Yesterday, Elon Musk called former Twitter developer Ian Brown a "jackass" after Ian questioned his plans for a complete Twitter re-write.

The whole conversation was bonkers.

Attached video has the context.

@atomicpoet these two minutes of pure gold *almost* make the past two months worth it.
@atomicpoet
might want to update the alt-text for the video too. 😉
@cranky_david Unfortunately, Mastodon doesn't let me edit alt text for video.
@atomicpoet
ouch. context from your text should help.

@atomicpoet This was so cringe, but telling.

Hotz was a coward for kicking Ian out... presumably, in a bid to "save" Musk the embarrassment.

And much like Musk, Hotz does not know what he is talking about either.

@adamjcook @atomicpoet Musk and sycophants are all white-knuckling their way through reality

@atomicpoet

My jaw is on the ground.

If I was trying to write a parody of how out of it and bad at leadership this guy was and if *this* is what I wrote, people would say "ease up... it's not believable"

@futurebird @atomicpoet yes, fiction editor can’t pass this ignorant dialogue.
@futurebird @atomicpoet I followed your comment and this is the first time I hear Elon talk and he sounds like a textbook bumbling idiot.
@futurebird @atomicpoet yep, since about 2015/2016 I’ve been saying if you went back in time 5 years and released a “fictional” story of our present reality, you’d be universally panned as a complete hack of a writer.

@noonedanger @futurebird @atomicpoet

So true. No one would think the social construct was in any way credible!

@noonedanger @futurebird @atomicpoet when I was young, I read huge amounts of fiction (mostly SFF, but plenty of other stuff too). But the older I get, the harder it gets, because fiction makes so much more sense than the real world, that it's too difficult to muster enough suspension of disbelief to keep going.
@noonedanger @futurebird @atomicpoet
- Ok, worldwide pandemic, that’s good…
- Half the population of earth don’t believe it’s happening? Edit that out, obviously that can’t happen
@atomicpoet @davidgarywood “who are you?” is such an interesting response to being asked a real question
@jacqueline @atomicpoet @davidgarywood I took it as "Who are you? So I can fire you if you currently work for me."

@rubberbullets @atomicpoet @davidgarywood it could also be “who are you? what are your credentials to question me?” or “who are you? are you being paid? what’s your agenda?”

there’s so many interpretations, and they’re all fascinating

@jacqueline @atomicpoet @davidgarywood that's true, he does seem to be paranoid of agendas against him.
@jacqueline @atomicpoet @davidgarywood Musk was subconsciously queuing up the ad hominem attacks
@atomicpoet

Host: Ian could you stay civil, see what you made him do?
@atomicpoet My mind tried to come up with a decent reason why he wouldn't give a straight answer. I was for a sec like "maybe he doesn't want to disclose such details in a public space. Maybe he doesn't want to tell him because he's a *former* Twitter dev", and would say that those (mainly the former tho) are okay reasons, BUT JUST SAY THAT THEN. Since he didn't, you really only conclude that he doesn't know. But if he doesn't know, who told him that "it's a mess"...? 🤔
@atomicpoet I look forward to the Netflix documentary
@phoccer @atomicpoet OMG YES THAT'S PROBABLY ONE OF THE FEW NETFLIX DOCS I'D ACTUALLY WATCH!

@atomicpoet Yet again Musk is showing how weak he is in the space. He's got a plan to "rewrite" something that he's not even able to articulate clearly what it is, or what he means.

He was given a good opportunity, when he was asked (I thought clearly) if he was talking reform or revolution. His response "the crazy stack" is vague and very hand wavy (the sort of thing I hear from Jrs a LOT)

If Musk persists, he's effectively shutting down new features until a replacement "stack" is implemented - which is hardly going to increase "velocity" (The truth is, Musk fired all the knowledge, and nobody is left that understands what the stack is)

@SaturniusMons @atomicpoet But that's it, he IS a junior dev, and apparently not a very good one at that. He's not a good manager either. I'm not sure how he got this far in life.
@atomicpoet wow Musk is really clueless, what a douchebag.
@oldmanmike @atomicpoet his brain has some kind of misfiring happening.. I think he needs to go on a permanent leave…or like I said about unplugging Truss..can we unplugg him?🙄
@kcsorenby @atomicpoet stock value of TSLA may do the unplugging for us
@oldmanmike @atomicpoet 😂😂yep done and done☺️👍

@atomicpoet Oh wow. That is utterly amazing, thanks for posting. The whole facade is crumbling away so fast.

I feel so embarrassed that I didn't see through it all sooner. I should've at least realized when he smashed the windows of the Cybertruck on stage.

@atomicpoet Looks like he's on another one right now. Someone should pop in.
@atomicpoet the more I listen to Elon the more I’m convinced that he’s a 3rd year CS grad trapped in a billionaire’s body.
@atomicpoet Sounds like the guy who called someone a jackass didn't get removed for incivility.
@atomicpoet The transformation is almost complete. The NFT trading cards are not far behind.
@atomicpoet where can I listen to the whole thing? Seems very interesting !

@atomicpoet I watched this live

They do discuss the mess of databases and such after

But Musk is talking out of his ass through most of it

@jpgrosen @sbglasius @tbsalling
check lige ovenstående. 🤦🏻‍♂️
@randahl @sbglasius @tbsalling he he der er helt fantastisk.. your answer to improved effiency is a full rewrite?
@jpgrosen @randahl @tbsalling ja, jeg kender mange systemer der trænger til et rewrite, men hvis det kniber med økonomien, så virker det ikke som det hurtige fix 🤔
@atomicpoet Watch that "velocity" soar while they drastically underestimate the effort needed to do a big rewrite from scratch, launch a replacement with major feature gaps to the original and (badly) support and maintain the "legacy" system in parallel. 🤦‍♂️
@atomicpoet I can't be the first person to equate "what do you mean by re-write?" to "African or European swallow?"
@atomicpoet Only a non-engineer would think “What does the stack look like, from bottom to top” is an insult. 🤣 It’s clear Elon Musk is not a coder and knows nothing about software engineering.
@gazpacho @atomicpoet Those who read his history knows he was never any good at anything, all of his code from the days at Zip2 had to be re-written.
@atomicpoet "When backed into a corner, he begins namecalling"
@atomicpoet This makes me feel so elated that I don’t work there and I don’t have to deal with people like that in my life. What an absolute waste of life energy that would be.
@atomicpoet What a colossal idiot. Call for a complete re-write anywhere. Any company. See what happens. Best case scenario, someone who knows something will poke you in the eye and make you justify your assertion. Worst case, they run you out of town on a rail. Elon got lucky.
@atomicpoet leaving aside the whole idea of "we need a rewrite to go fast" (cause that always works 🙄) if you're going to make the assertion that what is being done is so wild no other company would ever contemplate it, you better be able to back that up.
@atomicpoet this has convinced me that he:
1. Is unable to understand the stack. Wont explain it because 'no one would understand'.
2. Has fired everyone that can explain it validate it, has experience with it, is able to now manage it.
3. Wants sympathy (eg. Oh Elon tried but what he was given was just so broken and unrepairable to work with. Poor genius Elon.)
4. Feigning brave (eg. Oh Elon is so brave & bold to know when to rewrite. Praise Elon the saviour of Twitter.).
5. Sucks.
@atomicpoet this was worth listening to just to hear Musk get called "buddy" like a bad puppy you know is about to crap on the floor
@atomicpoet I’m just assuming that #Musk wants to rewrite the #Twitter codebase because he accidentally fired all the #Scala programmers.

@atomicpoet It's so weird for someone to buy a tech firm when they want to throw away the tech stack, fire most of the employees, chase away the advertisers, and regularly insult the most valuable content creators.

What's the asset he paid for, then? The servers and the furniture?

@aneela He sold the furniture.

@atomicpoet Just...astronomical moronity.

He overpaid already, then turned it into a dumpster fire.

Now he's got a money hose going from Tesla into Twitter to join the dumpster fire.

@aneela @atomicpoet he paid for the userbase and the reputation. He is trying to destroy both, succeeding in destroying the latter
@atomicpoet It's like he makes these grand declarations only after asking ChatGPT what he should do. So very confidently clueless.

@atomicpoet

HFS. This is the conversation that happens every time a first year product manager comes in to a room full of straight up apex developers and tries to flex.

🤣🤣🤣
