There is no labor shortage for jobs that pay workers fairly. Isnโ€™t it funny how that works?
@rbreich i dont think these numbers reflect what it takes to get one of those jobs, however
@rbreich
My son works for a well known fork-lift co. At a quarterly mtng, they were told every dept beat projected profits substantially.
They raised the labor rate they charge to $178/hr. They also announced there are no planned adjustments to compensation or benefits in response to inflation or cost of living increases because of the current climate and uncertain future. Needless to say, they are hiring because every dept is short handed. I am so angry because this is now normal. ๐Ÿ˜ก

@rbreich Weeeelll. Computer Scientists/Programmers?

But yeah, people are there, hire the people who do apply and maybe don't fit 100%, rather than waiting for the perfect candidate to appear out of thin air.

@rbreich I don't think that's true at all, and agree with you on most things. You keep posting this type of comment, but there are severe shortages in very well-paying jobs such as construction, health care, social services, administration, tech, etc.

@Minnesnowta @rbreich

No matter what job profile you need, pay 10 million dollars a month, and you will find it.

Most of those shortages are caused by paying workers half (or less) of what they should be paid. Clients don't want to pay enough to pay such salaries? Sooner or later, they will, if they really need the work done.

@jgg @rbreich They're working somewhere, aren't they? Do you think workers from the industries I listed left to go bag groceries for $11 an hour?

@Minnesnowta @rbreich

If there is not enough trained people, they will come from abroad. Even if there are not enough people abroad (or your government manages to not let them come), people will retrain, so the shortage never will last more than the time needed to retrain, 8 years at most.

@jgg @rbreich You're all over the place, and have absolutely no idea of what you're talking about.
@Minnesnowta @rbreich Because those industries currently treat their workers like trash. Every ex-construction worker I know would do anything to keep from going back. Health care has been a dumpster fire since COVID. Social workers are actually paid little more than minimum wage and put on very traumatic front lines. Admin is soul sucking work. Can't speak for tech but I know that most web tech is very hit or miss.
@lannan @rbreich Most of what you say isn't true at all with the exception of the health care dumpster fire. But there was a shortage long before Covid. Shortages in rural locales especially that would be great places for health care workers. But I'm not a purist or extremist who speaks in hyperbole. Not going to argue with you.
@rbreich they define laborer shortages as a shortage of desperate people will will take any job
@rbreich
Belatedly watching the series Poldark. Resounds eerily. Only difference : no chips or plastic.
@rbreich How dare the market work. Thereโ€™s should be higher wages in less essential positions to encourage people NOT to seek better careers.
@rbreich @Lowie there are jobs that pay workers fairly?!?
@rbreich
My job pays pretty well & good benefits. We've been short handed for almost 3 years. All departments & shifts.
@rbreich we are a small company but we stay small on purpose. We want the best people. We are growing faster than we ever have right now.
@rbreich Well, honestly , my profession (software engineer) pays pretty fairly and there is still a shortage. But mostly true.
@rbreich One of my most oft-repeated takes on Twitter: businesses love to talk about paying โ€œmarket wages,โ€ but any that actually did wouldnโ€™t also be shothanded for long.
@rbreich plus we need immigrants to learn skills like nursing ect
