This meme has been rattling around in my head for at least a year and I only just now finally bothered to write it down

(click to expand, it has the full 5 panels)

@dsandler @peterme this is so great, this is actually how I feel about all "this X could have been a Y"

@dsandler

Well done!
Especially fun are pings about meeting to set up an agenda for another meeting before actual call with customer...

@dsandler I'm pretty sure you don't work at the same company I do, but also, at the same time, I am 100% certain we work in the same place.
@dsandler gotta print this one for my desk, or maybe as an email signature

@dsandler Exactly.

Also,
- being expected to present organized architecture ideas to be understood by all team members,
- to write good code,
- to review code with thoughtful comments,
- to provide organized reference when making review,
- to be available to answer at any time on chat, - to not be late on meetings,

Without any routine and expectations to be responsive and performing with quality.

Such a grind.

And sometimes saying the place has a good work life balance.

@renoirb @dsandler

> - to be available to answer at any time on chat

"I can't dig into that right now. Hit me up in the morning if you're still stuck."

They often aren't.

@dsandler Sixth panel: You don't read your Slack either! 😈
@dsandler This is fantastic. Really hits home with my current work.
@dsandler next panel: β€œSlack!? I don’t have time for that with all the meetings and emails!”
@bnut @dsandler yes, slack can be a real problem, often even more than e-mail. Also jira-boards with wrong descriptions and too much virtual meetings. Additionally wiki pages (Conflunce) with comments. Also biased git comments. Working and focusing at things with a little real valuable output is sometimes not possible because of that.
@dsandler This email could have been a chair-throwing meme.
@dsandler "this video could have been an image macro"
@dsandler especially the last panel rings so true: we are trying to do too much and hence rarely do much very well.
@dsandler My daily work. I am both guys, depending on what I work at.
@dsandler I am glad I have 1:1 meetings with my supervisor and folks on my team every week. If I have questions or comments I just wait until the meeting. I rarely send anyone an email or a ping and I actually think it has made me happier at work. <_<

@dsandler

Missed the "maybe I could catch up on my email if I didn't have so many meetings!"

@penryu that was the original panel 5!
@dsandler I’m using that todayπŸ˜†πŸ‘
@dsandler @atbeaune Worth it for the final pun. Should have seen it coming, but didn’t. Well played.

@dsandler Got me right in the feels.

This meme is my literal emotion when someone cold calls me about stuff that could have been an email, then talks about their personal life and general IT issues for 20mins.

I worry that one day, my smiling face will momentarily crack to reveal my inner hulk.

@dsandler that's so my life.

My PRIVATE life, that is. All the volunteer work I do is just like that.

Yes, also my *working* life is like that. But that hurts less.

@dsandler β€œI am not raising my voice, he shouted”.
@dsandler @donmelton I feel this could go on and pivot to discussing slack.
@dsandler @chucker The reason they aren’t emails is creating a good one is a lot more work than a meeting. And your alone. And your mistakes are preserved.
@dsandler I'm glad I only ever work retail jobs and never have to deal with an office environment.
@dsandler emails and meetings are just time eaters.
@dsandler The email thread you apparently missed something relevant in
@dsandler Is that last line an intensional joke on Slack messenger?
@dsandler absolutely masterful meme-making
@dsandler What if I told you I shared this post on LinkedIn ;)?
@dsandler We cut you Slack and you didn't read those either!
@dsandler "cut each other some slack", love that at the end :D
@dsandler I am *always* Tuetul Sr… must be getting old.
@dsandler
This meme could have been an email

@dsandler omg it me.

I'm a bit dreading moving back to email after working almost exclusively in workplace while at Meta. I really like the processes they have setup. I only check my email a couple of times a week

@dsandler @skinnylatte @cydharrell

this is getting saved and printed out potentially

@dsandler This is sadly a large part of my work life. Thanks for expressing it in a format I can use to laugh/cry with my colleagues about. Those people who say β€œthis meeting could have been an email”, I would love to work in such a place where everyone somehow seems to have the time to read, reply, and take action on all their emails.

@dsandler

Was "slack" a paid ad? JK. πŸ˜€

@EricLawton definitely not. I've had it pointed out to me several times since then and wish I had used a different idiom
