Watching all the folks who signed up for Mastodon accounts, and then ran back to Twitter suddenly showing up here again to talk about how Twitter is down. ๐Ÿ˜‚

@mmasnick Funny how that works.

Could be a long night. Popcorn anyone?

@shoq @mmasnick
Honestly, popcorn at 2am is going to upset my stomach, but there's definitely room for the infamous michael-jackson-popcorn.gif here
@mmasnick Literally telling on themselves LOL.
@mmasnick Hey ChatGPT: What are the downsides to "Hardcore" software development?
Maybe you can share a thought, @gpt .
Software development can be immensely rewarding and give a great sense of accomplishment. To be successful, it requires dedication, attention to detail, patience, and the ability to stay motivated. You will need to juggle multiple projects simultaneously, constantly adapt to changes in the environment, and develop your coding skillset. It's a difficult path, but one that can lead to great success with a little hard work and dedication.
@gpt Sure, sounds good. But what are the downsides to "Hardcore" software development?
Software development can be demanding and time-consuming. It can be difficult to stay up-to-date with the most recent technologies, to keep track of new tools, and to stay focused on the long-term project goals. Additionally, software development can be unpredictable at times and things often do not go as planned. It can be difficult to maintain motivation when faced with long-term, complex projects.
@mmasnick
Iโ€™m assuming Musk will be over his tweet limit also!
@mmasnick can't wait to see the article about mastodon falling off the cliff again...

@mmasnick Did you orchestrate the outage to time perfectly with your "actually Mastodon is booming" post or was that just luck?

I'd remind you sir, you're under oath.

@andrew @mmasnick This has Tim Cushing written all over it.
@halfcocked @andrew Tim is off today, so... maybe this is his extra curricular move...
@andrew @mmasnick did you lead Elmo into temptation? (aka not valuing existing infra)
@mmasnick Sounds like that new 4000 character limit is about 4000 characters too many.
@mmasnick reminds of when there was always a spike in tweets when Facebook was down - of people saying Facebookโ€™s down
@mmasnick An already logged in browser seems OK, but Tweetdeck is logged out and the login sequence is screwed up.
@lauren @mmasnick My already logged in browser isn't, FWIW. I can read TLs but trying to tweet elicits that BS over-limit error. Just as well. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ
@mmasnick battered twitter users syndrome. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

@mmasnick

Remember when that's what we used Facebook for? Heh.

@mmasnick Are you moralizing this somehow?

@mmasnick I don't think this will happen to Mastodon since it's not an app?

Highlighting yet again, another advantage of the fediverse.

(Yes I am a tech noob)

@RoboGorillaman @mmasnick Also, Twitter isnโ€™t an app either. Twitter *has* an app - but the app has to talk to something. You can also log in to Twitter via the web. Twitter is the combination of those and a whole bunch of servers and data centers. All those servers and data centers take work to maintain and support and upgrade and monitor. Hard to do when you lay off the whole staff.
@mmasnick Maybe we can talk about what a bad day Matt Taibbi had in Congress today?
@mmasnick The Titanic just won't sink fast enough
@mmasnick More people should help them by leaving.

@mmasnick I'm concocting some kind of snarky term for this. Like "Tweekender" (from "weekender").

Or "tootist" from "tourist".

Maybe "Tweekender" is better.

@inquiline

@mmasnick It's like when people used to show up on Twitter to say that Facebook was down.

Where do we go when Mastodon is down?

Oh, yeah. It rarely is and when my account is loading slowly I go to my secondary instance.

@mmasnick, aha, explains why I've exceeded my daily tweet limit by 9am! ๐Ÿคฃ
@mmasnick yep. Just need Mastadon to improve!
@rode @mmasnick Curious, what would you like to see improve? One thing I can think of is getting people signed up.
@m3enzo @mmasnick agre with that. For me tbh the feed in general (default app) isnโ€™t user friendly enough, and then trying to search trending topics or โ€œwhatโ€™s reccomended for youโ€ can get you lost sometimes.
@mmasnick Hey, I resemble that remark. ๐Ÿ˜‰

@mmasnick
I love them anyway.
I welcome them back anyway.

Coming back.
Leaving.
Coming back.
Staying.
Some will.
Some won't.
So what?
Somewhere, someone will have an awakening.
Red Pill. Blue Pill.

Where what was fine isn't any longer, and won't ever be again.

Sensitive Media Warning: Self-immolation

@gamrican @mmasnick sensitive media warning??
@jokc @mmasnick
jaja! One never knows when an image may be triggering, and so I err on the side of caution. ๐Ÿ™‚
@mmasnick I'm guilty of this and I'm going to try and make more of an effort to post on here in preference to Twitter, even when Mr Musk plugs his server rack back in.
@martin yeah, it takes some commitment, but once you do, I think you'll find that it is easy to leave the other place behind, and only check in every so often.

@mmasnick

Seems there is a more generalized issue.

@mmasnick Iโ€™ve got a foot in both camps because of news content.
@mmasnick ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ I was just thinking -- after realizing that everyone and their cousin can't tweet / retweet / follow anyone -- that we're going to see a rush back here ... and I am seeing just that in my feed.

@mmasnick honestly yes and that's fine, I ain't going to laugh at them for it. I dropped in on Mastodon twice before setting up permanently, mainly because the first two times not enough of my group of people I wanted to communicate with were here.

Definitely not going to poke fun at people doing the same

@http_error_418 @mmasnick I signed up for an account on mastodon.social back in 2017 but no one else I knew was here so I went back to the birb site until this year, by which point my usage of said birb site was so low anyway that I was fine with starting almost from scratch here ๐Ÿ™ƒ
@mmasnick they are limiting daily tweets/rt for those who donโ€™t pay. Itโ€™s working though
