this kind of smart, walkable, mixed-use urbanism Is illegal to build in many american cities
@chasnah idea for an AI generated image: design a computer circuit modeled after American suburbs, with big empty areas and low density chip spaces.
@yuki2501 @chasnah Big parallel busses look like multi lane roads, after all.
@yuki2501 @chasnah That might be enough psychic damage to actually kill me. Thanks for the nightmares.
@chasnah however stupid laws can fe changed
@chasnah
(alt text, please?)
@sabik @chasnah A circuit board covered in DIP components resembling apartment buildings and large THT capacitors resembling trees.
@sabik @chasnah Close-up photo of a circuit board with many neatly grouped clusters of integrated circuit chips that could be imagined as buildings in neighborhoods, dotted with comparatively large, round, green capacitors that might resemble trees.
@chasnah Beautiful use of green space! 😍😏
@chasnah
You will rarely find an American community with a bus system as effective as this
@chasnah Does it face a lot of... resistance?
@inspired @chasnah came here to say this, was going with resistors, tho. 😀
At least the UN has a few capacity-building programs
@chasnah I gotta say I was not expecting the circuit board! :3
@chasnah A circuit board with rows and rows of DIP packages. One section of them has several green disc capacitors between each row, looking like round puffy trees.
@chasnah because too many killer hurts!
@chasnah haha. I like the green ceramic caps as trees. If you use grey ones at the end of each chip they look like head stones in a graveyard.
@chasnah That’s the problem with NIMPCBs.
@chasnah I see temporary housing for 32768 residents.
@chasnah The trees are purdy. But I think this picture is fake, look at how the cars are all lined up perfectly. And the pixels look weird.

@chasnah
@timbray

SMT has led to such suburban sprawl

@ian @chasnah @timbray oh, look, it's Mini Motorways.
@chasnah Those tantalums are a fire hazard in the neighborhood!
@chasnah this must be this "green IT" thing 😂

@chasnah
I like the way they've lined most streets with mature trees. And cudos for hitting the density sweet spot with 4-5 story "commie-block" housing units. Single family dwellings don't provide a sustainable tax base and nobody loves a sky scraper.

@notjustbikes, thoughts?

@chasnah There's too much magic in those units to be safely occupied. If you get a power surge, having fuses blow is fine, but having your office or home fill with magic smoke is no good.

@chasnah

Me, examining the photo close up: "Wait, those trees are capacitors... oh! This is a real circuit board, not an art project made from one?"

@chasnah incredible how much green space we fit in back in those days
@chasnah you can get almost anywhere by bus
@ntakayama @chasnah in a lot of designs, if you can't get *everywhere* by bus, something's broken.
@chasnah It's nice to see a nice and connected neighborhood where you don't need to use a bus to get anywhere for once
@chasnah IC that there are some traces of resistance here and there, but there are plenty of nice joints across the board.
@chasnah I’ve been to Battery Park, but Capacitor Park looks nicer.
@chasnah Nothing smart about button caps.
@chasnah Unfortunately, the chips are very expensive and there's no place to park your data.
@chasnah
that would lead to induced demand and can be a very polarizing topic.

@chasnah No cap?

...I'll see myself out.

@chasnah

That stroad tho...I feel bad for someone trying to get from the ROM to the RAM on the other side.

@chasnah Is that near Silicon Valley?

@chasnah It's all about building...capacity.

Okay I can see there's some resistance to the idea.

@chasnah it would destroy the natural mechanosphere (parking lot) of the endangered species of automobilia .
@chasnah With those 16k x 1 RAM chips separated by green capacitor trees it's fairly low density, but lowish density works quite well with proper cycling infrastructure. Dutch towns are not particularly dense and have room for trees. Their high cycling modal shares results from civilized conditions for cycling more than it does from high density.

A view from the cycle path

Why is it that people cycle more in the Netherlands than in any other country ? The answer is in the infrastructure. Long established blog with content up to the present day detailing how the infrastructure of the Netherlands makes cycling so pleasant that almost everyone cycles in this country and a higher proportion of cycle journeys are made here than anywhere else

@chasnah Smart green noise pollution measures.
@chasnah Björk in the 80’s: “Look at this…it looks like a seetie. Like a little model of a seetie.”
Be sure to attend your city board meetings!

@chasnah All aboard the memory bus! Just like the old days.
@chasnah walking in the Tron neighborhood was easy and very sterile.
@chasnah this pic gives me totes ptsd; spent 40 years as an electromechanical assembler. I could build this in my sleep. Even worked on the Space Station. That is, crap I built is now on the Space station but saying I worked on it sounds way cooler. Had my best job ever, in 2020, just got promoted had my first ever retirement fund growing, loved my team and what we were building....until #covid took a sledgehammer to my life. bye bye! this new age sucks.
@chasnah and only the Netherlands and Taiwan have the infra to build it :)
