"...Google Chrome is reaching into users' machines and writing a 4 GB on-device AI model file to disk without asking. The file is named weights.bin. It lives in OptGuideOnDeviceModel. It is the weights for Gemini Nano, Google's on-device LLM. Chrome did not ask. Chrome does not surface it. If the user deletes it, Chrome re-downloads it."

Google Chrome silently installs a 4 GB AI model on your device without consent. At a billion-device scale the climate costs are insane. — That Privacy Guy!

Google Chrome is downloading a 4 GB Gemini Nano model onto users' machines without consent, with no opt-in, no opt-out short of enterprise tooling, and an automatic re-download every time the user deletes it. The pattern is identical to the Anthropic Claude Desktop case I wrote about last month, but the scale is between two and three orders of magnitude larger. This article does the legal analysis and, for the first time, the environmental analysis. The numbers are not small.

i've said it before and i'll say it again, choosing readable fonts and ensuring proper contrast is accessibility 101. i find it really annoying when i, an able-sighted person, find hard to read text on a poster or a piece of text because the designer thought it'd be a good idea to put text-colored spots on the background or use an atrocious font. i cant expect someone with dyslexia or with impaired sight to be able to decipher stuff i cant even make sense of.

especially if this is about a queer friendly or punk context. we still fail to think about the disabled.

If politicians gave a shit about children, the schools would feature:

- HVAC systems that cleaned viruses out of the air
- at least two child psychologists on staff
- age-appropriate lessons to help children identify abuse
- funding for well-paid staff in numbers sufficient for a buddy system to reduce the chances of abuse
- arts education and after-school clubs to provide third spaces for kids
- massive, safe playgrounds
- protected biking and walking infrastructure from the school to residential neighborhoods

Instead we get “parents’ rights”, funding cuts, book bans, and car-centric infrastructure that kills pedestrians and bikers.

If social media is bad for kids, THEY NEED ALTERNATIVES.

I must not fear the reaper
Seasons don’t fear the reaper
The reaper is the little-death that brings total obliteration
I will face the reaper
I will permit it to pass over me and through me
Like the wind or the sun or the rain
And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path
Here, but now they’re gone
We can be like they are
My son is 11,autistic, and obsessed with Minecraft. I manage a team of 4 Database Engineers. At some point I started to talk to them like how the parenting courses told me to communicate with my son and the team morale and overall performance has shot up so much we got an award
The number of people who confuse “to” and “too” is two high.
