on map projections:

@MikeOhYeahThatMike @austinkocher

Yeah, I remember reading that xckd and saying "But he didn't include my favorite, the Eckert IV!".... which I suppose says something about me

@austinkocher this is pretty amazing.. thanks for sharing
@austinkocher The Redwall reference did it for me. 😍
@austinkocher Thank you. I collapsed into giggles at "about the same size as a breadbox".

@austinkocher β€ž(NUMBER OF YEMENS) + (NUMBER OF GERMANYS)=?β€œ πŸ˜‚
@austinkocher Love it! Now I just have to restrain myself from testing out how accurate it is! πŸ€ͺ
@austinkocher I particularly like the Albuquerque et seq. reference. This If brilliant. πŸ˜‚
@austinkocher I have done that with an older European City map, and was able to pin the year on Β±5 due to how certain names were spelled
@austinkocher I do love that Discworld is on there.

@austinkocher This is fascinating, and fun

@austinkocher

Randall Munroe...that's a name I'll try to remember. Brilliant stuff! He has books on Amazon. They'd make great stocking stuffers. Now, let's see his chart on types of stockings...

@austinkocher heads up @burritojustice though I bet you have this on your wall.
@austinkocher love it. Entertaining and accurate.
@austinkocher as a Coloradan, I am concerned about how we get to 2022 and beyond.
@austinkocher I always get to the "Did you make it yourself?" :)
@austinkocher This is actually a fantastic piece of scholarship. It also got me thinking how much fun it would be if someone decided to return Florida to Spain right now...

@austinkocher You will find that there's much more gloriousness from #xkcd in author Randall Munroe's other drawings, too. As a bonus, at their original location on the Web, there is always a "mouseover text" comment that is predictably wry. The one you appreciated on your geography department door lives at https://xkcd.com/1688/ .

@austinkocher This made me laugh so hard when I got to the middle and right corner πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Thanks for sharing.
@dang8r @nathanfrank14 Check this out - I laughed out loud*. *(Someone should come up with a shorthand for that.)
@austinkocher That's nice but it does have some flaws though. For example, why would a world map be dated to 1946-47 only if there are two Germanys? Those maps were in print until 1990. πŸ˜‰
