Just arrived in San Diego and I’m wondering — what is this city’s most iconic moment??

To me it’s when all their fireworks went off at the same time but I’m open to other suggestions

@caseynewton TOP GUN (1986)
@mtsw @caseynewton when that Navy boat caught on fire
@ilovecomputers @caseynewton the time the guy stole the tank is def the most iconic military mishap in the city's history
@mtsw @caseynewton yeah, but that one got overshowded by the Killdozer
@caseynewton It's cameo in Anchorman
@caseynewton No city has had a more iconic moment, with the possible exception of the river catching on fire in Cleveland
@caseynewton welcome to town! pinge if you want intel on where to taco or where to sushi! I think in 2007 when the whole city caught fire and many of us got evacuated was a pretty big deal. there was also the whole kony 2012 ordeal.

@Viss @caseynewton

Don't forget the biggest power outage in CA history. September HEATWAVE 2011.
I left town for that...

@wren @caseynewton there was that 18 hours in 2009 when the whole county lost power and it almost went mad max :D

@Viss @caseynewton

I wonder if I am blurring the two in my memory? All I really remember was it was unbearably hot.

@Viss @caseynewton

kony 2012 ordeal, yes.
Should I not mention Heaven's Gate in 1997? Too late.

@wren @caseynewton if i was smart, i woulda bought that house at the bottom lf the market. i didnt know at the time what 'having a house in rsf' meant

@Viss @caseynewton

if I'd known, I'd thrown in with you-lol

@Viss @caseynewton

Just looked it up. Hale-Bopp will be back in 4385. If we start saving now, maybe we can snatch up the next one. 💰 🤑

@Viss where should I taco??
@caseynewton the best, by far and away, adobada ive found in town is at 'tj tacos' in escondido. where about town are you? i may be able to give you a spot closer
@Viss @caseynewton if you are going to Escondido try Birrieria Ay Jalisco.
@Viss @caseynewton closer to downtown I like Kikos Seafood Lunch Truck.
@EricFrohnhoefer i actually will be going there! Thanks Eric

@caseynewton @Viss

@Viss @caseynewton

Taste of Himalaya in Hillcrest also good. University Ave. It’s closer assuming you're in the city.

Sundara guys have a cool story. If they’re not too busy, they’ll tell you about it. I like the vibe.

@caseynewton For me, as a native who grew up there in the 80s, it's when Pete Wilson came out at a Padres game to throw the first pitch, and just about everyone in the stadium booed the former mayor.
@caseynewton Tony Gwynn. That’s the moment
@caseynewton I’ve never lived there, but I think about this maybe once a week
@johnlago @caseynewton what about when guy fieri put pastrami on a hamburger at ocean beach?

@caseynewton

iconic, yes, that's the word.
I was in America Plaza. It was frightening for a bit until I figured out what it was, even then, still. The echos off the buildings in the Downtown Core. Yeah, it was a little scary.

@caseynewton as a person who lives on the East Coast and has never set foot in San Diego, the fireworks mishap is the only thing I know about the city.

@joannalaine @caseynewton

Yeah, that was bizarre. 😀

@caseynewton When the guy stole a tank from the base and drove it around town and no one could stop him.
@caseynewton You’re in San Diego? I hope you enjoy your time here! Yeah, the fireworks moment absolutely something. There was also the time that person stole a tank, and drove it through the city.
@caseynewton when sally field walks in on robin williams throwing a birthday party for their kid and says "you brought the entire goddamn san diego zoo" and then divorces him, in mrs doubtfire
@burr86 only 90s kids will remember
@caseynewton I cannot hear the name San Diego and not think of Anchorman — which I am guessing is a good thing
@caseynewton Not a specific one off incident - it's a yearly event. It's Comic Con.
@caseynewton the under water park is awesome

@caseynewton the time when someone hijacked a tank and went on a joyride around San Diego?
