Getting rid of SMS 2FA verification would make sense. Only allowing paid users to use it just kind of seems punitive. And like everything else it’s the firing from the hip with no real warning to anyone that is the worst part.

In the grand scheme of ways Elon has messed up twitter though it’s a pretty small one.

“THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A FUCKING EMAIL, TRENT.”

From the "that explains a lot" department.....Web hosting giant GoDaddy says it suffered a breach where unknown attackers have stolen source code and installed malware on its servers after breaching its cPanel shared hosting environment in a multi-year attack.

While GoDaddy discovered the security breach following customer reports in early December 2022 that their sites were being used to redirect to random domains, the attackers had access to the company's network for multiple years.

"Based on our investigation, we believe these incidents are part of a multi-year campaign by a sophisticated threat actor group that, among other things, installed malware on our systems and obtained pieces of code related to some services within GoDaddy," the hosting firm said in an SEC filing.

Little reminder for the neat freaks: if you move the Spotlight window in macOS and get anxious every time you subsequently trigger it that it’s not dead centre any more, click-and-hold the icon in the menu bar. (I have that hidden as I always use ⌘+Space, but I show then rehide for this. 🤓)

ETA: @kristofferjohansson (and others) tell me you can also drag the Spotlight window and it will snap to the centre, which I didn’t know!

I'm pretty sure Mastodon is the first social network I've been on that didn't immediately ask me to betray all of the people in my address book.

Here's the chart that really matters.

Average Mastodon posts per month are going up.

Here's a comparison:

* Sept 2022: ~460M posts
* Dec 2022: ~573M posts
* Feb 2023 (so far): ~678M posts

This is a dramatic upswing in posts, and indicates that activity on Mastodon is continuing to increase.

The chart tells the story. The jump is dramatic.

Good for him for checking himself in and for being open. Openness on this saves lives. Silence and shame kill.

Why do so many hard-fought gains appear to be losing ground? It’s because they were successful in fighting entrenched, typically regressive or oligarchic interests. When they’re *winning* they have no need to fight back: the prisoners enforce the rules of the jail. It’s when society appears ready to accept trans people, marriage equality, a return of worker rights—the revanchists fight the hardest. They have already lost the battle of hearts and minds.

Remember: Mega-corporations wouldn’t be deploying massive union-busting campaigns if they weren’t terrified of worker power.

It looks like the NYT has issued an internal statement that they will not "tolerate" staff complaints about their anti-trans coverage—which they insist is just fine.

(Letter sourcing: https://twitter.com/maxwelltani/status/1626324277422133253)

The NYT falsely claims that GLAAD, which also protested their coverage, delivered the letter from Times writers—and that those writers are therefore supporting GLAAD's advocacy.
