All jokes aside, remember what Christmas is really about, people.

Rich people being terrorized by spectres until they agree to pay their employees a living wage.

@scrumble_eggs
Or alternatively, as T. Minchin says:

The Westerization of
A dead Palistenian
Press-ganged into selling
PlayStations and beer

@scrumble_eggs Uh, no. Yule is about hanging dead horses from a holy ash tree, and eating lots of pork and herring.
@leifnixon @scrumble_eggs don't forget the feast of sol invictus, all hail the sun!
@scrumble_eggs the birth of a man (supposedly) who said rich people don't go to heaven, and chased money lenders out of a church by whipping them?
@scrumble_eggs It's about celebrating that the sun is coming back. Quite why we have the piss-up four days late I've not yet managed to find out.
@TimWardCam @scrumble_eggs
And then we wait ANOTHER week to actually celebrate the "new" year.

@scrumble_eggs from 500ad (possibly longer) until the establishment of the commonwealth Christmas was about poor people demanding food, drink, and money from the rich with threats of violence. Often while cross dressing or dressed as animals
Time to bring back tradional Christmas?
@scrumble_eggs In my head I'm Scrooge, but in reality I'm just a Cratchit.

This video is very informative about the origins of Christmas and how it became such a capitalist and consumerist holiday and also quite inspiring on how we can try to celebrate it going forward in a better way.
Why We Need a War on Christmas

@julia_ @scrumble_eggs I think it’s different in countries like mine that don’t have thanksgiving right before Xmas. In Australia Xmas isn’t a “nuclear family” deal so much as extended family getting together and eating a lot (& then getting together with the other side of the family and doing it again. Repeat as necessary). As well as way too many gifts, but I feel like that’s gradually changing. A lot of families now do a Kris Kringle thing instead.
@Kath67 @scrumble_eggs I guess I wish everyone cared less about buying copious amounts of expensive things they see on sale. There is so much waste when people get things they don't need or want. I wish people made gifts more often than buying them. It should be more personal all less about how much you can spend. Also would be nice if majority of people took the holidays as times to give to those in need in their community.
@scrumble_eggs I thought it was about a fat man blocking people’s chimneys in an effort to encourage rampant consumerism? #christmas
@scrumble_eggs Wait, I thought it was about German radicals stealing bearer bonds!
@scrumble_eggs Google John Elwes (the real life inspiration for Scrooge) and check out the Wikipedia link. Especially the section under “Miserliness.” It’s a real eye opener!
@scrumble_eggs Have you heard the one where #RonaldReagan narrated 'A Christmas Carol'? 'A hard working middle class voting #republican was visited by three Marxist Ghosts who terrorized him to give away his wealth to welfare ingrates.'
@scrumble_eggs we need more of that these days.
@scrumble_eggs we need more Spectres in this world. I volunteer.
@scrumble_eggs need Musk to be terrorized by 400 singing muppets every time he goes outside
@scrumble_eggs That happens to be my favourite story of all time. Also, it's not about living wages; it's about becoming kind and generous with those who have less than you.
@scrumble_eggs @mloxton i think you'd appreciate this sentiment
@scrumble_eggs Apparently you've been reading the book of Charles, published c. 1850?
@scrumble_eggs A spectre is haunting Ebenezer - the spectre of Communism.
@scrumble_eggs how do have a red tick ?
@advait11 : verified_red : without the spaces between the colons.
@scrumble_eggs I'm looking forward to hearing all your best grievances against the #Capital this coming #Festivus.
@scrumble_eggs Spector of communism, am I right!? :)
@scrumble_eggs I was just watching A Muppets Christmas Carol this morning and thinking the same thing.
@scrumble_eggs something something Jesus and the money-changers mumble mumble
